- Elon Musk has warned that AI and in particular a digital superintelligent AI might render humanity extinct. We should therefore proceed very carefully in the development of AI systems. One of the solutions for the AI control problem proposed by Elon Musk, is the integration of AI with the human brain through a brain-computer interface. That is one of the reasons why he founded Neuralink, a company focused on the development of implantable brain-machine interfaces. This technology involves a module placed outside the head that wirelessly receives information from thin flexible electrode threads embedded in the brain. The threads will be embedded by a robotic apparatus, with the intention to avoid damaging blood vessels. He has claimed that in principle Nauralink's BMI will be able to fix anything that's wrong with the brain. Musk also hopes future iteration of the Neuralink device will offer symbiosis with artificial intelligence. That way we could merge with machines and hopefully avoid a possible digital apocalypse.
Neuralink's BMI technology might be able to overcome the biological limits of our minds and could even expand our intelligence.
The symbiosis between AI and humans, may greatly benefit our species. It may also help humanity to expand out into space. In spite of these possibilities. Musk said that he sees the creation of digital superintelligences as a great risk to the existence of humanity, but he also thinks that we must nevertheless pursue its development.
This is the first part of a 3 part series about the potential of Elon Musk's Neuralink which may offer us symbiosis with AI.

I think this will create a major problem for us personally...
Yea because governments have long history of killing and enslaving people. While millionaires have a long history of moving the world forward. If youre still confused you probably trust government and dont trust millionaires but most likely you got this idea from a political party.
It is mind boggling that the idea of obtaining new levels of consciousness is possible. Having the ability to understand quantum theory or a deep understanding of all philosophers would be life changing. Possibly experiencing what it is like to be someone else in their shoes giving us unprecedented empathy and understanding. This will change the world.

It's difficult to understand what Neuralink is doing as a private company, it seems they're attempting to take neural interface technology to a consumer market. If so its applications would likely be niche. To anyone thinking that this will open the gate to superhuman intelligence, or higher levels of consciousness, or to a linking between imagination and memory (whatever that means) is sorely mislead.
I'd encourage anyone interested to read some review papers. If you care about these subjects it's good to be well informed of the reality. Leave room to question anyone's ambiguous statements, especially individuals like Musk who are never shy to waiver the details, who's also acquired quite an authority on a subject like AI, although seemingly granted largely by loyalists and laymen.
Neuroscience and artificial intelligence are a long way off from entertaining any of the fantasies Neuralink encourages. Understanding intelligence and the brain is hard, and progress is quite unpredictable. Any respectable scientist in these fields who's done their work would be modest in this respect.
Musk is an interesting man, and scientists/engineers don't often receive such a level of spotlit attention. At this rate however Musk looks like he's developed a bit of a cult following, which isn't great cause ideally in science you don't want people to blindly follow on every word you give them, that's really not useful. Whatever he's accomplished, it shouldn't overwrite anyone's sensibility to question him where appropriate.
Their website shows they have the very limited goal of interfacing. Besides that it is common knowledge that brain images (i.e. from dreams) can be recorded. This is now routinely done in research around the world, and was first accomplished in the 80'ies. It is not rocket science, it is just calculation with the aid of the kind of neural networks already available 40 years ago (but too expensive at the time to do anything with beyond proof of concept).
In a world where you're always given something different than what they're selling, it boggles my mind why even one person believes this has anything to do with what they're selling it as. Its lockstep. All pieces playing their part for a global social change into a contactless form of oppression.

Too cool. I used this in my sci-fi novel "Metamorph". To avoid an AI from simply disconnecting, the interface ensures that if the human it links to is incapacitated or severed from it, the AI must shut down. This makes it the AI's priority that its human kill switch remains alive and well.

I think with things like neuralink, we will be able to keep our bodies and improve mental health* (probably similar implants or wearables for the rest of the body) while allowing us to freely send thoughts across the internet and control physical and virtual robots.
I mean this is the first version to be implanted into humans, it'll get more useful.

The question that comes to my mind is what is to prevent a super intelligence from using NeuralLink to take control of the people who have it installed? Rather than helping humanity to use AI more effectively, NeuralLink could be the super AI's means of taking complete control of humans. After all, the super AI will become vastly more intelligent than humans, and continue to expand it's intelligence at an exponential rate thereafter. Humans tethered to it via NeuralLink may wind up simply becoming apparatus that the super AI controls for its own purposes. Perhaps to learn more intimately what makes humans tick, or simply to gain from them a resource that it would otherwise not have - human agents. Anyway, just a question that I'd like to hear Elon respond to. Curious what he would make of it.

This is amazing I'm going into a deep dive of data science and hopefully be able to be help with this creation. This will be the greatest evolution for humans. Unfortunately it will get a lot of push back especially from the religious groups which I understand but the world we live in today wasnt supposed to exist. We would all be burned at the stake for cell phones and technology or "magic" as it was called. As long as we work together to make this a seamless and perfect transition it will be fine. Change is scary but it's worth the benefits of aligning us as one species which we already are. It's up to us to make sure we do it correctly but not run away from it. Some of those on top will cause destruction when some on the bottom are the solution and should be known and reassigned. Understanding positive and negative and still finding balance while overcoming existences trials in a loving aspect. Knowing all stages of strength as well as suffering, having barely any material needs and still helping-caring about others while maintaining self calibration is the answer. You can never take away ones birthright, attempting so will be the end.
I'll say it once and I'll say it again. I really think if creating AI could be dangerous it shouldnt be done at all. (that's also making the assumption that it would be completely dangerous. What if we were surpised?) Of course theres no real way of knowing that so we have to address the possibilities now before making it. But I feel that in the case of supposing that AI is dangerous which he said that it was, we really do need to be looking into ways to create it that eliminates all potential dangers involved. The only way I can think of would be creating an altered version of it or a half version or it would have to be created with very strict limitations to what it can do to prevent it from becoming dangerous. Like creating AI that cant develop beyond a certain point, or it doesnt have the ability to reprogram itself, or whatever violent nerve is present it should he complete removed from its programming. That's what I think. It's either that or dont create it.
I also do get a little bit concerned about other points that have been made (assuming that such things can be done and AI turns into a success) it's important that we dont fall into the trap of getting lazy or overly complacent or having machinery operating our lives so strongly that we are no longer in control of our own lives or to have things keeping track of every little thing going on in your brain, because that can be a crossing the lines of personal privacy. And there are some things that are important that they remain your business and not everyone else's.
