House of The Dragon Season 1 and Fire and Blood Comparison (Book vs Show)
After finally watching season 1 of house of the dragon and reading through all the corresponding parts of the book fire and blood I decided to make this video to talk about them. In this video I talk about the similarities, differences and what was changed for better and for worse. Both the book and the show are great especially if you enjoy the world of Westeros, Game of Thrones/ Song of Ice and Fire and are into delving into the history and lore of that world. A great adaptation and expansion in a very compelling and engaging fantasy world.

After falling behind on my Rabbithole Hobbies schedule and seemingly letting myself down on a goal I had set, I decided that I needed to re-evaluate how I look at success, goal setting, time management and re-define my priorities. love it! gave me inspiration for my own lighthouse, I'm building one for the Lamenting Lighthouse module.
Great! That's wonderful let me know how turns out!
I'm 2 chapters away from finishing A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm not ready for one thing and only one thing about Fire and Blood. All fantasy that I've read before was POV. It makes everything به that much more real and alive. I've heard that Fire and Blood is written in the style of history books, which sounds quite cold
Honestly it is a bit cold feeling but if you can get into the idea of loving the lore I think you can get through it. Think of it like a really long prequel aha
@@RabbitholeHobbies it kicked in naturally lol. I'm enjoying it so far (Jaehaerys just got the throne)
Half this video consists of a lady trying to zipper a dog into things. 👍👍
Thats an important part of camping 🤣
you should try out SANDBOX GENERATOR. they have a great dungeon creator
That is the great thing about multiple levels, each one can be separate and entirely different as well as progressively more difficult. This allows the PC's to determine when they've had enough, (unless they are foolhardy). Enjoyed watching this.
Thanks! I agree, I love being able to have multiple levels that can change thematically, mechanically or even just in difficulty. It adds a great depth of integration into dungeons. Cheers
How easy you make this look is really encouraging. I've been wanting to make some of these for variable use in an AD&D 1e game I'm in, and this has been a great inspiration (I was overthinking the bricks). For mine I don't plan on using toothpicks in a foam base, but rather zinc nuts to weight the walls down. They'll certainly be less stable, but more versatile, and we'll be moving them constantly as we go through the dungeon, reusing the same few, so that fits our needs better. ¡Thanks for the inspiration!
You're certainly welcome! I think using nuts as weights in the walls is a great idea for easier movability and would love to hear back from you on how it worked. I've also seen people do that and then add magnets into the dungeon tiles so they snap into place which could be cool.
¡Thanks for the response! My brother and I made our first batch of walls, and learned a lot in the process. Applying too much glass-lustre mod podge so it was visible, not getting into the grooves with our initial darkwash enough so there's bits of white showing, and not really knowing how to do the moldy green darkwash at the end (one of ours looks really good in that area, but that was only by mistake). I've oft heard of using magnets; maybe we'll try it but for now the nut weights hold them in place well enough. The main con against magnets is it can ruin the short ends of the walls with holes. @@RabbitholeHobbies
@@theuniversewithin9151 Yea it takes some getting used to to get the amounts bang on but it sounds like the weights work. If you want, shoot me a pic on instagram.. I'd love to see your creation!

It is really surprising that Plant Best, maker of this product, is clueless about QR codes to video instructions on how to use their product. After all, most of us have never used this product before and have no clue how much water to start with, how much water to add after seeding, where to keep the Greenhouse Kit, and how often to water it. Finally, should we put them in a pot with the skin around the Husk or not. So thank you for clearing out a lot of unknown with this product. It seems like a good idea but one has to see it in action.

Is this book also season 2 of house of dragons?
Would love to hear an update of what you thought of the show now that the first season has been aired
I actually just finished watching the last episode (a bit late I know aha) so there most certainly will be an update to follow soon!
This video made me so happy. The 5e DMG genuinely has some of the best random dungeon tables, I use it all the time for my ACKs campaign.
This comment made me so happy! Aha I'm glad you liked the video. I love the random dungeon tables for 5e honestly, this one was a bit time consuming but you can bang out dungeons so quick if you need one. I've never tried ACK, I don't know too much about it but I have heard it's super fun. What do you like most about it?
@@RabbitholeHobbies Aw man, ACKs is one of the many retroclones (it does the BASIC rules, or more accurately B/X since it goes to level 14 for most character classes.) I like old-school DnD because character combat abilities (which are much fewer in number) don't out compete creative problem solving and the game looks more like a natural conversation rather than a rigid game, it's actually best played with the "game" part under the hood (for when the DM needs it) and instead players telling you what their characters are doing. ACKs is great because it's got a lot of tools to help build a sandbox (and it gets pretty detailed with optional info on trade routes, supply/demand based of terrain, etc) and it's got procedures for when players eventually become lords of their own castles, mage towers, thief guilds, etc.
That's really neat I'll look into it. The more I play 5e, the more I realize I might like some of the older editions. I end up customizing so many of the rules and mechanics to fit my (and my players) play style and i keep finding out alot of those changes are rules present in older editions. I really like the sounds of the ACK optional info you mentioned to add depth into world building and for additional downtime activity possibilities. Very cool thank you for commenting, I'm fired up to learn more always!
can i read this book online for free?
I'm sure you could find it, but you could definitely go to a library.
Which page, the show will be started?
Off the top of my head I think somewhere around page 100 but don't quote me on that lmao
@@RabbitholeHobbies thanx 🙏♥️😂
@@hima9379 No problem!
I have a few questions, if you dont mind me asking. How descriptive and detailed are these events in the book? is it as descriptive as "a song of ice and fire"" was or was it more vague? I ask these questions because i have a hunch that, this book was written for the purpose of making a TV show out of it (it was published like 5 months before the last episode aired), and i am guessing that this book may have major bulletpoints that are described but the finer details are pretty vague. That is perfect for show runners, and writers to adapt because as long as they hit those bullet points, it will be canon, and they have latitude to do what they want to fill in the blanks. I am also assuming that George RR martin is a consultant of the show as well.
As I've said I stopped reading pretty early on but from what I did read the events aren't portrayed as in depth as ASOIAF. The detail is more in a historical context. I think you nailed it with your hunch to be honest.
I think you might be accurate with this Jeffrey...
Saw a video summary on the book and now have simultaneously ruined the book and show. FML 🤦💀
How did it get ruined?!
I got this in 2018 hood book
I have no intentions to watch Game of Thrones but when I watched the trailer of House of the dragon...It dawned on me that I should watch it before I read the books (which, my cousin suggested it too). After I watched the first episode of house of the dragon...it gave me an urge that I should read fire and blood.
Watch before you read? Interesting I've never heard of people saying that's the best order of operations. What's the reason for watching first?
I think it gives you faces, names, places so you dont start from scratch
@@TheExpertTutorials This is actually a great point for these books! I have definitely come around on this since watching the series and then reading over the part of the book that correspondes
Honestly, I really enjoyed this book. Felt so much like a history book you’d find in Westeros and as someone who really enjoys history, I was all for it. Parts of it dragged on like the early parts of Jahaerys I’s reign and Aegon III’s regency but for the most part, it was a really detailed dive into the first 5.5 Targayren kings and I love that George wasn’t shy to write about a lot of the fucked up shit that happened during this time
Right!? Definitely agree about feeling like a Westerosi history book, which I think was interesting.
@@RabbitholeHobbies the names are to much
@@francissemazzi1530 yea I agree, but watching the show definitely helps with that. Having a face to link a name to, especially when so many names are soo similar...
Hey that’s cool you have the smaller mass market paperback edition. I didn’t even know that existed. Does that one have illustrations too? I have the hardcover one.
What!? No! My copy has no illustrations! What are the illustrations in the hardcover? Does it say who the illustrator is?
@@RabbitholeHobbies there’s a ton, they’re mostly of the Targaryen family and their dragons. Shame you don’t get to see them, they’re really well done
That's fantastic, I'm sure I'll see them eventually, now that I know to look for them. Thanks to you!
@@RabbitholeHobbies I too have the hardcover Harper Voyager (UK) edition and the illustrations are pretty cool, though in black and white. They're drawn by Dough Wheatley. I like this hardcover edition that I've got, though I prefer the looks of the Bantam hardcover one (both dust jacket and overall redness of the design).
@@TheTricktracktruck Man I never go for the hardcovers,,, maybe i need to rethink this
When you mention them probably not making a history documentary series, do you know about the "History and Lore" series that they did for the main show? They did one for each season and it's hours and hours long, fully animated story that goes over basically the entire back history of everything in the universe. It's amazing. They are read by the actors and some are the same story presented from different view points. From listening to you, sounds like you would love to know more of the backstory of Westeros and since you said you binged the show before the final season, you might not have been aware of them. I would highly recommend checking them out. Can just search "History and lore" and you'll find them all. Thought I'd let you know. Excited for House of the Dragon!
You're right I had no idea but I'm definitely going to watch that! That's is super cool, thank you!
I only used the original AD&D DMG, it had random tables as well. The results were ... random but sometimes I had to "fix" things. This harkens back to early days when dungeons were just a collection of rooms which didn't have much of a theme or storyline, and it was expected that monsters would stay in one room all the time. 😋 Dungeon Geomorphs were released around that time, that was when people didn't really use miniatures yet and players drew maps on graph paper. Things have changed quite a bit since then.
Yea I've had to "fix" things as well to make it run smoother but hey that's a small price to pay to run a cool dungeon that your players enjoy aha
When I was bored I'd do this for solo adventuring with the original AD&D DMG.
the dragon baby in the back is a nice touch🤣i read it with my dragons too.
Amazing! Puff has definitely watched some of the dragon heavy episodes as well. She loves it haha
I thought I had finished Season 2 years ago. When I started Season 3 I was surprised to realize I had no idea what was going on. Went back and am now about halfway through Season 2. Coincidentally was watching this morning before your video went up.
I'm excited for you, I would love to watch this for the first time again aha. I take it you're a fan of the series?
This was a great review! I’m only 20 pages in and I started feeling like I should read it along with the show. I didn’t know what to expect for this book lol. Does it get at least somewhat less text-bookish?
I don't think so, I did flip through it a bit but never finished it I decided to wait for the show and try reading it at the same time to see how that goes aha
@@RabbitholeHobbies I think I’ll do the same then 😂 thanks!
@@stevietv420 Nice! Hopefully we made the right call! I'm starting to think maybe because of the way this book reads that to fill out the show into a long series they'll take each time period from the book and flesh it out. So whereas the original series was essentially one book per season, this will be 4 or 5 (or however many) seasons per book.
@@RabbitholeHobbies maybe! That would be cool. Hopefully their adapting goes better than season 8’s
@@stevietv420 I think that would be sweet too! And yea the problem with season 8 was they weren't adapting anything. Not only was it written for TV instead of as a book that was adapted, but it seemed rushed.

Great review. I just got into d&d. I have this book on the way. Just creating characters at this point but I hoped this would expand my options a little.
Thanks and nice you're going to have a blast, there are lots of options in this book me and my players are really looking forward to using that we still haven't. Cheers
Just picked the novel up today!
Sweet! Enjoy the journey!
Please tell me which part of book i should read to understand house of the dragon
I honestly can't tell you because I have purposefully tried to learn as little about the show to avoid spoilers. My assumption though is that it will go one of two ways, they will be close enough that they will compliment each other and you could almost read and watch at the same tome or be so different it won't matter if you read the book at all.
❤️🇬🇷
For me the lore was really important. But I think a huge miss for the book was not adding monsters from each module they have for 5e. Because to me that feels like the multiverse of 5E so not having like the specific monsters from each book was a miss. But I really do like how if you don’t already own Volos or the tome of foes you can just buy 1 book instead of 2. Anything that makes it easier for new players to jump in or even new dungeon masters is still appreciated.
Yea that's a good point, if they were just amalgamating books why not make a compendium of ALL monsters or at least some from everything. But yea I think making it easier and cheaper for new players is a great aspect.
