      Every time I open the coop I panic to see if anyone is dead. The amount of feathers is staggering. My poor ee frizzle has had no feathers in her neck for several months, not sure if that's just basic molt. But many of my girls are in full molt now.

      @@Kendaducote some chickens look like they will die but no soon enough they grow back out. I remember my aunt had to build a cage in her basement and it was just too cold for late moulting chickens. I am glad I am in Florida now, I don't worry about my birds freezing.

    😊 In the winter I give my flock heated oatmeal, stale homemade sourdough bread and homemade pancakes/waffles. Summer time I freeze garden harvests that aren’t that bad so they can have over winter too. I also buy fly larvae and mealworms over winter along with kitchen scraps.

    My poor baby girl...she is 17 months old...I thought she was sick. She was acting super off and was making me think at first she was goin bruddy(sp?) But she hadn't laid an egg for 13 days then she was just laying around where ever, barely eating and her poop size was like when she was just a week old. Well, 5 days ago she started losing her feathers (and squawking a lot) when I picked her up...in clumps of like 5 to 10 feathers! I freaked out but we are now getting through it as I did some research on the interwebs and realized that I am actually hurting her and stressing her out by picking her up and cuddling with her and even just touching her! She has about 10% of her original feathers left now and the rest of them are flying around the neighborhood(😂sorry neighbors, not sorry😂) Her pin feathers are coming out nice and she is enjoying being picked up a little bit more now...she is back to eating and pooping full sized poops again and likes being held again! 🎉🎉🎉

No, my chickens don’t need it, but it makes me keep their combs from frost bite.

    Another good way to help your chickens when they're molting is by feeding them all sorts of weeds. Almost all "weeds" are full of nutrients, immune boosting compounds and more. You don't have to buy anything if you don't want to! For example dandelion and pigweed are high in amino acids (compounds that MAKE protein), antioxidants, calcium, vitamin C (more than in 3 oranges mind you) and more! Happy weeding / chicken feeding! :)❤

    • @rainbowconnected
      @rainbowconnected หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      "Weeds" are amazing for chickens! Mine adore chickweed (shock), lamb's quarters, plantain, violets, dandelions and so many more. Nettles (dried, so they don't sting) are a huge hit and incredibly nutritious and full of protein. I mix the dried nettle into their soaked food and also make them herbal tea with nettles in them. They love both.

    • @SequoiaRaven
      @SequoiaRaven หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rainbowconnected Love it! My chickens, ducks and turkeys absolutely love stinging nettle too! Although they eat it fresh lol 😆. I like your use of quotation, I don't think there are actually weeds... they're just all medicine! Here in Canada we call Lamb's quarters pigweed but I hear that in the East part of the USA it's called fathen and for good reason they love it ( although I don't think they'd get fat off of it)! Thanks for the story! :) 😀

    Our Sapphire Gems quit laying over winter and never really started back up. From my seven SGs I get at most 2 eggs daily from them. It's mid-summer now... I finally see that they are molting. So hopefully after they finish molting we will get eggs from them again. We feed a high protein diet (20+% protein daily). I really didn't expect to see a severe lack of eggs from my girls - ever - even during molt because of feeding high protein. I guess we will start experimenting with feeding lower protein and back to higher to see if it affects their egg production (post-molt). We're struggling so badly with finances right now, and we may have to sell or give away (or eat) half or more of our flock(s) unless egg production ramps back up so that we can sell eggs again.

    Random question.
    Do you have any advice on getting my shy Millie Roo to get out of the chicken coop. He gets picked on by this one hen I’m pretty sure and he will get pecked at then he flys up and won’t get out of the coop till I go out and push him out. Should I cage the bully at night? Or cage the bully for two weeks?
    I don’t have a large areas for one chicken to roam and the chicken doesn’t really mess with him to much in their run but it is making that roo skeptical to leave the coop so idk what to do.

    When I was watching your video I couldn't help noticing Walter the duck and what caught my attention about Walter is (his)? Vocalizations, I've had chickens ducks geese turkeys all kinds of animals most of my life, so I think Walter might actually be female and maybe the only reason you have not got any eggs from Walter is because they require a mate and a pond or swimming pool kiddie pool something in order to breed properly, but I think you can Google it on the duck sounds of a female and male Pekin ducks. So if I am right you will be able to have some ducks too if that is what you wanted some people like hatching out their own chicks and ducklings and stuff like that..( I also subscribed to your channel, great info and ideas.

    Take all the products out before putting the chicken in the shower! We've had to wash a poopy/muddy hen and it can go either way. The warm water works to calm, but getting there, and transitioning to a towel and a blow dryer can be difficult to pull off smoothly.

    Hello, I have noticed recently at roost time my flock being extra loud, pecking each other, pushing each other off roost.
    Coop is 13×10
    6 roost bars
    2- 12ft
    3- 10ft
    1- 5ft
    I use hemp bedding deep litter method.
    I haven't seen mites/lices.
    I have 33 birds in this coop 3 rooster 29 hens.
    I do have several girls molting. Is this the reason for their aggressive behavior?
    They do not act this way during the day.
    2 of the hens have gotten so upset they've moved to youngster flock in my other coop.
    Anyway is there anything I can do? Or do I just have to wait out these sassy grumpy birds?¿???
    Any advice is appreciated. ❤❤❤❤

    One thing that so many people don't understand is that animals in the wild are hardy and resilient because the vast majority of the ones born die. The modern chickens may be less resilient, but part of that is because we don't just let the weak ones die. So yes, you can let your weaker chickens die during a hard molt or die during a cold winter. Or you can be a good steward of the animals in your care and give them what they need to thrive.
    Nature is cruel. We don't have to be.
