I recall watching Steve Christie kick a 59 yarder back in '93 and that had minimally 5, maybe 10 more yards on it, so I had been waiting for someone to break the record ever since. And part of the problem is that kickers don't get a chance to kick long ones that often, because most coaches will opt to throw hail mary once it's past 60 yards.
As impressive and magical as that was, I have a hard time believing it will stand forever. Justin Tucker has hit 70-yarders in practice. @@bucketzgaming_706 The "right situation" happens ALL THE DAMN TIME. You just have to have a kicker with a helluva leg. We routinely see kicks longer than this in non-game situations, so the odds of it standing, even for several years, is pretty low. Top athletes don't get worse over time.
As a Lions fan, this has got to be the most painful loss other than the "Fail Mary" (starring Aaron Rodgers). However, I must give a hand to Justin Tucker. That was one hell of a kick considering the circumstances. The same man who kicked a game winning 61 yard field goal back when the Lions were relevant in 2013.
Nah. Hell no. The process no-catch and the picked up pass interference flag in the playoffs were MUCH more devastating. This team isn't gonna win more than 2 games anyways so who gives a shit about this damn kick?

Many of the experts also predicted that Tom Dempsey’s 63- yard field goal that beat, yes the Lions 19-17, would be never be broken. Kickers and players in general will always be getting stronger and better, so although this record may stand for many years, eventually someone else will break it.
That kick is still worthy of mention for a few other reasons. This was in the era when kickers still led with the toe, offering less control over accuracy, and Dempsey in specific had a club foot on his kicking leg. Add to this the fact that this happened below sea level in New Orleans. Yes, his record has been broken, but the man was just so far ahead of his time.
Exactly. I agree that there's a limit to human performance in making the longest FG, however there's definitely scenarios where someone could hit from further. Playing in Denver is the obvious one, but a ridiculously strong tailwind would be another.
@@danr9659 And don't forget fair catch free kicks, where a kicker gets a full running start as opposed to regular field goal attempts. Using those, 70+ yarders *should* be easily achievable.

The Holy Scriptures say otherwise on curses. Moreover, the Lions just need competent leadership and players, just like any other team. After all, if it is happening with the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals, then certainly the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, and Washington Redskins (and it will be the Redskins or there will be no NFL anymore, let alone any sports on any level worldwide) can have it happen to them as well.
This will definitely be broken. Ignore the fact that kickers regularly hit longer field goals in practice, the probability doesn’t matter because the sample set has no end date so you afford the NFL billions of chances to kick field goals, they have plenty of time to reel in the probability. New shoes could change physical limits (like what Nike air max did to racing records) a freak kicker with weird genetics and double jointedness in his knees (like what Michael Phelps did to swimming records) could all come along and redefine physical limitations. Add the possibility of freakish wind like the video dismissed, the odds that true perfection was reached and not a yard more could be juiced is far less probable
Correct. Tucker has made a 70 yard field goal in warm ups at Denver. This is why math and science don't really belong in sports. They do have a place I suppose but they need to stay there
The curious thing is he saying that science said blah blah...kole. Has this guy ever studied genetics in science class in his office? I dont think so...
@@markipleur science says if he can do this with zero wind then with a 5-10 mph wind at his back he could get well over 70 yards using the exact same trajectory.
@@markipleur Even though this was in practice 10 years ago, back whenever Sebastian Janikowski tied the long time record of 63 yards on a Monday Night Football game in Denver, he did make 70 yarders in practice. Granted it was practice but still, that alone I think shows 70 yards is probably the max limit that any kicker could reach.
I remember long ago hearing that Martin Gramatica made a 73 yard field goal in practice when he was a senior at Kansas State. This record will eventually will be broken, but it could take many years indeed, perhaps even decades.
ding ding ding! also, I dunno why, but it always annoys me when they talk about helium filled balls. It's been shown a billion times that wouldn't increase distance. Even mythbusters did an episode on it
A 70 yard kick isn’t impossible. Hell, there are videos of guys hitting from 85 in practice. The true problem lies in launch angle. A lower angle allows a kick to go further, but too low of an angle will send the ball careening into a lineman. Given enough time and the right conditions, a 70 yard field goal in game will happen. I’d bet before 2030.
It's not about if a kicker can make it from that far, it's about the coaches taking the risk to allow the opportunity. If the kicker misses then the other team gets the balls at their opponents 40 yard line.
Well many records that have been deemed “unbreakable” even with scientific and anatomical proof have been broken. Prater’s 64 yd record was supposed to be unbreakable. Also, the 68 yd field goal likely would have gone in if it hadn’t been kicked in a humid, sea level stadium. It was recovered by the Jaguars player at 9 yards deep, so it was short a couple yards. Which could be made up for kicking at a stadium located in a place with thinner air. That alone goes to show that the record will likely be broken. Let’s also state that scientists 70 years ago did studies saying that running a 4 minute mile was impossible, unbreakable by humans. Until Robert Bannister broke the 4 minute threshold by half a second, a 3:59.6 mile. Now the world record is 3:43.15. That difference in mile running times is staggering. A once impossible time has been bested by nearly 17 seconds. A world record is only “unbreakable” until someone breaks it 🤷♂️
@@Wallyworld30 also pat mcafee kicked a 64 yarder which wasn’t accurate enough but had the distance to hit a field goal farther than 66 yard with a bounce of the crossbar so really it is only the accuracy that is stopping people from breaking the record
Thing of it is, again the physical part of this is what makes it impossible because kickers including Tucker for the fact injury becomes a big factor after 60+ yards. The more you exert your extremities the higher the probably of injury. That's why for example a 110 mph fastball won't happen. Now can there be a FG higher than 66 yards and make it? It's possible but a ton of luck rather than physical ability probably will happen. Because Tucker more than likely mustered everything in this kick, in the perfect environment in a domed stadium where no wind and any elements affecting the kick. The people that say Mile High stadiums is the perfect scenario, again that's not a perfect environment either, even with thinner air, problem with it is winds are a major factor even with thinner air, also add the fact that Denver is a mile up, winds once the ball is in flight are magnified because winds are already different being in Denver but even having the ball go 10 or 20 feet up winds at this height and at that elevation are elevated so it's not the perfect scenario. You also have to remember also for people that state history prior, technology and science back then was more limited than it is today. Today's science and physical limitations will make this FG impossible to break unless a better specimen with their feet can make this.
What's really amazing is the old record before prater was against the lions then prater came to the lions and now tucker hit the new one against the lions. We've literally been involved with the last 3 record holders in some way
I think it has a good chance to be broken in Denver by Tucker if it happens in the next 3 or so years while his leg is still young and strong. For anyone that may not know, Denver has a much thinner atmosphere because it's so far from ocean level.
Little fact Albq NM is 250' higher than Den Col. And Sandia peak is just under 2 miles above sea level. So mile high not so special. He should come over here and try it.
"Let's look at the probabilities of why this record won't be broken..." "The probabilities of *why*..." doesn't mean anything, and demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of what probability is. "Forever" is a much longer time than you think it is; and the probability that this particular record will be broken--especially given the recent trend in the sport--is actually quite high.
6:42 - The science section is literally just 'well, there's a limit in pitching due to ligaments so there's a limit in kicking...and, without any proof, I think that limit is 66 yards...but also Tucker kicked at a lower than ideal angle'. It might take 20 years but I'll bet you $10 it gets broken. More stadiums are indoors, kickers will get bigger and they continue to improve. I say this as a Ravens fan.
Exactly. People don't remember that the 62 yard field goal that lasted for so many years was thought to be unbreakable. Usain bolt's record in the 100 m was thought to be impossible. As players become stronger and taller and nutrition and fitness becomes more sophisticated these records will sooner or later be broken. Even the long jump record was thought to never be broken and it was. For all of them there was science that says it is impossible. Junk science is not science.
The most amazing thing about Justin Tucker is that he made the Ravens forget about their other all time great kicker, Matt Stover, who is easily a top 15 kicker all time, and maybe top 10.
Remember, you’re the guy who said a home team would NEVER play in its own stadium for a Super Bowl and a Super Bowl would NEVER go into overtime. Tom Brady proved you wrong twice! Never say never. I still love your videos and bad jokes, though.
There's one thing you forgot: free kicks. A free kick is a FG attempt that can be taken when you fair catch a punt. The defense has to stay 10 yards downfield, and the kicker can run up on the ball from as far away as he wants. This is occasionally utilized when a team punts in the final seconds of the first half, and could definitely make a new record with the help of favorable wind conditions.
Heavy wind could absolutely lead to this record being broken. It's just a small chance of happening. I wish Mark tried some test with wind with that high 40° launch angle.
When Elam tied Dempsey's record, Shanahan was asked about it after the game. Shanahan said "I think Jason got him by half a foot.". Only the old heads will get that. I don't know if Shanahan meant it as a joke, but that's comedy gold right there.
God thats funny. I'd bet Dempsey would laugh. It's almost as hysterical as the premise of this video. This guy talks about the unlikely launch angle (all 55 plus are launched very low) and the :circumstance. Dude, that circumstance has arisen often enough that while many are missed there have been 25 60 plus FG's made in HFL history, 10 of those in just the last 5 years, 14 by kickers still active with Gano Akers Maher and now Tucker equalling Dempseys 63 at sea level. Of course it will be broken, but there iIS a limit. Betore you pop off with such an air of unimpeachable authority, do your homework. In order to kick a ball farther and farther it must be comprssed more and more. Eventually a point will be reached that the ball will not hold it's integrity and either burst or not travel symetrically to the force applied, like trying to throw a potato chip.
@@dennisshoup2135 The ball is never going to be the limiting factor. Watch Mark Rober's video where his robot kicks one >100 yards (distance wise.. trajectory slightly off. He applied 50% more foot power than Matt Prater consistently and easily beat him, so there's potential.
Allegiant is the highest elevation domed stadium in the league, having nearly 1500 more feet of elevation than Ford field. And in the craziest scenario possible the record could be broken at Estadio Azteca, 2000 ft above Mile High.
It took 28 years for Jason Elam to be the first person to tie Tom Dempsey’s 63 yard FG record and 43 years for Matt Prater to finally break it by 1 yard with a 64 yarder. Then it only took 8 years to break the record by 2 yards?!?! 😳
Before Prater hit his 64 yarder, Tom Dempsey was the first to connect from the long time record distance of 63 yards, against the lions. And, he was born without the toes on his kicking foot Edited, fixed a typo
@@shanestanton8 correct. I'm saying without toes you wouldn't have to do that. You could club it with the front. The connect soccer style because that's the easiest flat part to access and use. No toes = no problem
What's crazy is I've seen Tucker hit 70 yard field goals during warm ups as him just messing around. Obviously during a game it's different for many reasons but Tucker has hit 70 yarders before. Just never during a game.
Thus, the point I tried to make in a very long comment. But you brought the right stuff to the conversation. When I was a kid, the Baltimore Colts practiced at my school during the baseball/football overlap. I remember standing just a few feet away from the punter (Dave Lee) when he was practicing. He could kick 70-75-yarders nearly every time. Even from 20 feet away, I could feel the impact in my gut. I went down to the other end where Alvin Haymond was returning punts. When he took off, the dirt from his cleats was flying up about six feet in the air behind him! You really get a much different perspective on these athletes, up close. I stood nearby when they were doing practice plays. Linemen did what they would consider "moderate" contact. But up close, I felt that their friendly contact would have absolutely flattened me, and I was on JV and varsity in those days. Gino Marchetti, Jim Parker -- OMG, what BEASTS! (And yet, Parker was the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. He liked to clown around with folks. Artie Donovan was a lot of fun, too. He retired when I was in 5th or 6th grade, but came out to school from time to time, afterward.) Oops! I digressed big time. Sorry.
Why do you keep saying it hit the “front” of the crossbar? It clearly hit just barely aft of the center of mass of the crossbar. If it hit the front it would have bounced out instead of through.
Congrats, Adam. You didn't have to punch a wall this weekend as your Giants upped the Saints in freaking OT. BOTH New Jersey teams went into OT!!! Both teams are very bad at finishing games. Looking forward to your bragging tonight on Dumpster Fire.
Janikowski had the leg for it in his prime (not talking the ridiculous 76 yarder) bit he was not really accurate in those distances despite his build. He still got a lot of kicks from long distance. He partied too much in his early days when he had the physical gift for it. Had he tuned his accuracy at that time you could well have seen a 70 then. However it’s only a matter of time before another kicker comes along with the build for it. I was watching some alternative game a few weeks ago (maybe American flag football?) and the one kicker was a beast physically.
What makes this even worse (for fans of both teams) is that Justin Tucker was almost NEVER used after this point in the season. Harbaugh kept trying to go for it to win games when he had a record-holding kicker on his team. And Detroit lost on a record-breaking kick from a kicker that was rarely used again after that game

i can’t wait for the video next week saying this CAN be broken similar to the MLB expansion video. in the right circumstances stances it could be broken. in Denver with wind going for the win with a second left.
Nope. We'll see a 70 yarder someday. Technology keeps changing, such as the field, the shoes, etc. There's a great video explaining something similar. Basically Jessie Owens is 14 strides behind Bolt. But when you factor in the changes is shoes, running surface, etc. he is only 1 stride behind him.
"Anything that CAN happen, WILL happen, and happen INFINITELY OFTEN." That is science saying yes, yes it will. P.s. I watched Jason Hanson kick it through from 25 on a kickoff after telling anouncers he would do so.
Just watched the Cowboys vs Eagles on sunday night football and Brandon Aubrey kicked a 60 yarder that had PLENTY of room. It wasn’t record-breaking, but if the Cowboys were 6-7 yards back and they tried the kick, it would’ve been
There’s been 70s in pregames, there have been a few that would have cleared much further. Graham Gano’s 63 yarder in 2018 had several yards more in it.
One other part of this "ideal" kick was that the low launch angle gave it the forward momentum to tumble over the crossbar. What an outstanding effort!
I was a punter in college (U of Florida). As a punter we would practice with the kickers. In the 1987 season we had two kickers who could make kicks from 70 yards. One of them, Robert McGinty had the strongest leg I have ever seen. He was a transfer from the University of Auburn. I stood beside him and watched him kick multiple 70 yard field goals in a row. I also saw a 67 yard field goal made in a pre-season game, just before the half, not Jason Elam. This was a kicker fighting for a job. You would think making the longest kick in NFL history would have sealed the deal for him, but it did not. Unfortunately, I don’t remember his name. Consequently, I believe the record will be broken.
It will likely be broken eventually, the thing with the NFL is they don’t really care about distance vs accuracy, in particular from 50 yards in. Thanks for the comment, enjoyed reading it!

Fair catch kicks can be done from a tee only in high school, they need to be place kicked or drop kicked in the NFL. You see kickoffs from tees go through the endzone all the time, those would be 75 yard field goals
There's something about doinking field goals in the last two years. I know there have been doinks in the past, but they've felt way more frequent in recent history.
As a lifelong Lions fan, I just had to laugh. It’s almost a rite of passage as a Detroiter to experience this kind of uncanny disappointment at least once a year. Had this happened in a year where we were making a playoff push, I would have been heated. However it’s a big rebuild year, so I honestly had to just applaud the tremendous kick.
Worse luck than so many realize/ Watch the play clock. On the last incomplete pass the Ravens CLEARLY don't snap the ball in time which means a 5 yard penalty, so no kick {at least a made one) and I may be wrong but maybe even a 10 second runoff so NO KICK AT ALL.
He’s not saying the kick can’t be made. The kick can definitely made with the right circumstances. It’s just that these circumstances are so astronomically rare that it will never be repeated.
I find it interesting how the younger generations love to speak in such absolutes. "This record will never be broken" "This is the best in the entire world". "I will NEVER ...." You get the idea. It demonstrates how naive they are.
Writers have written in absolutes since the beginning of commercial publications; it draws an audience. Heck, the famous first line of a Tale of Two Cities "It was the best of times it was the worst of times" pokes fun at the phenomenon. Less well known is the end of the phrase "in short, the period was so far like the present period that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only." remember this was written in 1859 and the story is set 1775 It's not naivete; if it gets eyes it gets money
Science is a myth. I'm predicting someone will break this record within the next 5 seasons. There's a lot of amazing kickers coming into the league (Also a good tail wind would help the kick go further)
Especially since both Prater and Janikowski have both kicked them 70+ yards before...not in games but they've done it so it's possible. The likelihood if the defense not trying to block it at all is slim, and the angles are so low on kicks that far that defenders can block them quite easily by putting their hands up. Still, it's not even close to being impossible, just unlikely.
His "Science" tells him it won't happen again, and my eyes having watched kickers routinely hitting 55 yard field goals and clearing it by plenty tells me it'll be done soon.👍
The issue is more of the conditions a coach would allow it to take place. The same conditions as this record kick is basically the only time it would happen. The kicking team has to be down by three or fewer and time would expire after the kick. If they miss, the team loses. If they make it, they either win or tie and go to overtime. Some coaches might not attempt it even at that and rather try for a Hail Mary or some music city miracle stuff. I think it will be broken, but it may take some time.
@@honolulublues5548 that's really it despite conditions and the kicker it's solely dependant on would a coach call a 67 of longer field goal attempt or would he just go for a hail Mary
theoretically with the right wind conditions (tail wind) it could be broken, however, it would take a perfect set of circumstances, and that is extremely unlikely
I'm pretty sure it can be beaten. Cowboys kicker made a 66 yarder recently if my memory proves right. It didn't count because of a flag but he made it.
This was done in a dome with zero wind. If he gets a kick from 5-10 yards further with a good wind blowing at his back he could get over 70 yards easy. Using the exact same trajectory he used for the 66 yarder.
So wait a minute.... 70 yard in "pre game" so he doesn't have to kick it higher than the defensive line who might try jumping up with hands up see where I'm going with this
What’s even crazier is how dangerous looking at that kick was he was nearly inches away from blowing his knee out, slipping, ankle injury, anything. What a risk and what an achievement
I noticed that, too. I've always wanted to see that in slo-mo from that angle. Notice also how close his plant foot is to the ball. It looks like he misses kicking his left foot by only an inch or two. That clip was one good take-away from this otherwise baloney-packed video. Edit: I wonder what kinds of special exercises he must do in order to protect from injury. And not just his left leg. That right leg and foot are going through some pretty extreme stuff, too. Anyway, good comment.
Technically, it was a little longer than 66 yards. If the goalpost crossbar was on the ground, it would have been a linear 66 yards from placeholder to the crossbar. But since the crossbar is elevated straight up 90 degrees from that spot, the arc angle is lengthened, so point-to-point is actually more.
It was so insane to see this and have him in fantasy. I was flabbergasted when I looked at the points that day. I only won that day because of Justin. And didn't Lose overall and have to wax my legs as a result.

Add to this the fact that this happened below sea level in New Orleans. Yes, his record has been broken, but the man was just so far ahead of his time.

The Holy Scriptures say otherwise on curses. Moreover, the Lions just need competent leadership and players, just like any other team. @@Samurai31631 All of his SB wins with the Pats too?

A world record is only “unbreakable” until someone breaks it 🤷♂️
And tucker hit a 70 at mile high too

Less well known is the end of the phrase "in short, the period was so far like the present period that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only." remember this was written in 1859 and the story is set 1775
It's not naivete; if it gets eyes it gets money
Science is a myth. I'm predicting someone will break this record within the next 5 seasons. There's a lot of amazing kickers coming into the league (Also a good tail wind would help the kick go further)
I wouldn’t say in the next 5 seasons, but definitely in less than 15
Especially since both Prater and Janikowski have both kicked them 70+ yards before...not in games but they've done it so it's possible. The likelihood if the defense not trying to block it at all is slim, and the angles are so low on kicks that far that defenders can block them quite easily by putting their hands up. Still, it's not even close to being impossible, just unlikely.
Yeah Evan McPherson will do it I’m calling it
dude said science is a myth
@@rpsnider85 Will never understand how a low angle will go for it, even Pat McAfee said that
There’s one flaw,Justin tucker hit a 70 yard field goal plenty of times just not in a real game
At least at the moment, but players are getting stronger as time goes on
I'm pretty sure it can be beaten. Cowboys kicker made a 66 yarder recently if my memory proves right. It didn't count because of a flag but he made it.
I know it's just preseason, but lol already.
This was done in a dome with zero wind. If he gets a kick from 5-10 yards further with a good wind blowing at his back he could get over 70 yards easy. Using the exact same trajectory he used for the 66 yarder.
Dallas cowboys just made a complete 66 yard fg
They literally showed Tucker hitting 70 yard FGs in pre game against Denver lol but okay
Yeah cuz they were in game . Ok
So wait a minute.... 70 yard in "pre game" so he doesn't have to kick it higher than the defensive line who might try jumping up with hands up see where I'm going with this
@@Da_Infamous Jason Elam kicked on 69 yards in 2001 that just missed left of uprights. th-cam.com/video/eu8EYmJRy70/w-d-xo.html
That reaction at the beginning made me smile. I'm a much older Lions fan. I'm used to it. My default is to assume they'll blow any given game.
I feel for you.
Just got tied in a pre season Dallas game.
Yes, but field goals aren't measured from ground to ground. Nobody even considers that.
Math and science isn't always right. Records are meant to be broken.
It was so insane to see this and have him in fantasy. I was flabbergasted when I looked at the points that day. I only won that day because of Justin. And didn't Lose overall and have to wax my legs as a result.
