  • My ray of sunshine for this week. I hope you like it! :-)
Battmann was a composer/organist. But he wrote also dance music. If you listen to this piece, to be played at the most Holy moment of of French Mass, you must think that he mixed up big time in this piece. Look at the pedal cam. Dancing feet! This is a distinguished piece with a smile. A ray of sunshine. For everyone who wants it, for everyone who needs it. Enjoy! (Nils: you gave me the idea to record this piece. No fun piece but a serious piece that carry’s a smile in it!)

Beautiful, Rien! Yes indeed - a piece for a serious moment, but a moment of great mystery and one filled with hope and joy! Wonderful sunshine 🌞

Thanks Jerry. Tournemire has a more intellectual approach. Battmann wanted to use easy to understand music for his services. I like both approaches!

Haha you’ve noticed! It’s my first upload without a head set. I have a few monitor speakers. Yesterday I could make a recording in a empty house. My wife and kids where all away. They don’t like organ music so most of the time I play and record with my headphones. I wanted to release a piece that has a smile on it. The pedal part is really funny, although it’s a serious piece. And it’s a nice practise piece. It’s not that easy to play. Nice weekend to you too! :-)

Thank you for introducing me to a new composer's music. I always learn a lot from you.😍 Pedal performance is impressive👍 Bedankt Rien🌹

Thanks Clara, Battmann wrote “easy to understand” music. It’s a nice contrast with for instance Tournemire. :-)

Very nice ! The pedal is waltzing ! It's the kind of piece my choir chief wouldn't allow me to play... congratulations Rien, I wish you a nice sunny week-end !

Thanks Rémi! Battmann is nevertheless a serious organ- and choir music composer in the French Catholic tradition. He ‘s from the east. Maybe churches over there are more open to this kind of style? I’ve added the link to the opus in the description now. :-) great weekend!

Lovely piece and you registered Nancy almost like an accordion! Thanks for highlighting another lesser known composer.

Accordion, yes!! Didn't know the composer, too. Rien opens new worlds for us 👍

@@MarkusDrejaOrganist Your right Markus. I wanted the pedal to stand out with a soft reed, but not too loud. So I’ve added the Basson 8’. And yes it’s one of the main bass stops of a accordeon. (And I have two accordeons). :-)

Certainly an unusual piece, competently played Rien. I will print a copy. It's quite tame compared with some of music played during masses, particularly in France around the time of Louis XVI. Years ago someone loaned me a recording of a somewhat outrageous organ mass in C major by Josse-Francois-Joseph Benaut. I tried to get the score however the only one I could find was one in C minor from an obscure German publisher. They said it was the first copy to go to Australia. [Nowadays many of his composition can be freely downloaded.] I played it twice at lunchtime recitals leaving out a couple of absolutely banal movements then a couple of years ago I played it in recital following a morning mass . The priest introduced it saying that it illustrated what occurred in the latter 1700's. He also said, "If Colin played this during a mass you would not see him again!" Reading about Benaut's sad life on the internet is very interesting; including his death.

Thanks Colin. After reading your comment I listened to the Kyrie. And I must say that I liked it. It has as a uplifting character. I’m gonna search for some scores!

How tastes change over time! During Mass, Élévation is the ritual raising of the consecrated Sacred Body and Blood of Christ during the celebration of the Eucharist - and I happen to really like the way Jacques Louis Battmann expressed this musically in the nineteenth century (and I smile when I read Remi's comment that his Choir Master would not allow it today in 2022, as it would be deemed too frivolous for devout worship!). Do I think it would give offence to the Almighty? Certainly not, for as you say, Rien, it is a ray of sunshine and in the darkness we now all face, anything to lighten the mood is welcome relief indeed: bravo!

Thanks Graham. If I look to Battmann’s imposant oeuvre than I can conclude that he composed for the common public. He wanted his music to be accessible to many. He really wanted to serve the church by creating music that could be understand by the common congration. Music from Tournemire for instance is much more elitist. I like both styles. And yes, if I had a church assignment I would play this. Maybe without the reed in the pedal, but I think it’s usable. :-)

What a refreshing piece that was Rien with a nice rhythmic pulse coming to the fore. Great pedal work. Liked the rallentando towards the end. Why no headphones this time?

Thanks Jez! I have nice studio monitors with my organ. But most of the time the house is filled with kids who doesn’t like organ music or I am recording late at night…
