I have tall grass which I tie up in the fall but this season I am going to cut back in the fall so I can dry the stalks and chip them in the spring for mulch in my vegetable garden. I used the chipper this past spring but because the stalks were still wet they did not chip as well as I had hoped, which meant I lost some to the compost. What do you do with the stalks of your grass plants?
@southerncomfort971 I hadn't thought about using them as mulch. That is a great idea, thanks! Putting them through a shredder after they dried is a good idea. I have always been afraid of the seed heads sprouting and becoming weeds in my garden, so I have always thrown them away. I could remove the seed heads and use the rest as mulch.
@@gardenwiseadventures Thank you for your feed back, I have not seen any more weeds that would normally grow in my garden but I am also looking for a source of straw rather than the store bought mulch to fill in bare spots in my garden.
I use my gas hedge trimmer. I like your idea of tying it up though. That would be a lot neater!

can I prune in mid summer? my ninebark has mildew and I would like clean it up.
You can thin it and open it up by removing some of the smaller branches to the base. Save the major pruning until its dormant.
