    “That’s just the universe, I suppose.” is my favorite explanation of all time. Connor is the only person on TH-cam who can start in the middle ear and work his way out to the nature of reality and back again in one video.

    Thank you. I had an allergic reaction to dust. A couple of weeks later, my ear felt deaf.. I went to the Dr's and the Nurse suggested Sudafed tablets and Sudafed nasal spray because she said I had fluid in both ears. I've only used the tablets, but after a few days - they're not really helping, so I've been massaging my ears, down my jawline and neck etc and I'm going to try the nasal spray now. I've had a perforated eardrum in the past and it's so scary when you realise fluid is building up again - having a perforated eardrum is one of the most painful things that I've ever experienced. Listening to your video makes me want to go into medicine! I'll leave it to the professionals though :). A very detailed, informative and helpful video - thank you so much x

    The ear is one of the most fascinating structures, even in the earliest stages of embryonic development the middle ear bones are being developed. They've been evolving for millions of years and learning about them is just fascinating.

    As a former ENT scrub nurse, I find your videos extremely enjoyable. Now I'm going back 50 years when I started, so your educational videos have really given me a much better understanding to what we were doing. I've scrubbed on all kinds of ear procedures, but never truly understood what the surgeon was doing, beyond the basic anatomy. I dealt more with the instrumentation, and anticipating what was needed at any moment during the surgery. Thank you for the effort you put into these valuable lessons. I wonder if you might have heard of some of the prestigious surgeons I've had the donor of working with. I worked in Ct., USA...at Yale New Haven Hospital.

    Once I had an office mate that was an ex military pilot. He explained what they taught him in the Air Force. When doing the Valsalva nose pressurization, move your head to left or right. The Eustachian tube opening in throat is like a a closed lip. Tilting head and neck left and right helps stretch and open the lip of the Eustachian tube. Also, i find moving my jaw left and right is very beneficial to popping my ear while i pressurize my nose. Hope this helps!

    You explained something that makes sense in my situation. I have been seeing ENT since 2016 for Vertigo/Marnier's. 2 hospitals and 4 Specialists, nothing resolved. Until I recently started using a sinus flush daily during allergy season. I had a series of sinus and gum infections from an old bridge work on my front teeth. Antibiotics worked for a while, only to return. Frustrated, i began tackling my ear, sinus, and throat simultaneously daily. I have significant improvement in my hearing and sleep. It's a ritual now to cure vertigo from the watery ear. Excercises for vertigo had no lasting results.

  • @mischelepentz3613

    I had repeated ear infections from the time I was 6 months old until I had my ear surgery when I was 12 and they put in a grommet. Looking back now, I think it may have stemmed from a dairy allergy because every time I eat dairy now as an adult I get a stuffed up nose and sometimes an earache as well.
    By the way, I looked up acoustic neuroma and the current name seems to be vestibular schwannoma. It is a rare (1 in 100,000 people) but potentially deadly benign tumor that develops on the auditory nerves. If it grows too large it can begin to invade the middle ear and/or the brain stem. Mine had invaded both. I have a completely man made ear from the eardrum in because it “ate” everything in its way. Invasion of the brain stem causes slow paralysis until it hits the wrong nerve and paralyzes a necessary function (heart, lungs, etc). That is why I was partially paralyzed on my left side. Because it originates from the vestibular nerve, everyone who has one or had one removed will have balance issues. I am normally fine during the day unless I make a sudden movement but can lose my balance after dark and can not drive on a highway at night. You don’t even want to know how scary it is to lose your balance while driving a car! Also, tinnitus is common in people who have or have had a vestibular schwannoma. I have learned to mostly ignore the constant whooshing noises.
    And thank you for another great informative video.

    Thank you for the wonderful tutorial on the middle ear. As a child I suffered from middle ear infections. I would have been a great candidate for tubes in the ears. However, they weren't available back then. The treatment was rather barbaric, as the y would puncture the ear drum and follow with an injection of penicillin in the backside. I'm happy to see medicine has come a long way since then.

    You mention a few different reasons the eustachian tube may become non functional, namely as a result of inflammation. I wanted to get your thoughts on this theory as a reason the eustachian tube may struggle to drain: Could it be a result of tight, irritated, weakened muscles in the neck? Specifically as a result of bad posture?
    The vagus nerve innervates the levator veli palatini and tensor veli palatini - two muscles important in the function of the eustachian tube. In the case of a chronic forward head posture, the vagus nerve can become compressed. Could it be possible that this compression of the vagus nerve is the reason the eustachian tube fails to drain?
    Thanks for the insightful video, eager to hear your response!

      Thanks, you can go to an Audiologist or ENT, both specialists can check the Eustachian tube. If there's an ongoing blockage that's not resolving on it's own or with nasal spray an ENT might order an allergy test and put a camera up your nose to have a look in the nasopharynx.

    Great video!! When I was an infant (Now 66 years old) there was something done by doctors to my RIGHT ear-there is some sort of note in my Mom's paperwork that I've seen and am trying to find again. I think this just may help in FINALLY getting to the bottom of my 6-7 year battle with Eustacian tube disfunction. My ENT has put now 4 tubes in my ear and they don't stay in anywhere near a year then the hole heals/seals up and in a very short time I'm back to square 1 again. Last July of '23 he also balloon dialated my Eustacian tube along with the insertion of the tube. In late January of '24 I'm plugged up again. My ENT seems very reluctant to put in a "Permanant' tube for some reason. I just cannot go on like this. I can only imagine what my ear drum must look like now with scar tissue from inserting 4 tubes since 2016. Any suggestions?

    Very informative. Thank you. I’ve been putting up with what I suspect to be mucus buildup in the middle ear for 7 months now. It started while I was on holiday last year, triggered by SCUBA diving. I typically find on the evening after diving my hearing will be muffled but this passes after a few hours. Last year, after a perfectly normal dive during the day, I woke in the early a.m. with severe pain in one ear that was made worse if I bent over or tried to ‘pop’ my ears. I sought advice, the resort doctor said it was ear wax, the dive master had a look and disagreed with that. I cancelled the last of my diving and returned home 2 days later, on schedule. By this time the pain was gone, but my hearing was badly affected. I had no problems during the flights home as such, just almost deaf, the only thing I could hear well was my own heartbeat and tinnitus turned up to 11
    I consulted a GP ASAP and was told I had a perforated eardrum. I didn’t believe that so bought my own otoscope and sure enough, no rupture. I was advised to take Beconase. Another GP visit a week later confirmed both eardrums were fine, the diagnosis was Eustachian tube disorder. I carried on with Beconase and twice daily nasal flushing for about a month but made no difference. Time has mostly restored my hearing but every time I swallow there is still ‘crackle’. I am able to ‘equalise’ OK but not as readily as I used to be able to. I haven’t dived since but I do plan to do so at the end of the year. I’ll be going very carefully.
    It feels like my middle ear is filled with viscous goo that just won’t go away.

    Like another commenter, I had Eustachian tube dysfunction as a child often. It was suspected to be from second hand smoke. Still bothers me sometimes as an adult but now it’s from seasonal allergies. I heard there was a fairly new procedure instead of getting ear grommets. It’s like balloon sinuplasty, but for the Eustachian tube instead. I don’t think it’s a common procedure yet though. At least it isn’t around here.

    Growing up I had grommets inserted several times over to treat persistent inner ear fluid. Eustachian tube function was very minimal and vulsava procedure difficult. Ie I couldn’t really pop my ears by pinching my nose and blowing. By age 15, my ear drums eventually became permanently permanently perforated. Dr at did tympanoplasty only for fluid to return and have grommets reinserted. Ears later another ENT rebuilt my eardrums once again. This time during surgery he inserted a probe into the Eustachian tubes to break up possible adhesions. My left ear recovered fine. No fluid build up and hearing a bit better. Right ear, however, has a major conductive loss. I can force pop my right ear but the Eustachian Tube doesn’t seem to function on its own. Feels like I have permanent fluid build up. After watching your video, ill try to pop my ear several times a day to see if it can benefit what feels like the continuous fluid build up.

      Thank you for sharing. I also have the feeling of fluid build up in my right ear. I thought it would go away but two years later it was the same. Went to an ENT and they put a grommet in my ear. They also did a new procedure which inflated a balloon into my eustachian tube to clear and stretch it out. I don't hear any difference after everything. Still muffled and can't really "pop" my right ear. Now my voice will vibrate my teeth if I talk loud. Very frustrating. I paid $4,000 for the procedure and it's worse than before.

      Possibly, mastoidectomies come in all different shapes and sizes depending on how much bone they've drilled away. The typical function of the mastoid antrum is to help regulate pressure so when your Eustachian tube gets blocked perhaps you notice it more.

    Thanks for this explanation. I've been experiencing otitis media with effusion and some slight inflammation in my ear canal. This is about the 4th or 5th time I have experienced this within the past 6 months and it's getting unbearable. Please what could be the cause of this consistent issue??

    What is the diameter of the eustachian tube pls? Does paristalsys happen in the tube to push thick mucous out? Or does it have little waving hairs to push it out? I have one of those suction bulbs to clear kids nose and liquids in the bulb just sits there. I can imagine the middle ear is like the bulb and the eustachian tube is the opening.
    I didn't known that the ear was so fascinating. The for taking the time to educate us.

    • @DurhamHearingSpecialists
      @DurhamHearingSpecialists  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It varies but an average would be about 3mm, there's some peristaltic action from the muscles surrounding the tube and cilia as well lining the tube, both help to excrete mucous into the nasopharynx.

    Brilliant explanation!! I suffered from “glue ear” in childhood which has continued into adulthood and I have had various operations to try and mitigate it. At some point I heard that prolonged exposure to tobacco smoke may have exacerbated the condition. My parents both smoked heavily. Would you consider that this may have contributed to inflammation of the Eustachian tube?

    • @DurhamHearingSpecialists
      @DurhamHearingSpecialists  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks, that's an interesting theory and probably there's some truth to it. Research has shown that second hand smoke exposure can disrupt the clearance mechanism of the Eustachian tube (the mucous and cilia action) and also lead to inflammation of the mucosa lining in the middle ear. So I wouldn't be surprised if there's a relationship there in your case.

I haven't bothered getting an official diagnosis because I wasted so much time going to doctors/ENTs that didn't give a crap. This is an excellent explanation of what I’m experiencing. Allergies this year have been nuts. My left ear has been blocked for over a month. I had similar issue 9 years ago. Do you have videos on how to get the mucus to drain? Last time, the thing that helped me was an ear popper. But that doesn’t seem to be enough this time. I have tried everything. I’m taking Sudafed and Guaifenesin and drinking lots of water. I take a xyzol at night. I have tried Navage daily, steroid nasal spray, steam, and facial massage. I can feel the pop with Valsalva maneuver. Doctor prescribed a round of prednisone. Nothing is making any impact. I’m trying to get in to see an ENT. It may be a while before I can get an appointment. I’m flying next week, so I’m a bit concerned about that.

    I had an ear infection in my left ear about a year ago and my primary doctor prescribed some ear drops. I was supposed to come back in a week or two if not better. But then Covid hit and I couldn't get an appointment for over a month. During that time my ear felt really clogged and I kept putting on a lot of ear drops. By the time was able to see a specialist I started hearing a ring in my ear 24/7. Now I had Tinnitus and It's been ringing ever since. I feel that I put in so many ear drops that it got behind my eardrum and caused Tinnitus. Is that possible? I went through a whole bottle of ear drops. Could fluid behind my eardrum cause Tinnitus? When i blow my nose with holding it My ear pops And when you go to move your ears i hear hairs touching if that makes sence
    Now the items i have ...Sleep apena, Sinus issues (stuffy) Dry scale skin at the entrance of the ear
    I think this started in the ear because of the limited ways i sleep on 1 of 2 sides My hand or arm covers my ear so i can rest with my head propped up - This will change tonight as i have a Cpap machine with a nose mask And i am waiting for a chin strap to keep the mouth closed
