These casts are spey cast and a snake roll cast which is supposed to anchor on the water. Yes, you can get more distance if you do an overhead cast, without touching the water.
It seems like the whole line falls on the water,before the forward drive. A lot of line stick to pull off the surface of the water, before the forward drive even begins, to lift into the cast.

Wouldn’t you get more distance if you kept the cast mostly off the water. Almost like a long distance roll cast? Timing is critical
