Rien Schalkwijk is an all-round organist with a passion for forgotten and mostly unknown organ music, both historical and contemporary. He has created a unique portfolio of pipe organ video’s and audio albums in his TH-cam Channel, showcasing his versatility and love of all genres of organ music. Rien is passionate about uncovering the lost works of forgotten composers, and finding new and exciting ways to bring their music to life. He is also dedicated to exploring the depths of the works of well-known composers, and has created a number of audio albums that are both entirely unique and deeply moving. With a deep love for music, Rien Schalkwijk is devoted to exploring the beauty of the pipe organ and discovering new ways to share its wonders with the world.

Psalm 133:3 | Klaas Jan Mulder (1930-2008) | By Rien
As a Dutch organist, I am not deeply immersed in the intricate world of Dutch (Protestant) Hymn Culture, known as "Nederlandse Koraalkunst." However, I do occasionally venture into the realm of the Dutch Grandmasters in this domain, with Klaas Jan Mulder standing out as a notable figure. This particular piece diverges from the norm, as it is typically rendered with soft voices and a full tremulant, even in the core of the chorale itself.
In my interpretation, I envisioned strolling through a bustling city center on a bleak, wet autumn day. The ancient cathedral, steeped in 800 years of history, beckoned with its wide open doors, offering respite from the downpour. As I stepped inside, the organ greeted me with a rich, warm resonance that gradually crescendoed into a powerful musical outpouring. The thunderous 32-foot reeds in the pedals unleashed a flood of sound that filled the space. Yet, as the piece unfolded, it retained the same initial warmth, leading gracefully towards its conclusion. In the final bars, a lingering solo note echoed endlessly, until the rain subsided, and the sun reemerged, shining brightly once more.
My choice of registration and playing style is a direct reflection of the vivid narrative that unfolded in my mind.
For the best listening experience, I recommend using headphones, earbuds, or a hi-fi set. The sound dynamics of the pipe organ are truly remarkable and can be fully appreciated with high-quality audio equipment.

A piece overflowing with pastoral charm! 'Zampognata' are bagpipes, and so this sweet music paints a delightful scene of shepherds serenading the beauty of nature and the gentle tranquility of imagined rural life, far from the madness of the modern world! As you remark, Rien, Amilcare Bosi is seldom performed nowadays, but a little research reveals he was born in Cremona, studied in Parma, and was for a time organist of the Santuario Santa Maria del Fonte di Caravaggio - one of the most popular religious sites in Italy. In 1948 he became musical director of the Banda S. Martino di Sergnano, a wind band for young instrumentalists. His music is certainly well suited to the gorgeous Mascioni Organ sample set, and you both register and play this pastorale with matching charm: bravo!
