That Regal Wagon was pretty nice. I'm not sure why people aren't interested in a car with extended cargo room but still drives like a car rather than a top-heavy SUV.
Obesity. That's the real answer that nobody wants to admit, but everyone knows. Bigger people need taller vehicles. The USA is also an aging population, which translates to more individuals with back issues also needing taller vehicles. So in short, old fat people have killed sedans and wagons in North America
I have a 2019 Regal GS. The decision to make it a Sportback while looking like a regular sedan was excellent. But beyond that, the Sportback design makes it unexpectedly utilitarian - the access to the trunk is massive, bigger than the wagon and with a lot more accessible cargo space. Plus it has a 3.6L V6 only offered in the GS and Avenir sedans. If they made a GS wagon it may have made a sales difference.

A few years ago when I was looking to replace my aging Chevy Malibu Maxx I was looked pretty hard for a decently priced CTS wagon. I needed a vehicle that sat low enough that I could get my late father who was partially disabled in and out of fairly easily. I also needed something with enough cargo space to haul his oversized collapsible wheelchair and be able to lift it in and out of fairly easily. Most SUVs sit up too high these days to fit those criteria. In the end, I got a good deal on a relatively low mileage Ford Flex as it fit both of the above criteria quite well! It's a shame that Ford no longer sells that vehicle as well!

Never heard of or saw a Diamante wagon, so learned something new :) 1 of the issues with the Magnum wagon was that you could get all that power, but couldn't tow with it. Also, it had all that cargo room, but had serious weight restrictions due to its independent rear suspension, with low height travel. It could be easily overloaded. My uncle had an 06 for a time, and with 4 people and all their luggage, that car had some serious rear squat.
You can tow with the magnum manual states up to 3800lbs with the R/T which gets you the load leveling rear nivomat shocks. Also never had an issue filling the back with bags of mulch, gravel, or sand. Sounds like your uncle had blown rear shocks and didn't want to fix them.

At 58, I'm not likely to see a return of the wagon body style in my driving days, but I like to think that eventually others will see the utility and attractiveness of these cars. I love wagons. I'm a car guy, and whether a friend is or isn't a car guy, he or she will know that I think wagons are amazing. My favourite car that I owned was a 2010 Golf Wagon TDI. I think they were sold as a Jetta Wagon in the US. My current car is a '24 Golf R, and as much as the R has been a favourite of mine for the past decade, I am still mad that VW never brought the R wagon here. A R wagon would be perfect for me. I've been a wagon person since I feel in love with the Nomad back when I was a kid. My daily driver is a 2007 Magnum & it is everything I could want in a car. They are great sleepers that people just don't see coming. Yeah, they're big & heavy and the good ones are fast as ship!
Glad to see the Buick Regal TourX wagon make #1....well, kinda! My wife and I have a 2018 TourX Essence, the top of the line model. It's a lovely car! With the 2.0 EcoTec pushing out 250HP and almost 300 Lb Ft of torque, it's no slouch. The Aisin 8-speed automatic is well behaved, even if it's programmed to shift early and not kick down unless you REALLY put the pedal to the firewall. The AWD system is awesome, with toque-vectoring, which is great for our dirt (and mud) roads where we live. Yeah, not much ground clearance, I agree. The handling is top-notch for what it is (it's not going to crank corners like my 2018 MINI Cooper S, LOL), but it handles WAY better than one would expect. I think it has like 76 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down, which is quite cavernous! "Reliable sources" say that total TourX wagons here in the US is about 9k over the 2018-2020 model years, and you really don't see many on the road. They are absolutely gorgeous wagons, in our opinion, and people often ask what it is....their guesses are Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc. They are shocked when they learn it's a Buick, or an Opel Insignia, actually. I just installed an ECM tune on ours, and that bumps the HP up about 50 and the torque (they say) like 60 Ft Lbs. It also remaps the transmission, which holds gears longer now and kicks down much easier. And it eliminates the stop/start feature, which in this car doesn't have a button to cancel it. This tune really makes the car quite the rocket, especially from 30MPH up. Great for passing on short dashed-yellow zones! The fuel mileage isn't bad for a big wagon, and we are getting 22 MPG here on out hilly, twisty 2-lane mountain roads, with maybe 20% being actual highway driving. My wife and I love this TourX, and I'd love to have another one to have a his and hers matched set! But they are pretty hard to find, and pricey with good options, low mileage and good condition. Some people were buying new 2018 models in 2019 as the dealers had them still, and paying as little as 28k for a car with a list of around 40k, since GM did a lackluster job of promoting them....at least in my opinion. Used 2020 models with all the options are still bringing a pretty hefty price on the used market, if you can find one! Anyway, great video! I find it kinda sad that the wagon doesn't have a market like it used to, pretty tired of seeing the same old boring look-alike SUV's out there!
For #10, Isuzu also sold a Wagonback version of the Impulse in the U.S. and Canada. Unlike the Storm Wagonback, the Impulse Wagonback came standard with the more powerful twin-cam 16-valve engine and was outfitted with the Lotus-tuned suspension the Storm didn't offer at all. I've only seen one up close recently, and it is quite the unicorn.
Possibly rarer still was the Asuna Sunfire version of the Impulse sold at Canadian Pontiac dealers. They were rare even when new...though the model name survived on Pontiac's J-body cars.
I have got so used to the automotive crimes against humanity that crowd the streets nowadays that I find each and every one of these to look absolutely majestic. What is in people's minds to prefer SUVs and crossovers to sedans, hatchbacks, wagons and coupes?
I ordered and took delivery of that Saturn SW2 pictured with 5 speed manual. A sporty little wagon that got tons a complements. Even from a Saturn mechanic.
Funny story (kinda), I got into prefering wagons over sedans and pretty much everything else from watching the Tremors 1, the scene where the wagon was pulled into the ground had an inside shot of the hatch. As a kid I thought "there's just so much more room in there"
The Dodge Magnum Wagon was a dang fine looking vehicle. I've only ever known one person that's owned one, and I could definitely say I'd have wanted one years ago. But It's simply one of many awesome vehicles that simply never got the chance to flourish, kind of like the Chevy SS models produced from 2014 to 2017. I'd love to have a Dodge Magnum Wagon today, but at this point it's a nearly 20 year old Chrysler product.
Great Video, But you left out my current vehicle, which I absolutely love, the 2010-2014 Acura TSX Wagon only 9000 were sold in the US during those years. In other parts of the world it's called the Honda Accord Tourer. Thanks for including the Buick Regal Tour X I really liked those too.
I adore that Geo Storm hatchback, what an awesome concept making a wagon out of a sport compact car. Shame this concept are no more and might never be again. I owned a CRX few years ago, still one of the most fun car i`ve ever had.
I love all of these! There's just one thing I want to say though, the Saab NG 9-3 is a 'true saab' because Saab did a lot of the work to develop that platform and engine that GM took all the credit for. They're great cars and I still see them everywhere for a reason
The Diamante VR4 wagon was super duper hot! Twin turbo AWD with a manual available! I was so close to getting a Magnum, but thankfully, I didn't have enough credit.
My dad went through 3 Crown Vic wagons and before that one Dodge Aspen wagon. Things were bulletproof. With 2 boys in hockey, I would love a full sized wagon that would fit all their gear. Instead I need an SUV or light truck.
93 ford escort wagon with a manual transmission is my favorite car ever owned. Practical, utilitarian, had only what you needed- power steering & a/c and had nothing you didn't like power windows etc.
There is a cult following of Dodge Magnum. There is a world wide Magnum car club called the Magnum Mafia. I had a 06' R/T and enjoyed it as a long trip car too drive.
Station wagons are everywhere today. A,B,C,D pillars. Folding rear seat. Extended storage area. Rear access. They are just called crossovers and SUVs. Just about everyone drives one.
My first car was a wagon - Not something that a teenager was looking to drive, but it came from a family member and it was free. It was a 1981 Pontiac Lemans Safari wagon (think midsize Malibu from the 80's but a wagon). I later began to appreciate that I could haul me and all of my friends when we went and did things. Wagons have always been part of my existence, I learned to drive on one (1979 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Estate), and would say that because of that I can Parallel park ANYTHING to this day. It's a shame that America has moved away from the wagon to these enormous SUVs that no soccer mom REALLY needs, and many people do not know how to navigate the roads with. I hope eventually there will be some American auto manufactures that once again embrace the wagon. I blame Chrysler and their Minivans for all of this. LOL
I owned 2 wagons. First was a Pinto 2 door stick shift. I loved that car. I could go the whole week on $10.00 of gas. 2nd was a Taurus wagon. I was given the car because the owner thought that the engine blew. I figured out the problem, and got it running for $10.00. Both cars i drove until they dropped dead. I miss them. I don't like trucks, vans, suv. Wagons and the ticket for me. Too bad they have gone away.
I drive a Roadmaster wagon and love it! When I tried to go look at a Regal wagon, 2 different dealerships told me that I could buy one and then they'd get it in. I couldn't even sit in one unless I bought it first. They had no interest in selling them.
I think the Regal wagon looks bad ass. Tint the windows in limo tint and add some sporty touches here and there. I was raised in the 80's and I miss seeing wagons everywhere. Thanks My Old Car
Just wanted to say that I appreciate the mention of the 78-79 Magum. My mom had a 78 when i was a little kid, and i got a 79 Magnum GT as my first car in 1999. Always wanted a Magnum wagon too, but by time I could afford one, I knew how crappy the interior quality was in those.
It seemed like every kid growing up through the 60's and 70's, their parents had a station wagon. I know we did. My mom and dad bought a new Chevy Kingswood back in 68 or 69. It was blue and had a black interior. We used to play in the back on road trips.
I know others might not get the reference, but I love that clip of Wagons East that you put at the end c: still one of my movies I need to pick up on laser disc
I'd say the Acura TSX Sport Wagon, Mazda 6 wagon and Jaguar XF Sportbrake would have also qualified for this list, as would the Peugeot 405 wagon, though that car's dismal sales were almost entirely down to the company's reputation and withdrawl from the U.S. market than it was U.S. consumers' attitude toward wagons.
Happily driving a 2010 Toyota Matrix (DOT classifies it as a Wagon) Have driven a 1990’s Chevy Caprice wagon, which was basically a tiny house on wheels ;)
Cars I owned in the mid 70s - '71 Impala, '72 Vega, '73 Caprice wagon, '73 GMC Sprint. Would love to see any of them featured. Every one, save for the POS Vega, were rock solid vehicles
My mother had a 1995 Ford Escort wagon. It was her 2nd one as I remembered. She had a 1980 one, too. The 2nd one that I did liked and even drove it,too. Both of my parents had SUVS during the 90’s and 2000’s. Even my mother did drove a 1989 Dodge Grand Caravan for a little bit over 4 years.
The Geo Storm Wagonback is very cool. 😍 Although more of a "breadvan style hatchback" rather than an estate or station wagon. Just like the 1981-1994 Volkswagen Polo hatchback.
Storm Wagonback got the non GSi Storm engine, but Japan got the 20 more HP version of the GSi engine, factory Recaro seats, and AWD in the Isuzu Gemini Irmscher-R.
An honourable mention could be given to the Nissan Pulsar NX Sportbak. It was a wagon conversion roof for the NX, you basically removed the rear hatch and slotted a wagon style rear roof and tailgate in its place.
I love every wagon featured here and have owned one of the rarest- a 2005 X-type Sportwagon. It had Jaguar luxury in spades, was reliable and an attention-getter. The only reason I sold it was being unable to find a shop to fix the gear whine in the transfer case, an occasional factory defect never properly addressed by a recall.
reminder Estates are NOT shooting breaks in europe, shooting breaks are essentially two door estates, in the past mostly based on coupes and a specialty build with a few exceptions.
I am loving the Custom Cruiser! God I turned into one of the "hats" (the old hat-spotting gentlemen drivers) we used to make fun when we were young and dumb.
I really wanted the TourX to succeed…Hats off to the people who bought them. I wasn’t in the car market at the time, but wouldn’t have wanted to pay for premium gas tbh.
Thank you. This was a great list. I liked some of the models featured(The Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser and Buick Regal Tour X and SAAB) and the information you stated. Holden( GM Australia) sold a version of the same wagon as Buick as well. I know Oldsmobile wanted more than just the wagon too. They wanted to place the Ninety Eight on that platform and GM said no. They only got the wagon. I know Pontiac did not get a version either. I do recall all the SAAB GM variants. They lost some of the SAAB ness indeed. the 9-7x was an Oldsmobile Bravada with SAAB cues. I liked the fact you showed the Chrysler 300 wagon sold outside the United States. The Honda CrossTour flopped. it was essentially a wagon.
I wish Subaru would bring the JDM Levorg over to the states. The only wagon we have left now is the Subaru Outback, which is sadly transformed into a Forester “light” with the spy shots of the next generation recently shown.
I should have bought a 93-97 Corolla wagon for pizza delivery. Available with a 5 speed manual and the wagon got the 1.8 engine vs the 1.6 in the sedan. A 93-97 Corolla wagon is very hard to find used right now.
SAAB - the 9³ sport combi came out in 2006. It was a few years after the NG sport sedan and 2 years after the NG convertible. Just over 9,000 Saab 9³ combi made it to the U.S and finding one with xwd is even rarer as they only made regular combi xwd from 09-11 and 9³x models from 2010-2011.
The 04-08 Acura TSX wagon was also a bit of a flop for the same reasons as the IS300 version. Also, the Honda Accord was available in wagon during the 90s.
Good report, but @13:28? Americans were given the "Estate Wagon" from Buick in the 70s and in 1977, both Buick and Chevrolet dropped the "Estate Wagon" (Buick), and both the "Townsman" and "Kingsman" (Chevrolet) names in favor of "Buick Electra Estate Wagon, "Buick LeSabre Estate Wagon," "Chevrolet Impala Estate Wagon" and Chevrolet Caprice Classic Estate Wagon." (respectfully) So Americans knew what "Estate" meant. But I think that most of us, however, would have had issues with "Shooting Brake," though. 🐰
My Uncle owned a Roadmaster in the 90s. Evn as a Kid i was impressed how huge they were. The Only downside that kept me away from them when i was at that Age to get one was the Fuelconsumption. Such Car with a efficent modern engine, maybe AWD/SUV Option ..i guess it would generate a few sales .. or more.
Mitsubishi Magna (Diamante) was very popular in Australia - mostly sedans, and a decent number of wagons. The volume selling models were honest but not luxurious. The factory in Adelaide has since closed down.

I love watching these videos on Sunday mornings. Starts the week off right... or ends the week right. However you wanna think about it.
My cousin had a CTS-V wagon. It. Was. A. BEAST!! A tire-shredding beast!
I had the Dodge Magnum. It was such a great car. Still miss it
Funny story (kinda), I got into prefering wagons over sedans and pretty much everything else from watching the Tremors 1, the scene where the wagon was pulled into the ground had an inside shot of the hatch.
I was so close to getting a Magnum, but thankfully, I didn't have enough credit.
never existed - you're thinking of the smaller Legnum VR-4 which was the wagon version of the Galant VR-4.
@te71se you're right. Thought they were built on the same chassis even though they technically are. It's on the top of my Christmas wish list
My dad went through 3 Crown Vic wagons and before that one Dodge Aspen wagon. Things were bulletproof. With 2 boys in hockey, I would love a full sized wagon that would fit all their gear. Instead I need an SUV or light truck.
The Geo reminds me greatly of the Volvo 480 coupé.
Very cool car that one was.
Greetings from the Netherlands
My thought exactly.
93 ford escort wagon with a manual transmission is my favorite car ever owned. Practical, utilitarian, had only what you needed- power steering & a/c and had nothing you didn't like power windows etc.
Lexus DID do another wagon after the IS sport back. Although some may argue that the Lexus CT 200 is a hatchback, I consider it a small wagon.
Cadillac built 1767 CTS-V wagons, 514 of them with a manual transmission.
14mpg city, 19mpg highway.
I loved my 05 Magnum with the 5.7 Hemi! I put over 100k trouble-free miles on it.
There is a cult following of Dodge Magnum. There is a world wide Magnum car club called the Magnum Mafia. I had a 06' R/T and enjoyed it as a long trip car too drive.
I love staton wagons (Chevy Caprice wagon and Ford Torino wagon just to name a few) spacious, and still easy to work on.
Station wagons are everywhere today. A,B,C,D pillars. Folding rear seat. Extended storage area. Rear access. They are just called crossovers and SUVs. Just about everyone drives one.
Great video on US modern wagons by the way!
LOL
If misubishi just made another division named diamanté they probably wouldve gotten a hold for Japanese luxury. Rip wagons tho
I wish they made wagons now. More versatile than some of the tiny crossovers we have now. 😊
Subaru outback !
@@bextar6365- Audi has entered the Chat. #allroad
@@bextar6365 Crossoverized, so, not really.
@@bextar6365 Is not a wagon.
Bro my 99 Matiz is more versatile than mini-SUVs.
I've never owned a Magnum, but I've wanted to. I wish that they would have kept it in the line up with the Charger and 300.
Happily driving a 2010 Toyota Matrix (DOT classifies it as a Wagon)
Have driven a 1990’s Chevy Caprice wagon, which was basically a tiny house on wheels ;)
🥰 CTS-V!! Hard to find any kind of a wagon these days unless it’s a Subaru
Cadillac wagon pretty good looking
i like the old Cadillac cts with his sharp edges. But here in Germany dealers are extremely hard to find so i went for a Mondeo instead...
I love wagons. If I could buy an electric one, I wouldn't own the low crossover I do now.
reminder Estates are NOT shooting breaks in europe, shooting breaks are essentially two door estates, in the past mostly based on coupes and a specialty build with a few exceptions.
Chill 😂

Wow, that first year Geo Storm wagon looks so good, I am gonna have to track one of those down some day.
I am loving the Custom Cruiser! God I turned into one of the "hats" (the old hat-spotting gentlemen drivers) we used to make fun when we were young and dumb.
Kinda surprised there was no mention of the Accord wagon nor the later Acura TSX wagon
I went to buy a 2019 Buick Regal Tourx, had the dealership not tried to hose me over the price I would have bought it, I really liked it.
Just got a salvaged tour x! Great vehicle once I get it fixed
Honda accord for successful wagons?
I test drove a 9³ Kombi once and enjoyed it, though the cargo area was a bit small for my use. Still keeping my eye out for just the right 9⁵ wagon.
In europe, there was another Cadillac-wagon, called the BLS, based on the Saab 9-3
The Lexus lS300 was a beautiful and fun car .especially with a manual . And one of the best designed dash layout like a wristwatch
I saw the entire United States from the been back of a Vista Cruiser and later from the been of a Buick Estate Wagon. I miss wood panel stickers.
RIP Saab. I miss my 9-3 non wagon. Great cars that GM destroyed.. ☹
My great aunt drove a 2007 Jaguar X-Type Sportwagon for a few years.
