Altoona Pennsylvania Weather. How do you survive the long, dark, cold winters?

  • The weather in Altoona, PA is often depressing. The skies seem grey and overcast for months on end. If you're going to live here, you'll need to embrace it. A couple years back I was introduced to the " Little Book of Hygge" by Meik Wiking. The word describes an attitude towards the dark winters and bad weather. The Danish philosophy of embracing the winter by huddling inside with friends and family. Using lighting, clothing, sweets, and boardgames to bring each other together and focus on what is good.
If you still need a little escape. Check out the show I helped produce that will let you tour beautiful Naples, FL for a few minutes..

I grew up in Altoona.. moved to New England when I was 29. I live on Nantucket Island now and our weather is pretty much the same (minus a lot of snow). It’s dark, gloomy, rainy and very windy and stormy November to April. Luckily, I love winter. I really like stormy weather… for all the same reasons that you mention are attributes of Hygge. I keep my surroundings cozy. Also, I think it’s all about keeping sunshine in your heart no matter what the weather. Positive attitude is everything. Thanks for the video. ☀️

Absolutely. It’s about changing the way you look at the situation. Embracing the dark and finding comfort indoors with loved ones. Cozy is a great way to get through the winter.

It's not easy for me to deal with winter I also lived in Florida and it's hard to get used to the change.
Pa is very different and def colder ❄️☃️ however my anxiety is getting better here it's more peaceful and quit unlike big cities

No need to constantly spray for bugs, deal with air conditioning 8 months, no hurricanes, no tornadoes, no alligators, mountains to hike, woods are safer, cheaper, earnest people who can do stuff

Recent winters have been much milder - less snow and warmer. Why move south? Last really severe winters were in middle 1990s, lots of snow and cold. I remember driving through Gallitzin or Cresson, and the plowed snow was as high as the car roof.

I agree. I remember 93 and 94 had feet of snow. However it is still dark and grey for like 5 months.

Clay cup has coziest atmosphere. All three have great coffee. Slightly less costly than Starbucks. Cheers!

Like the video but Christmas is over. You need to take our tree down and embrace the new year. Altoona is a beautiful mountain town.
