Thank you for this video. I bought a file for my garden tools and wasn't sure how to use it. Very good info here!🤗

I never have sharpened my tools and have left them in the rain many times. Only this is the first year I notice that they were dull. Thank you, sir, for all the information. I won't be neglecting my tools anymore. New Subscriber now.

What would be a good file to start with because They are DULL! they still cut through roots though... With a lot of effort I don't have...

Mill Bastard file 10 in or longer file. If the file is too short you will be doing a lot more work, more strokes.
Longer file one long stroke less work.

This was very, very helpful. I'll be digging some post holes in clay-like soil with a spade, so sharpening it (for the first time) will make the work much easier, I'm sure. In fact I just finished doing it while listening to your video. Thanks very much!

Another addition to files that is good, is before putting on the handle, out a piece of square our round leather, tough stuff, on the tang to make a guard like a sword. This avoids many accidents

I thought this was very informative since I had not sharpened several of these items before. Thank you.

Cool video. I am into making some of my own tools that fit me. I made a new age (I call it that) scythe and I use the term scythe liberally. It ergonomically fits my swing and it is clearly not a scythe traditionally. I used a cut off piece of steel from a larger 90 degree ruler I bought from Lowes. I am asking if I can use one of those QEP diamond grit (bits) hand-held porcelain sharpeners (tile sharpener to smooth out rough edges) on a tool that is basically metal, not carbide steel. I have seen videos of people using a stone but I cannot find one around here that is shaped like those to fit into my pocket as I work. I like the QEP shape (and it is just $20.00). By the way, yes, my home-made scythe works excellent when sharp, which is each time I use it. It clears out stuff so quickly and quietly. I use it primarily to keep the height of my rough stuff around the edge of my property at a decent height, but much taller than grasses. Really works great. ALSO, very soothing to the mind and good exercise. - JEREMY in SW Michigan (August 2023).

Unless it is a double cut file, they are intended to cut both back and forward stroke. Most are single cut for forward stroke only though.

Do you use the oil when using the file? Also what kind of file was that? Was it half round?

Do you think sharpening on the bottom side is better than topside?

It doesn't matter which side you sharpen. I would sharpen the side that already has a bevel.

Get yourself a flap disc and ditch the files. If I had a speedy sharp I would use it like in the sharpens best videos and I wouldn’t pull it towards me. It looks awkward the way speedy sharp says to use it and IMO is wrong. Sharpens best sharpener instructive videos are the correct way to use a carbide edge.
