I have a new Amphibia now, the 720 888, I really like that design. I changed the bezel for the 720 steel with the lume triangle. I also replaced the bracelet for a lighter Milanese mesh type. The weight is now 94 g. I'm now really happy with this combination. The old one from 1985, similar to 420 831 still doing great.

Several important pluses with a Vostok over other low to moderate priced watches. They are easy to regulate to near COSC standards, easy to mod with straps, bezels, even hands & dials, & easy to buff out scratches on the acrylic crystals with polywatch or toothpaste.

That dress watch is just heartwarming. Something about it. Now the scuba dude one, I think it's not the 710 case, and the bezel is their sort of aftermarket ones hence that's why it came in at $73, but would be much cheaper than that if you got it on the regular steel bezel. Bracelet seems to have changed for the better too

Hi Dave. I've gotta have that dress watch. My nephew gave me a Komandirskie, at which point I'd never heard of them, I then bought an Amphibia, then thanks to Jody, a GMT which is made of steel. Now if Teddy Baldasarre, a good guy and a recent convert, loves them, then you definitely will. Plus they mod easily, even for people like me. 🙇‍♂️🙏👍

Personally, I wish you'd picked up a 710 for your scuba dude, but you did fine and that's a seriously good watch you got that will last a very long time. Dave, do some online research: Read up on the history of these watches, how and why they're designed with everything they've got (which is a snapshot from 1967) and you'll be even more impressed with what you have there.

I like the dress watch! It looks really classy. First time to see a watch with a crown at 2. Gorgeous lugs too! It's tempting to pick one up. I like that it has no date (because the Amphibia has no QS date, which is a headache for me). For me, the deal breaker is the alloy case. The bracelet on your Amphibia looks way better than the one I initially got. The Komandirskie box reminds me of chocolates.

I own the Vostok 581826 which features a black dial with reflective gold numerals. It’s so elegant I can’t stop looking at it whenever it’s on my wrist. That contrast between bright gold and black really makes the dial’s features eye-catching. Don’t forget the unique crown at 2 o’clock. If you put the watch close to your ear, you cam hear a faint ticking sound that’s quite mesmerising. My dad caught me sitting on the sofa with my Vostok to my ear and was like, “wth are you doing”.
And all this for a 130 SGD (I’m Singaporean) seems like a steal! The fact that this watch is so underrated makes me love it even more.

Thank you! Vostok - is the best! Respect from Russia! Many interesting technical solutions are used in this watch (if you are interested, see my review in Russian). Sometimes the quality is not the best. But it mostly refers to the build quality. For example, before using in water, it is sometimes necessary to check that the back cover is fully screwed on. At this price, there is no other fully manufactured watch with its glorious history and original designs!

  • @paradox_1729
    @paradox_1729 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Lol, "wobbly crown" is part of the design that protects the crown. The lucite/acrylic crystal uses some very interesting engineering principles to achieve a dynamic seal, read up on it, its an engineer's solution from first principles, not something a watch maker would have thought up. The scratches are also super easy to fix because of this. The bezel insert on your amphibia scuba dude is actually ceramic not acrylic.

New camera or lighting? Haircut maybe? New razor blade? Something is going on you look sharp brother!
I'm only 40 seconds in quietly hoping one of the three might be a GMT...

The Komandirskie is from the new line with titan oxicarbonitride case coating. Unfortunately they only use this coating for the cheaper line at the moment.

Whatever the stated water resistance is, the komandirskie is absolutely fine for swimming as long as the case back and crown are screwed properly. It may have only 1/3rd of the water resistance of the amphibia, but considering that one is fine beyond 600m in pressure tests, it really isn't an issue

Another important plus for an enthusiast the Vostoks are obsessively in house. And they wet test all their waterproof watches before they ship.

used to own a Komandirskie "before Vostok was cool" but scaled down the watch collection & parted ways with it ... with all the new love Vostok is getting lately, decided to order a Scuba Dude model - and one of your shirts to go with it! на здоровье

My friend I saw in the minute 9:39 how lose are your bezel. My suggestion is that make it more tight. The easy way for me is buy some wire spring for Vostok. I bough 10 for 7 dollars on Ebay. All these spring is coming with the maximums length and we need to cut it according with our necessities. To cut these I use a toenail clipper, but you can use what you have.. Then I remove the sprinklers of the cut with a find sandpaper . Remember to cut only small portion and you test and test.

I considered myself as a Vostok fan (6 or 7 pieces on the drawer) but I think I was too focused on Amphibias and Komandirskis😬 That dress watch is beautiful! Thanks Dave I think I need to buy one😉

I just had a look at the Vostok Buyalov "Airship Italia". This is what you get:
    - beautiful handwound calibre 43 mm
    - bg9 superluminova
    - coated sapphire
    - bronze case
    - transparent case back
    - very legible dial with small second
    - great looking leather strap with bronze buckle
    Price $ 240
    I really like that one

Hi Dave, at 10:12 you mention the bidirectional winding on the Amphibia; I have a vintage watch from my great-grandfather that does the same thing. I've been told that winding the crown counterclockwise actually unwinds the watch, so that might be what you were hearing there. It's actually recommended for older vintage watches to take some pressure off the mainspring.

I have had 5 Vostocks... Amazing!!
Actually I highly recommend the Retro 505 or 405 ; for about $ 115 you will have a great looking watch with a lot of inside. The best? its accuracy is within 3 seconds / day. I have not had that with a German Made or Swiss Made having a ETA 2824-2 at the range of $500 to $700.
At the level of Komandirki and Amphybia , at a lower price (close to $70), they give you: 200 M water resistance, solid made watches and a sense of art hard to find in all other competitors with a 4-5 times higher price.. with accuracy within 15 sec / day..
I am sorry to say that my relation with Meranon @ Christopol started on the wrong foot, but definitively, their product is something to consider before going into any other microbrand manufacturer.
I also think they should push to keep on producing , manufacturing has been on hold for so long for so many models... not knowing the reasons but hopefully they can go back.. the product will fly out of the warehouse.

The great things about vostoks are 1) inexpensive 2) hundreds of dial designs 3) crazy ability to mod these 4) very accurate movements (I've gotten mine to have better accuracy than my Seiko movements). Great review and I'm digging that new Millennium Falcon watch shirt! Do you sell your gear?

nice video Dave...I hope you like them as much as I do...I bought 2, then 3 more...changing bezels, straps and crowns is the bulk of my modding...with the older chrome plated brass models, you can soak the bezel in muriatic acid (try a swimming pool supply store) and it will hold the paint markings but remove the chrome...interesting look...your Amphibia does not appear to have the old plated bezel
