I Tried Rolling Up a Random Dungeon From The DMG Tables!

  • My players found a cave they were about to enter as the session ended. This was the perfect opportunity for me to try something I had wanted to try for a while. I decided to roll up a random dungeon using the tables in the Dungeon Masters Guide. Roll for rooms, exits, passageways, smells, furnishings, monsters, loot, magic items, stairs, traps, tricks and more. This took me quite a long time to put together and after I played it through with my players (who didn't clear it even after almost 30 hours of play) I realized I needed to adjust. The random table rolling method is great for the basic skeleton of your dungeon but adding specific details, monsters, npcs and what not is what makes a dungeon immersive. Having the rolled map and basic population makes it easy to incorporate specifics that link to your players' characters and the greater story. Definitely a fun experience and a great way to learn how to make a dungeon and plan a dungeon crawl!

    That is the great thing about multiple levels, each one can be separate and entirely different as well as progressively more difficult. This allows the PC's to determine when they've had enough, (unless they are foolhardy). Enjoyed watching this.

      Thanks! I agree, I love being able to have multiple levels that can change thematically, mechanically or even just in difficulty. It adds a great depth of integration into dungeons. Cheers

    I only used the original AD&D DMG, it had random tables as well. The results were ... random but sometimes I had to "fix" things. This harkens back to early days when dungeons were just a collection of rooms which didn't have much of a theme or storyline, and it was expected that monsters would stay in one room all the time. 😋 Dungeon Geomorphs were released around that time, that was when people didn't really use miniatures yet and players drew maps on graph paper. Things have changed quite a bit since then.

      Yea I've had to "fix" things as well to make it run smoother but hey that's a small price to pay to run a cool dungeon that your players enjoy aha

    Nice... I'm experimenting with a similar approach, except I'm using a "greatest hits collection" of tables from AD&D, 3rd ed. and 1st ed. Pathfinder. I'm curious as to how long it took for you to generate/populate the dungeon and I'd love to hear more of your takes on the topic. - Thanks

    • @RabbitholeHobbies
      @RabbitholeHobbies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh sweet! I'd be interested to see the final result of that. I've considered doing a follow up video or two for this dungeon, mainly going more in depth about the process of tweaking the population process while running it and actually running it. I'd say pre - game I spent about 7 hours generating the dungeon and then another 3 or 4 (hard to tell) adjusting during game play.

    This video made me so happy. The 5e DMG genuinely has some of the best random dungeon tables, I use it all the time for my ACKs campaign.

    • @RabbitholeHobbies
      @RabbitholeHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

      This comment made me so happy! Aha I'm glad you liked the video. I love the random dungeon tables for 5e honestly, this one was a bit time consuming but you can bang out dungeons so quick if you need one. I've never tried ACK, I don't know too much about it but I have heard it's super fun. What do you like most about it?

    • @Motavian
      @Motavian ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RabbitholeHobbies Aw man, ACKs is one of the many retroclones (it does the BASIC rules, or more accurately B/X since it goes to level 14 for most character classes.)
      I like old-school DnD because character combat abilities (which are much fewer in number) don't out compete creative problem solving and the game looks more like a natural conversation rather than a rigid game, it's actually best played with the "game" part under the hood (for when the DM needs it) and instead players telling you what their characters are doing.
      ACKs is great because it's got a lot of tools to help build a sandbox (and it gets pretty detailed with optional info on trade routes, supply/demand based of terrain, etc) and it's got procedures for when players eventually become lords of their own castles, mage towers, thief guilds, etc.

    • @RabbitholeHobbies
      @RabbitholeHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's really neat I'll look into it. The more I play 5e, the more I realize I might like some of the older editions. I end up customizing so many of the rules and mechanics to fit my (and my players) play style and i keep finding out alot of those changes are rules present in older editions. I really like the sounds of the ACK optional info you mentioned to add depth into world building and for additional downtime activity possibilities. Very cool thank you for commenting, I'm fired up to learn more always!
