  • On April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse passed through parts of North America. Luckily, my house (Akron, Ohio) was located in the path of totality.
In this video, you can watch what happens at my bird feeders from 3:12 pm to 3:19 pm. I have a camera that streams live 24/7.
The totality of the solar eclipse was reached at 3:14:10 pm and lasted for 2 minutes, 55 seconds.
Here is how the above video is organized:
At 00:21, you can watch a sped-up time-lapse of the solar eclipse.
    Totality is reached at 00:54.
Night vision on the camera turns on at 01:07.
    Totality ends at 01:38.
At 02:06, you can watch the solar eclipse in REAL-TIME.
    At 04:21, totality starts.
05:10 - Night vision turns on.
    Totality ends at 07:15.
Can you hear the nighttime creatures during totality?

That one little bird coming to the feeder in the dark! ❤ We were in the path of totality here in WNY and it was the most breathtaking thing I've ever seen!

That's amazing! Thanks for sharing. I remember seeing something like this back over 20 years ago. It went so so cold when the sun was covered, I was shivering and it was a warm, sunny day. I've always remembered it, and how grateful I am to this day for the sun warming us. The birds stopped singing when it got fully dark, and a friends cat went crazy and starting attacking people! Then in no time it was bright sunshine again, the birds sang and the cat return to loving. it's a wild experience ♥ This brought back a lot of memories! We looked at it through a friends welding goggles.

That bird was so hecking confused! It stood still for quite a while after totality, possibly pondering why the night was so short!

I cant believe it was so dark the night vision kicked in! We weren't in the direct path here, so it just looked like an overcast say, except the sky was clear and blue - very eerie!
I like how that song sparrow just waited it out on the ground lol😁

Great video Scott. It was awesome to experience totality here in Akron. Definitely worth all the hype!

THIS was freaking AWESOME! 👍🏻Thank you for this excellent Video and narrative plus the shift from Daytime sounds to Nighttime sounds of frogs!
In Tampa, Florida, we had only about 60%. Even so, I heard doves when the sun dimmed just a tiny bit, as it is very intense here. And we felt the temperature drop!

Yes! the temperature dropped here about 15 degrees, but it wasn't reflected on the temperature icon on the video. Thanks for the comment. :)

@BirdWatchingHQ I noticed that! I knew that wasn't right - I wonder if it was all so fast that the thermometer didn't register the change.

Thanks for posting your record of reactions to this total solar eclipse. Curious that I could not hear any bird vocalisations on this recording, especially during the false dawn. The USA eclipse got a lot of coverage on TV here (in Australia) but weirdly, it mostly seemed to be large crowds of noisy people gathered to see the eclipse. Which of course is fairly pointless, when it would best be useful for people to be away from other people, in the bush, to observe what the birds (and other fauna) do. One of my best pieces of work, admittedly long ago, was preparing this article (1982) ‘A record of avian and other responses to the total solar eclipse - 23 October 1976’, Australian Bird Watcher 9: 179-209. (I believe this is still the world’s biggest analysis of animal behaviour to a solar eclipse. After many years, I now have the report available as a pdf)

I was hoping you'd post something! I was SW of you in Miamisburg, just south of Dayton. Our totality began at 3:10:31. I saw a solar prominence on the S/SW edge of the Sun/Moon then a few seconds later it turned into the diamond ring!
