  • Yoga may seem like a fitness craze known for its comfortable pants but it’s been for thousands of years. Yoga is “Citta Vritti Nirodhah” according to Sage Patanjali circa 900 BC. It means Yoga is a practice of controlling the mind. This is done in a step by step path by doing asanas, breathing exercises, pranayama (breath control) and by meditation and relaxation.

Dr. Rashmi Vaidya, a breast surgeon at Ironwood Women’s Centers, uses Yoga to help her patients. She says, “These are some simple exercises to help with post op recovery of range of movement of the arms. They also help breath control and in reduction of anxiety.” Patients have been excited to incorporate Yoga into their breast surgery recovery. On May 31, 2020, Dr. Vaidya lead a Zoom Teleconference on Yoga for Positive Health which you can see here. www.wefus.org/yoga-for-positi...

Thank you so much for this video! I had a unilateral mastectomy 9 days ago and the simple "spider your fingers up a wall" exercise I was sent home with has not been effective; my muscles are so tight it's painful & mobility has dramatically reduced. I'm an active athlete and dancer and can really feel the difference with doing these movements. Will be doing this 3x a day to take baby steps back to functionality!

14 days out also unilateral and found this because I did too much this morning... I always push too hard on the up the wall that I sometimes feel nauseous, relatively fit but nowhere near athlete level.

Try to warm up with shrugs and shoulder backward rolls before you start your physio, then bend 90 degrees and do shoulder swings and then circles both ways to warm muscles. It does get better, promise, just was stupid to attempt rows and light weights this morning esp with having had axillary clearance and dealing with weight of tissue expander.
