- For most of my time in the fandom I took Spike's unrequited love arc with Rarity the same as everyone else. I think most people rooted for Spike, hoped that they could finally win Rarity over. But as I've gotten older, it became evident to me through rewatching the show and talking about it with my friends how the whole Spike and Rarity thing is kinda creepy. Rarity continually led the kid on, despite being much older. And even when Spike started to move on, Rarity started getting jealous.
Spike has also been the butt of every joke. They've been the one to carry everyone else's baggage and tasks for pretty much the entire show. They've often been pressured to fit in, especially due to their lack of conformity to normal dragon societal standards.
I wrote Nonexistent Meet-Cute from the perspective of an adult Spike. In their independence and growth, they explore their identity and purpose, coming to realize that they've built up a lifetime of depression and cynicism. In a sudden act of defiance and anxiety, Spike confronts Rarity and tells her every little thought in their head.
Or perhaps it's just Spike daydreaming about doing it.

This song feels like someone screaming, "DID Y'ALL FORGET IT WAS SPIKE WHO SAVED THE CRYSTAL EMPIRE FROM KING SOMBRA _AND_ USHERED IN PEACE BETWEEN PONIES AND CHANGELINGS???" into a mic, condensed into 4 minutes. And it is good.
Spike changed the course of the show. Not to mention he helped bridge the gap between Ponies and Dragons. He befriended a Changeling who then became the new ruler and the new Dragon Lord. And all he gets is the Ambassador of Friendship? He deserves so much more.
Can't believe that spike's friendship with thorax and Ember aren't addressed that much, l mean if spike never made friends with them, equestria would have either been burnt to the ground by dragons or taken over by chrisalys, spike being friends with them caused peace between equestria and two kingdoms, who mind you, never got along with ponies until now, all thanks to spike! And their friendship with them is never brought up again like WTH?
These are all great examples of why spike is best drago. But I think that ambassador of friendship is just the right job for him BECAUSE of his friendships. He’s the one on the front lines for uniting the whole planet that Equestria is on. Creatures we’ve never even seen can be befriended because of his intuition and judge of character

Almost every mentor Spike had in the show led them on or exploited them. Hell Spike was so dehumanized as a character they become a pet dog in EqG.

@@ummdustry5718 I think saying Twi treats spike like a servant is pretty disingenuous though. They write her letters and do some chores around the house (because they live there and help out.) and they treat each other as siblings for the most part especially past season 3. Framing it like Twi is using spike when she goes out of her way most times past to lighten their burden and almost always asks if their ok is casting their relationship in the worst possible light. I think Spike deserves better from all the main cast, including Twi definitely, but she is pretty low of the list imo. I'd love to hear your take on it though I admit it's been a bit since i've watched the show.
Spike was the embodiment of the capital producing individual.
Spike was also a very good dog. Always in control of his animal urges. Sometimes the Fire of Friendship needs something to Burn For.
I think Fluttershy is the only character who actively interacted with Spike and treated him with actual kindness, but even then she treated them like a lost puppy not a dragon worth respecting.
Good for Spike. They always deserved better and I always hated how everyone treated them.

@@VyletPony I think there are times when turning the other cheek isn't a bad thing. But too often they did it out of fear that he would lose out or be wrong. Which was detrimental and even tragic. :c
@Vylet Pony Especially the one episode when Spike grew huge, destroyed part of the town and definitely hurt some ponies. Ground Spike, Twilight! Put Spike in time-out! Do SOMETHING!
And Rarity should’ve just told Spike no instead of leading Spike on for 9 seasons! Sure Spike would feel down for about week, but Spike would get over it, better than 9 seasons worth of trauma.

I feel like it would be way better if Rarity realized how she treated spike was wrong and said something like "Im sorry for the way Ive treated you all these years" and like tried to have a restart and mend their friendship and be a better friend to Spike but noPe

Spike deserved someone who would cut him loose if they didn't want him. One of the hardest things I ever had to learn how to do was cut *myself* loose. I say, "I have enough friends and I can't only be your friend."
I LOT can be said here, but something of note I like is the line...
"I've been chasing visions of a home I never had."
It's easy when you're in a dark, lost or confused time to confuse acceptance for romantic interest. It works with Spike being an outcast in the cast, or with the nonbinary head-cannon. Their crush for Rarity could've gotten melded with the idea of being appreciated for who they are. It's only when they grew up and matured did they find other means of validation, and saw through the ways she used them.

Everyone treats Spike as a baby, but he isn’t actually that young. Considering he was born when the mane six were fillies and that they were adults in the actual show, he should be at least a teenager.
He's a "baby dragon" but was raised essentially as a sibling to Twilight, so shouldn't be much younger than her.
i assume that dragons age and mature much slower than ponies because at the end of the show spike looks like he's arnd 20 to 30 when all the ponies are already old and twi's already a fully developed alicorn

I think it's because spike is a different species and dragons most likely live a lot longer then ponies so if you compared him to another dragon he would probably be a baby
Dragons continually live over a thousand years easily. A nap is 100 years for them. They do not age like ponies.

i always felt rarity was kinda scummy for leading spike on for years and then having the nerve to get jealous after they lost interest in her. like i thought she was supposed to be the element of generosity :/
If she took Spike's attention as admiration of herself(especially given the lack of admiration she gets from the locations she opens up), it probably did become something nice to have and a potential motivator to continue her work

And is anyone gonna talk about how Spike is basically a slave? Being forced to do so much menial tasks and labor yet never got recognized for it.
They do sort of retcon it later that Spike is Twilight's brother and not her slave, but the line was always pretty ambiguous.

There's a lot about the show to like, but the dynamic between Spike and Rarity was... Not Good tbh. All honesty, the longer the show went, the more relieved I was that it didn't go anywhere. Real talk, you're right. Spike deserved better. Spike got... a few good episodes and aw, but they took the brunt of the slapstick, got so little respect, and the writers just... seemed to forget about Spike at best sometimes.
Also, I'm going to try and convince the DJ at the dance party at this con I'm at to play this.

I always felt so bad for spike as I rewatched the series over and over. He really doesn't get much recognition for the amount of shit he puts up with. Wish the show made an episode just for him with everyone just appreciating all the work he's done, would've made for a good little recovery

i just got out of a toxic relationship, said girl pressured me into doing gross stuff and would treat me like shit in public, and anytime i voiced complaints she made it into an argument and id end up apologizing while she gets away with what i was “complaining” about. this song really helped cope from that toxic relationship especially made me realize she treated me bad and i’ve come to terms that i hate her guts for what she did…but hope she learns for the better.

I think it's good the showrunners didn't pair them up but yeah, the episode where Spike mutates into a huge dragon and wrecks shit where she... technically rebuffs him I guess but also not + the one where Rarity gets weird and clingy in season9 when he's not as fixated on her anymore felt weird to me to the point I wonder if that first episode had that mlp animator that got arrested. Granted I'm not big on Wreck it Ralph 2 for vaguely similar reasons, "adults being emotionally needy/clingy to their generation-gap friendships" weirds me out, let 'em be kids and don't lean on them.
I thought I was the only one who got those weird vibes from Ralph. Sure kids and adults can be friends, but there's a limit between a friendship and an emotional weight put from an adult to a kid

@@rockhistoria2537 Yeah, there's a snopes article about it somewhere. So not a voice actor or character designer(+no knowledge of which scenes they worked on so in that sense nothing nostalgic is soured) but it still sucks.
I never understood how so many people ever believed that Sparity was a thing that could or should happen. It was always obviously creepy. I was always waiting for the day Spike would wake up and move on (because I never believed that Rarity would have the integrity to do anything about a crush she could exploit instead).

Spike was the shows buttmonkey, it was always his place to be undervalued and overworked. How could someone not sympathize with him and demand the best for his sake? Beautifully cathartic, I love how you reimagine these characters from a different perspective and state of mind. Bravo ^^
this song is extremely cathartic to sing after a really traumatic breakup. it's been a while but it still hurts sometimes, but singing this room at the top of my lungs, pouring my heart and feelings into it like i did them, really helps. thank you for such an amazing song

god its so refreshing to see some care for spike in this fandom abs strong people who see the absolute shit he got put through for 9 full seasons. they've always been a favorite character of mine and this portrayal is so honestly accurate of how they would grow up always being told they're not a point but they're not a dragon, never being told WHAT they are, just that it's okay that they "aren't." all while being ridiculed and joked about and ignored on top of it all. they'd have to get fed up at some point and this is an incredible build up you've given us, so thank you!!!💜💚

Spike saved the entire Crystal Empire AND brought ponies and changlings together! Not to mention that way Rarity treats them is not only pretty crappy but also kinda creepy, in the show it has it like everyone is an older teen or adult and Spike is like the little kid "brother" which its normal for a like 13 year old to have a crush on an older celebrity or person but its another thing when said older person encourages it. She's not only teaching someone younger than her that the whole "they're playing hard to get, just try harder!/ if they hits you it means they likes you!" Thing is healthy and okay, but she's also being possessive and having unhealthy boundaries with someone younger than her.
I love to listen to this and imagine that Spike realized how horrible Rarity treated them while discovering their identity and that they get to move on and find someone who truly loves them or get awesome friends that support them!
I feel like I'm one of the few who actually appreciates the little guy. Bro held on for so long despite being slapped around like a rag-doll. Tho I always liked the idea of the ship (until someone had to directly point out to me it's a minor/adult relationship, yes I'm that dumb), Rarity could've easily said no, since she would obviously know the relationship wouldn't work. Poor dragon boi spent 9 seasons thinking something would happen, and it makes me feel bad for him bro 😢. I suppose the writers wouldn't really think of something like that tho.
Man, I love this as someone who from the very beginning of the show wasn't a fan of spike and rarity's relationship. At least, at least from what I remember, as the show went on longer it stopped being as common of a theme

Amazing video. I agree with how creepy Rarity and Spike's "relationship" was. They were one of my favorite characters, and I felt that they deserved better than how they were treated.
yeah, honestly after rewatching some older mlp episodes I realized how he was always taken for granted and never really got thanked for everything he has ever done. It sucks and honestly I love him more as a character now, he is underrated and underappreciated too

I've actually felt this way about spike since the first EqG movie. I always wondered why he came through the portal as a dog. It didn't really make any sense.
I was hopeful in Simple Ways from season four that maybe the writers were gonna help spike out. Rarity was all sad that Trenderhoof wasn't interested in her, and all Spike gave her was some light shade. But then the writers would always crap on Spike when the episode centered around them. It bugged me to no end. It's possibly one of the subconscious reasons I have for not watching season 9 yet.

But seriously, I just think it’s just so fucking sad of how Spike gets treated sometimes, legit it’s just sad. It’s like everytime there’s a Spike-centered episode, they have him get hurt, humiliated, or act out of character.
I will admit seasons 4 and 6 were his best, but aside from those two, it’s just disappointing how they can’t really write him as the humility-filled dragon he is.
I’m glad most of us here are in agreement of how Spike deserved better. I just feel so bad for him sometimes. Poor, Spike.

This is, maybe, my favorite song of yours. It just PUNCHES. It SNAPS and it BANGS. Start to finish, this is just fantastic. I kinda always hated spike as a character, but now I feel for him. But yeah, Rarity was a bitch to just lead him along without cutting him loose. She knew he was obsessed with her but she never considered doing the nice thing and just saying "Fuck no, Spike. You and me and are never gonna happen. We are only ever going to be friends. I like you as a friend and I want to continue to be your friend, but only if you are comfortable with knowing you will only ever be my friend."

Spike (mostly the way he's treated but also his personality) was always painful to watch... it felt weird seeing the characters treat him so poorly. I get that it's not exactly out of character when you consider they were also weirdly xenophobic toward Zecora, but that didn't make it not suck.
i feel bad for spike, he is constantly getting used for carrying bags for rarity and it seems like she is taking advantage of him all the time

I love all of this, this is awesome! The only problem i have with it at all is the mixing feels a little off, though my headphones may be at fault for the subdued vocals and highs, but overall wonderful track, and the subject matter is quite a personal thing for me having gone through a very similar thing to spike
yeah this song was hard to mix 😩 wall of sound + fast vocals is something i still need to learn more about how to engineer properly. it's something ill work on more in the future >;3

I love this so much ! I always felt Spike was so unreasonably hated by the fandom, and even shittily treated in the actual show’s universe , for what ? They’re literally a baby why is everyone so mean : ( I always thought they were a cute , charming addition to the shows cast. I will say, (and this might be biased as Rarity is my fav of the mane 6) I never got the impression she was intentionally leading Spike on, in fact imo for most of the series it seems she’s completely oblivious of Spike’s feelings for her, I do acknowledge there are like maybe 1 or 2 rare instances and jokes I can remember that might indicate it, but in the larger scope of the show I never felt she even knew they liked her, then again I stopped watching the series for a long ass time around season 5 , I think until recently , and alotta people say she got jealous of spike moving on later which I guess I wasn’t around to see, and if so, that’s …weird of her. I do agree that Spike x Rarity would be really weird , as even if Spike gets older, Rarity has known them since they were a baby, kinda gross. They should have had her just gently reject them , like Wendy did with Dipper in Gravity Falls. I mostly just think she uses them like everyone else, unfortunately. I still really appreciate this take on both their characters as it can teach a message and speak to a lot of people. More love for Spike !! 💛🤍💜🖤💚

Initially, I was hesitant to check out this song because I always hated the existence of spike x rarity, but the description gave a lot of context. I remember there was like a panel at bronycon in like 2011 where someone asked the one of writers if spike x rarity was going to happen and they basically said no, because he's a kid. I guess that writer didn't work on "Dragon Dropped." Anyways, I love this perspective on spike and rarity's relationship. Also nonbinary spike is awesome.
