  • Buy my new book Bingham Canyon, help keep Bingham’s history alive. We take a look at the last’s days of Bingham; we show pictures of that sad time. The expanding operation will eventually take over every small community around the mine, then finally Bingham itself. Pictures from the Larry Sax collection, Don Stracks utahrails.net and Utah State Historical Society.

Great video! I am surprised I never heard of this before. I grew up in SLC in the 60's and 70's. Its like they pretend that this town never existed.

My step grandma grew up in copperton and so she lived there with my grandpa and my family has always treated it with reverence for that little town. Barely any people I talk to know it exists outside of my family. I really wonder what will happen when the developers reach all the way to copperton

My parents O'toniel & Evan Sanchez raised 11 children (me included) in Bingham - few personal photos survived. 🚜 Four of us are still kicking. Youngest 74. Oldest 87. Love the videos !

Kennecott bought out my grandparents home along with my great uncles and other family members houses approximately 1957. Most of my relatives lived up there at the time and some are buried at the forgotten cemetery located just outside of Kennecotts property. My grandparents, other relatives and a lot of the residents in Bingham canyon relocated to Kearns after Kennecott bought them out. They really didn't have a choice. It was either sell to Kennecott and get some money to relocate or in a few years they will make you relocate. Can you do a history on Dinkyville in Bingham canyon? I would love to see where that was located at in the canyon as that's where most of my family is from. Thank you for doing these videos. They mean a lot to me. I get to learn the history I never knew but always wanted to know.

I wonder, he says the cemetery was left behind, which if true would leave those buried now under hundreds of feet of earth, not just 6. Do you know if the cemetery physical inhabitants relocated? Can't really do much with the spiritual beings.

same thing happened to Morenci Az. Where the copper pit engulfed and then buried the town.

Well done. I am familiar with the mining history of the Far West but did not know the details of Bingham, other than the mention of it by my Ely mining family.

Strange. I just posted this story in the comments on another site.
My great grandmother ran a cathouse in Bingham. My grandfather worked the mine for a while. When they were scrapping the cathouse, my grandfather took quite a few things including the front door from the cathouse. He eventually put it on his fishing cabin. It was there for years, red and white with one window. During one renovation, the door fell apart when I wasn't there. My parents didn't know all they had to do was redowel it so it got tossed. Too bad because I always had a fantasy of donating the door to Pioneer Village. I know the prominent faith in Utah wouldn't like its history, but I believe it had an important part in Utah history and I'm sorry it was lost.

That is fascinating, yes more of this history should be remembered, the famous cat house in Bingham was 520 Main Street.

@@holdentennant2942 It's my experience that the prominent faith believes their history is the only history that matters. I bet a lot of people would be shocked to discover Utah had brothels. I've even run into people who denied it.

Very interesting video and pictures. Thank you. I am a mining history buff way up in Whitehorse Yukon Canada. We have an old historic copper mine here called the Copper King. It was opened up in 1898 and worked until 1921. It may be named after the Copper King in Bingham. Although there have probability been many Copper King mines in the west as it would have been a popular choice for a name for a copper mine. Does anyone know of any more Copper King Mines of the past? Thanks again. Great video. 👍

Thanks, the Copper King mine is what I named my Layout, because a mine in Park City Utah, was called the Silver King Mine. Good comment.
