We have hilly terrain like that here in va. My brother got his first doe of 2020 today with our urban archery season in town. First time I’ve ever been jealous of someone living in town lol.
Thing about air is it's a bit different than water. Hot air is less dense because it expands (molecules moving faster). Things that are less dense expand in all directions which causes it to rise since it can't push the earth out of the way. It's like balloons all over the place and the hottest ones get expanded the most. When they reach another balloon that's just as dense they stop expanding. In this case there is no container so they mix (convection). As they mix they cool and shrink which looks like your falling fog. Your fog example is a great one. I don't know why so many people think thermals are like a stream that flows in one direction. They're more like waves.
Grant I'm in Kentucky. I recently had a trail camera picture of a buck that I had seen quite a bit last year during daylight hours however this year he seems to be a bit more nocturnal. Do bucks tend to get more nocturnal the more mature they get or is it just a personality of each individual deer? Also do you ever get more aggressive trying to find where that buck may be bedding to get closer to him? I say nocturnal but he's shown up at 5 a.m. once and 11 P.m. to 1 a.m. the other time. Extremely random.
brian ross I got pictures of him last year at the beginning of the year and then not again until very end of season. There are so many things that affect where they move and what they do it's hard to tell.
Bradley - deer are individuals like humans. There are patterns, but few absolute rules to when deer are active. Deer often shift to using a different part of their home range this time of year.
Hey man do know if you leave your scent in a specific area will the shift in time of the day make that scent travel up or down even though you are not physically there anymore? for example if I'm hunting downhill in the cold early morning and leave the area by 10 am or so will the scent that I left downhill now flow uphill as the day gets hotter around noon?
David - Fargo ND is a great area! Thermals are temperature driven so if clouds delay the sun's energy from warming the soil/air thermals will move to lower elevation (toward the river in your case) much longer.
Colby Jenkins normally deer trails are positioned for the wind direction in ur area so set ur stand down wind 🌬 of the main tail u expect the deer 🦌 to travel 🧭 in Oct when bucks are making scrapes this is much easier if u want to kill a buck use ur trail cameras to see which are the heaviest trails being used during day light n go from there also if ur hunting private land u can use blockades like brush or fencing to narrow down a pinch 🤏🏾 point like funneling deer or forcing deer to use only one trail then set ur stand or ground blind down wind of the trail hopefully these tips can get u thinking 🤔 in the right direction
Colby Jenkins u didn’t say if u hunt public or private and get u some milk weed the last 30 min in the evenings when it’s calm I use milk weed to see which direction the thermos are pulling my scent u will be surprised what the milk weed will show u watch it travel on the thermos that last 30 min when the sun is setting kill a big buck this season we had a nice one get away last night here in North Dakota would have been my sons first buck with a bow
Colby - David is correct - it's better to adjust where you hunt then try to force the deer to move in a certain way. If there's too much disturbance deer will likely shift to using another portion of their home range.
As an avid paraglider, great job explaining thermals.
Thanks!
Best video I’ve seen explaining this, the fog images & hot air balloon analogy really help, thanks for finally closing the door or this question!
Thanks Scott and you are welcome!

What county are you from?
Congratulations to your brother! Fresh venison!!

Means he's living somewhere else now

There are many variables but I assume that's possible but not a big concern. You are wise to leave before the thermals change!
Hey Grant Does cloud ☁️ cover effect thermals I hunt river bottoms in flat land Fargo ND had this ? on my mind for a while thanks 😊

is there a way i can stop deer from coming downwind of me?

David Tisch thanks i’ll try this and let you know if it helped!

Good knowledge but I just don’t see the sport in shooting a buck out of a tree house, with a rifle, over a food plot..
I'm not sure why I dislike the name The Proving Grounds so much.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. I like the name as it fits our rocky and steep place.
Its a personal place to try different things to see if it will work. Plots, techniques, management, etc.
