I like that Tennant is older now though, since it technically means the 14th Doctor is another "older" Doctor (aside from Capaldi and Hurt) in the new series before the younger Ncuti takes over. I always hate it when people say older Doctors "wouldn't work in modern Who".
I was convinced that Sutekh was coming back toward the end of s5 of Nu Who. The fact that there's 'only one being in the universe powerful enough to get into the TARDIS [and blow it up]', plus all the Egyptian stuff in the museum in the finale. Moffat probably put all that stuff in deliberately (I swear, it felt like that man could read our minds for a while there). Happy birthday Matt!
There's a virgin missing adventure book with the 5th doctor that's a sequel to Pyramids of Mars, with the return of Sutekh, and vaguely also tied into Black Orchid, and I really enjoyed that one, I read the rereleased version they gave us around 2014ish
I thought the performance of Sutech by Gabrielle Woolf really elevates the character (even if he is static). Also I thought this was a highlight for Tom Baker, because in some episodes he underplays the threat of the episode but I really believed that Sutech was a real threat. Enjoyed this, Thank You.
You guys should do Time and the Rani - I sat through that atrocity a couple weeks ago and had to watch Power of the Daleks halfway through to restore my faith in the show.

Happy birthday Matt! Pyramids is fantastic and Sutekh was the first person to ever give me ASMR as a child... fantastic voice. Just never been a fan of Tom's performance but I understand the behind the scenes reason. Bloody love that insane organ music at the end of episode one... chilling!

I really really enjoyed it back then and I still enjoy it today and it remains my third favourite 4th Doctor story along with Deadly Assassin and Genesis of the Daleks.

Sutekh is one of my very favorite Who villains. I love how understated he is, and how we know almost nothing about him, sort of like Lord Sauron. I'm so glad they've only used him once on TV, and very very very sparingly in spinoff media. Did anyone else think that that Passenger thing from Flux was going to be related to Sutekh, somehow? Or perhaps to that "the Shadow" dude from Season 16?
I watched Pyramids of Mars for the first time yesterday, I thought it was very good! Though the expectations were set pretty high, perhaps too high I dare say as I was left wanting a little more. As you mention here the Mars stuff is a bit disappointing and I felt it weird to set the whole thing in a manor house. Classic Who uses that as a setting so often I was hoping for something more unique and more Egyptian perhaps. There wasn't quite as much Egyptian imagery as I'd expected. But I must stress I did enjoy it. Sutekh is phenomenal and I give the story a 8/10

Your discussion of the story has made me want to watch it again. It's a really terrific classic in every sense of the word, story. Both of you have said everything I could have mentioned. However, the one thing I wish it did do. Was more night time scenes. Seeing the Mummy's walking around the woods at night would be so gorgeous! I would love Pyramids to get the special effects update for its Blu Ray release. Completely change the CSO and make Mars eerie and scary and I think you could make the story perfect. Been waiting for this review! Didn't disappoint.

Did they change the head of sutekh, as when it appears in the tardis it does look different to what we see in part 4, ie in the tardis is the nose doesn't look flat it looks more like a K9 snout, it has hair in places and has eyes with pupils. Then when it pops up in episode 4 is pretty different. Still a classic and my all-time favourite tom Baker story. Yes Billy going out via 2 big titties is a good way to go 😆 Also yeah carry on behind is on of the weaker films, but I do love them. Carry on spying, cowboy and screaming being my favourites You could do Battlefield, or have you done that? Greatest show in the galaxy? With Johnny?

Fantastic story, 1st VHS I bought.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but that's a good point. Tom does seem to sell the idea that Sutekh the Destroyer is the real deal.

I saw it here In New Jersey on channel 9 back in the day. This was before it started playing on the local PBS stations.
