So I usually get a lot of questions about keyboard stuff... and one of them is... yo bro, what is the thockiest switch? Well, besides that, another one is, what plate sounds like what? I remember I did a segment on plate stiffness and its sound pitch... this time, I decided to actually let you hear the plates themselves. For this, Evan from Australia (Engineer that helped me on this channel) sent me his own keyboard design, the HH60 to test things out with!

Wow, thank you for putting together this video! I have been considering getting an Alu plate. However, now that I have watched your video, I feel better about sticking to my FR4 plate and saving some money! This video was very informative and I really appreciated the plate sound comparisons!
From my graduating year in college when I'm just starting into the hobby and now as a newly licensed Mechanical Engineer myself, I became an instant fan of yours specially when it comes to these technical analysis stuff. Not every day you can stumble upon a keyboard content creator that has and in dept but interactive engineering perspective about keyboard reviews. That being said, CF and Alu plate will be my end game for any board, I guess. Thanks for the inspiration sir!

Pom is generally my favorite sounding & feeling plate to use. I enjoy having boards with different plates, mounting styles, & builds, but POM & PC are by far the ones I prefer & use most. Enjoyed this deep dive into different plate materials. 👍

And I do love POM. It just has a "meaty" and fulfilling sound that I enjoy. It has some bass to it, if that makes sense at all.

I came in to say that this keyboard is so underrated and unrepresented. I love my E-White HH60 that I purchased from Even. This board represents the very essence of what a foamless keyboard should sound with a unique mount for a 60 series (compared to top mount). Paired with HMX switches or even metal stem Tempeh, this board sounds amazing for the clacky profile I love. I only made a few minor mods, forces break and tape mode to settle the bit of hollowness. I love the simple design but with elegant chamfer. It's not box/wedge but it's also not so busy around the edges. I would have loved l to see this in a 65% as the added, sound, foamless I would assume but this up into the premium rank of boards like my Forever65. My next experiment is to cut up the FR4 plate and make it a half plate and use the solder PCB. I think that would address some of the hollowness without use some tape mod and bring out an even brighter sound.

This is just what I was looking for. I just ordered my first keyboard kit the Meletrix Zoom98 and their are 4-5 plate options including carbon fiber, Fr4, aluminum, Pom and brass. The brass plate is the one I was most curious about. My experience with acoustics is from building speakers so I have been trying to relate that to keyboard sound. I liked the discussion about plate mass, stiffness and density. I found it very informative. I'm new to the custom keyboard hobby. I was using the same 20 year old Steelseries Shift membrane keyboard until a couple of weeks ago when I spilled a beer on it and decided to replace it with my first mechanical keyboard. A Logitech K845ch with Cherry Blue tactile switches. I was amazed at the difference compared to my old dinosaur keyboard. I should have done this years ago. I just figured a keyboard was a keyboard. Now I'm going to try my hand at building a custom keyboard. I ordered the Zoom98 on a group buy and it isn't going to ship until January. Thanks for the video. Subscribed.
How did the Zoom98 build go?? I am in audio/video/lighting as an integrator, so I don’t build speakers but I do build designs for small production venues. I made similar comments on videos when I first started! My love for audio is one of the biggest reasons I enjoy keyboards.

@@arielmatiauda5110 Hi I have had the carbon fiber plate installed since I built it. I've been so happy with the keyboard I haven't changed it yet. I will play with that this winter. This was my first custom keyboard so I shotgunned all the accessories because I wasn't sure if I could get them in the future. I think I will try the brass plate next. Is there one in particular you are interested in? I can try it next if you want.
@@bradyvilhauer4445 Hi sorry for the late reply. The build went very well it's an excellent keyboard. But this is my first custom board. It's so much nicer than any keyboard I've ever used. I'm using Wuque Studios Morandi linear switches. And WS WOB PBS double shot keycaps. I bought all 5 plates and am using the carbon fiber one since I built the keyboard. I will try the others this winter. It's the smoothest, queit4est keyboard I've ever used but I learned to type on a Royal manual typewriter back in the day. The speakers I built are the 2TDX Criton tower speakers I built the cabinets myself from 3/4" redwood oak rather than the flat pack mdf. I also built a Elekit 300B tube amp to drive them. I'm very happy with the setup. Any thing you want to know about the keyboard?

Thank you for this video! Newbie to the hobby and plate choice has been giving me headaches because I want to join several different group buys yet I have no experience with anything but aluminium. Add to that the fear of not being able to get different plates afterwards, made me buy a lot more plates than I probably should have. Wish I had found this video two months earlier.
Also, for some reason, I absolutely hate that spacebar on the Aluminium plate. I don't know why. That specific sound just irks me to no end. Every other key sounds fine to me, just that spacebar on Aluminium. Guess I now know which plate to always avoid. :D

Hello, I love your content! I was wondering if you could make a video on the newly revised Gateron North Pole v2?
There's been alot of plate sound comparisons videos, but this video did it best. The immediate back to back sound comparisons make it more easily discernable between the sounds.
Often in other videos there is a span of time between sound comparisons and they all end up sounding almost the same. By immediately comparing sounds back to back you can more easily tell the difference.

in my opinion, a board that doesn't come with foam is a sign of confidence from the designer. And this board delivers! There's a fullness to it that sounds wonderful, my personal favorite being the POM plate.

Hi! Is it a very big difference in feeling between allu and steel? I already have the steel one in a Keychron V5 but I was doubting about getting a Allu or PC plate, not sure if having the steel one would make sense to get the allu. The keys I'm using are the gatheron milky yellow pro!
That CF plate is def the best for some reason the other ones sound a little hollow.

Some concerns about the young's modulus: brass is an alloy and different ratios will change it. Steel is a complex material and no two steels are the same and can vastly change the sound. Though, most of the more interesting steels you will not find as a keyboard plate

@@KP-by4eu it’s not pitches actually. The difference is in overtones and undertones. It’s the reason why you are able to tell a trombone made from brass from one made in plastic even though they are playing the same note. Each material creates different undertones that contribute to a sounds characteristic. Also a ear can tell minor differences at least a microtone apart, and the sound each of the materials create has a far greater difference than a microtone.
Plus there are foam less metal boards that sound amazing. Refer to unikorn and Kohaku.

POM, PolyCarb, then FR4 are my 3 favs in order. FR4 is old faithful of the bunch (adds nothing, but doesnt give "pingy" sonic additions)

If I wanted a keyboard that sounds creamy, which plate(s) would be the best for that sound profile?
Can you get an NK 87 Aluminum and work some magic on it. Anyway to make it flex? I think its one of the most difficult boards and anyway to get rid of some of the 20+ screws. Not sure its that many but I felt I wasted a lifetime with all its screws. You could also get EE and show what you would do with both.
Cf stiffer than aluminum? I put CF with FR4 usually.
I love these more informative videos! What about polypropylene plates? They should be less stiff and more thocky than PC plates, right? Never tried one myself though, just curious

Can someone help me find a 60% gasket mounted plate (Ideally POM)? I only want the plate as I have the other parts planned out, any format works. I cannot find any plates for sale on keychron, kinetic labs, kprepublic, or through general internet searches
I bought a POM plate for my keyboard that has pcb mounted screw in stabs. Love it and the sound.
Fur my sister's keyboard keychron k8, the stabs are clip on plate mounted. The plate stabs for spacebar were a challenge because the plate would flex compared to the original steel plate, cause the spacebar stabs bar to be uneven and jam.
Resolved it with a little Dremel work to better fit the clip in stabs.
Btw, i love the white POM as it really displays pcb underglow rgb amazingly well.
Damn, this board sounds super interesting & I do love how many plate options are offered. I do wish though that the board had a through-weight or external weight or something as I feel that those really also impact sound too. It does sound good, however, I can't find a reason to justify this board at the $275 USD price point. Nice video!

this is cool. would you do a stabilizers comparison video? there are so many options better than durock now
TX and Staebies are top tier, you can use Cherry clip-ins if you’re adept at tuning and modding and don’t want to spend too much. Otherwise, I hear owlstabs are decent, but I would just get TX personally.

@@Keybored that's interesting -- I bought those and stabbers, the new QMX, TX regular + TX long pole, and durocks, and some FR4 stab plates and GMK spacebars to test them all.

Is it bad that my first thought was: I wonder if I could fit a kilmat and tape in that case It's odd though... Pom plate is deeper than PC plate in every video I've seen, could it be the way the material resonates or the thickness of the pom plates produced? I noticed pom also has a rougher finish by nature than PC
I actually did this but when our power went out, I think the kilmat softened in the heat and ruined my keyboard, even though I had tried to add a protective layer between the PCB and kilmat. I'm not 100% sure about it, though. There was black gunk in places that was hard to clean, at least
I specifically picked a brass plate because I liked how thocky it sounded while also retaining that metallic sound. It's definitely not clacky haha.

Some hollowness adds some really nice character to the sound profile. I fully believe that there is the right amount of hollowness to complete the aesthetic of certain keyboards.
if you’re into the vintage keyboard hobby, a lot of their acoustics rely on the keyboard case itself.
a lot of people are starting catch onto this and i hope we start seeing a renaissance of vintage/retro keyboard case designs.

I wish there would be a TKL version, or even an exploded 75% layout for this.
Just want to point out that the values used for the carbon fiber plate in this case aren’t really accurate because most carbon fiber plates are coated in resin or something, not pure carbon fiber. Because of that, I expect most CF plates are probably deeper than you would expect from this breakdown
I just want to add, that keyboard sound so solid. It has little to no ping, yet it still sound full and not boring. Really interesting and simple board.

I’m a sucker for the science. Read appreciate that! I’m thinking an all Brass case with plate would sound great. But then again, a brass violin sounds very high pitched compared to a wooden one 😵💫 I guess I have to try it out myself to experience what a full brass keyboard sounds like.

So at the end the brass is shown to be more “thocky”? I thought the POM had a lower sound register. Thoughts?
honestly. for linear users ,pom and fr4 are more balanced . listen carefully to the space cap sound ,when alu ,the space cap sound is more bigger and out. that's a little inconsistent to me ,although sound is indeed solid and crispy .
fr4 maybe not exciting to many people, but deep and pure and consistent. for long-term experience ,for a linear user's requirement ,i think literally fr4 is the most balanced.
my dream build is definitely a pom plate with pc case.. hopefully there will be a pc version of HH60!
