Years ago we were on vacation and pulled up in Bobby and Ethels drive way, just enough to back out and turn around. They were a bunch of kids, and several adults, playing football in the front yard. They just starred at us, as we did them, we weren't in a very fancy car. But, a couple of the kids waved to us as we were pulling off. When I looked back, I was always amazed that we got that close to them and wasn't even stopped by any security or the police. They could have been any family in America outside playing with their kids.
The family of Bobby and Ethel had 11 kids in chronological order they were : Kathleen born July 1951, Joseph September 1952, Bobby Jr January 1954, David March 1955, Courtney September 1956, Michael February 1958, Kerry June 1959 Christopher July 1963, Max March 1965, Douglas April 1967 Rory December 1968
How very young RFK and Ethel were. Their children were adorable and their lives seem almost idyllic. It's a mercy that they were not able to see into the future and see what would become of them all. Little David would die a tragic premature death, Ethel was pregnant with Michael who would meet scandal and also premature death, and of course RFK would die at the hands of an assassin at the end of the 60's.
It is. First, Joe was killed oversea, John and Robert were assassinated, and Ted became notorious for drowning a woman. Jack, Jackie, Bobby, and Ethel were all adorable, as were all their kids.
Not to mention Courtney's daughter Saiorse dying at 22 from an overdose. And the latest tragedy Kathleen's daughter Maeve and grandson Gideon's death by drowning. In addition Robert Jr.'a wife committed suicide.
I wish I could have known both Bobby and Ethel! I find them to be an adorable couple and that Bobby was a no nonsense man as well as a sweet and loving husband and father!
Rema Lim, I agree that Ethel IS (she just celebrated her 90th Birthday) a strong lady. However, I do not think it is fair to say that she is “way stronger than Jackie”. Jackie endured many things in her life, including the loss of a stillborn baby girl in the late 1950’s, and the loss of a baby son only three months before having her husband’s head explode right in front of her. I lived through those times. I will never forget the way our lovely First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, held her head up high in public -and led our country through those horrible dark days after President Kennedy’s assassination on 11/22/1963.
@@remalim9471 I think you are correct. Ethel also lost both her parents at the same time in a plane crash. Just awful. Then she lost Bobby, and soon after, two of her young sons. Like you said, Ethel never leaned on another man or on her place in the world. Just her faith.
@@remalim9471 You don't need to tear one down to raise the other up.. You DO realize that, right? They can both be celebrated, you can admire one without putting down the other and vice versa. Every person is an individual and moving on from a deceased spouse doesn't make you what you had with them any less loving and loyal. Life is for the living. Ethel can be a strong, smart wonderful woman, wife and mother and Jackie can ALSO be a strong, smart, wonderful wife and mother. They can BOTH be beautiful. They can BOTH be intelligent, sassy, funny, classy etc. Every person deals with life how they can and it isn't a contest. Just remember that there's a lot to be said if you compared RFK's children with his JFK's children. See? It's just a nasty, rude thing to do so why do it? Ethel isn't better than Jackie, Jackie isn't better then Ethel. They are two different individuals with their own strengths, weaknesses, personalities and both have admirable qualities and both loved their husbands dearly and lost them much to soon. They also both have weaknesses, flaws, their marriages weren't fairy tales and perfect. They have both made big mistakes, been nasty, been mean. They're human. Celebrate ALL strong woman and their differences. Don't tear other women down to build another up and stop pitting women against each other! This attitude is exactly why solidarity and sisterhood continue to be destroyed.
They'd known tragedy long before this taping. Ethel's parents had recently died in an airplane crash. She had a niece who was born blind and deaf a few years prior. Robert's sister and brother died in separate tragedies. His sister was lobotomized. I doubt they worried about tragedy, the just took life as it came.
Why is it that people in the 60s or let's say early days, sounded the same and sounded like we'll mannered. Jeez... Look at people how they talk nowadays. We throw hands, we curse, we don't smile. Att from here to timbuktu
What a difference in the overall tone of the interview...the respect shown by both the interviewer and the interviewee. It would do today's crop of "journalists" a lot of good to dig out recordings like this and see how it's SUPPOSED to be done.
Ok I'm trippin' on Ethel...I bet in real life she is so much more relaxed and outspoken! I can tell she is not very comfortable in this interview...she is so adorable, gotta love her! Makes one wonder what kind of First Lady she would have been?
I thought Ethel did very well. I always liked both Bobby and her. It was very interesting to learn that Bobby pretty much led a dual life...one as loving husband and father and the other as a political figure. It is said he was an absolute tyrant in his political life.
Are you kidding?? RFK's kids were always in trouble right thru adulthood. Who are you kidding? They ran absolutely wild after Bobby was killed. Drugs, Joe III caused a car accident that permantly paralyzed a young girl, Kerry was arrested for DUI, David died from a drug overdose, RFK Jr. had numerous affairs and his wife committed suicide (he himself was a heroin addict), Michael had an affair with an underage babysitter before he died - - come on! How in the world could you say something like their kids turned out better than Jackie's and JFK's kids? You don't know the facts.
Not kidding. SOME of RFK's kids were bad, but the majority came out okay. The boys were bad, but the girls were better. The girls all turned out to be government workers, filmmakers, lawyers and human rights activists. Caroline and JFK Jr weren't hard working. They were spoilt. Had JFK lived, his kids would've turned out much better. Jackie was a so-so mother, always concerned with her shopping sprees and travelling. She didn't encourage them to be responsible nor hard working enough. Caroline makes money off her parents' possessions and JFK Jr flew a plane when he wasn't properly licensed and killed himself and his wife and sister-in-law. What he did was very irresponsible. Jackie and JFK's kids were okay, nice people, but not anything very special when compared overall to RFK's kids. JFK Jr was a very, very kind person, but irresponsible. Most of RFK's kids are good people AND more ambitious.
I thought JFK Jr. was great and think Caroline still is great. Some of Ethel's kids have had a few negative incidents, but they're largely working in public life and doing very good things.
Look at the way Mrs.. Kennedy looks at Robert. I love the idea of these days. Women were traditional, and supported their husbands. "The government has to be run by men, and men are fallible, " he said. Now, we have a woman Vice President. I have to take care of my own business, I have to deal with men in business. I am not embarrassed to say, I wish we could live on one salary and women were home. Ethel went on to be somewhat of a diplomat and was involved in social services after Bobby died. She became a career woman. You can see here that she was very bright. Nothing like she was here, so demure and her role seemed to be her kids.
Anyone notice how Bobby disappears to put the kids, who are somewhat restless, to bed while Ethel shows the dining room. After a brief interval, poof, Bobby reappears sans kids. Come on. They had nannies/houseworkers to look after the kids. This was all for show and helped create the image of the Kennedys as the all-American family. Bobby was a workaholic, Ethel probably spent more time shopping, playing tennis and planning parties than parenting her kids. Read a good biography of this duo. Hickory Hill followed the Skakel tradition of a chaotic home. This is the great American image making machine at work, 1950's style.
Absolutely! Many biographies even state that Ethel was inept where domestic housekeeping tasks were concerned. The family employed cooks, nurses, chauffeurs, tutors, gardeners. Today, you may find a Skakel or a Kennedy who cooks and cleans. In the 30's thru the 90's, you definitely found that most of them employed others. Ethel even has trouble answering Mr. Murrow's questions about domestic duties.
Please get your “facts” correct. Ethel and Bobby Kennedy had 11 children. Their 11th child (Rory), was born 6 and 1/2 months after Bobby’s assassination. Most of Ethel’s children are NOT deceased. David passed away in 1984, of an apparent drug overdose. Michael passed away in 1997, as a result of a skiing accident. Ethel has lost NONE of her grandchildren, nor any of her great grandchildren.
She sadly just lost another grandchild and a great grandchild on April 2, 2020. Maeve Townsend McKean( daughter of Kathleen..Bobby and Ethel's eldest) and her son Gideon drowned in the Chesapeake Bay. They accidentally kicked a ball into the water and got in a canoe to retrieve it. They were carried out into the bay and drowned.
Of all the amazing Kennedys, and of course JFK great as he was, Bobby Kennedy has always been my favourite. The tragedy and loss to his family and to the country of his evil killing will be forever a black mark on the soul of America.
I always liked this woman....and then I read how she stiffed an Indiana restaurateur who hosted her son's wedding reception in 1982 and could not abide her anymore. I can forgive just about anything but when a millionairess screws a working man out of $8,000 and then dodges his phone calls and then forces him to file suit to recoup what is rightfully his, well, that is nearly impossible to forgive. Simply contemptible.
Double Ghod I feel sorry for her losing RFK, she really loved him. But she was a right Bitch to the older sons. She Was devastated by his death. She just shut off to the boys And and hit them when they Played up. I'm not picking On her, would have been hell Trying to cope with a large Family. They should have gased the bastard that shot RFK. Idiot killed him over The six day war, he wasn't Even in the Johnson gov.
Double Ghod, For Heaven’s sake, Lady - get a life! Do you actually believe everything that you read? Even if this incident DID happen, you do not know all of the facts, so how can you be so judgmental?

What an amazing interview, she seemed so lovely and very inspired woman, who always looks at his man with lots of love on her eyes. Simplicy wonderful
Awwwwww their little cries from embarrassment 😫😂
Hahaaa David was crying and later Bobby jr started too hahaaa
When he comes back for the elephant :D
Charming video! Ethel ran that roost!
Kathi, You seem to be one of very, very few on here that has any sense whatsoever!
Wow If they only knew what the future would hold for this tragic beautiful family.
She handle herself wonderfully
I love the way they all TALK
Ethel held her own....1 amazing female for sure
2024 Ethel is with her Bobby again!
🙏🙏🙏🙏🥲🥲🥲🥰🥰🥰🌹
This is heartwarming.
Ethel and Bobby resemble each other. Ethel far far different from the glam breathless Jackie. ...
Loved when bobby went back for Davids elephant
That was little Bobby's toy.not David's.
I love the Kennedys❣🌻💐🌹🌺🌼⚘🍀
Why is it that people in the 60s or let's say early days, sounded the same and sounded like we'll mannered. Jeez... Look at people how they talk nowadays. We throw hands, we curse, we don't smile. Att from here to timbuktu
lol the first mtv home interview
Its amazing , as you say first mtv home,..,
Bobby was twice the politician than either of his brothers and would have made a great President
I never Heard Ethel Talk Before " Wow She sounds like a Kennedy "
Most of the Kennedy's and their spouses were from New England or close by.
I miss The Kennedy's Just Like I Miss The Beatles ! !
The Skakels are actually Midwest US transplants, moving East in 1934.
@Kathi Papaleo. Ethel is a Chicago girl.
These people were highly intelligent. They deserved all of the adulation they have gotten.
What a difference in the overall tone of the interview...the respect shown by both the interviewer and the interviewee. It would do today's crop of "journalists" a lot of good to dig out recordings like this and see how it's SUPPOSED to be done.
Ethel and Robert Kennedy were a lovely couple
He seems quite humble.
What a lovely little piece... thank you for uploading this :)
Absolutely! Like and subscribe to our page for more! 2018 is going to be packed full of new content!
Tomorrowpictures.TV Wonderful !!
RFK and Ethel's kids turned out better than Jackie and JFK's kids.
Ethel Kennedy was adorable when she was young.
The destroyer he mentions that was named after his older brother was part of the blockade during the Cuban missle crisis...
He is so hansome man
jbthebest-ni6qv. I also read he was even better looking in person. His pictures don't do him justice allegedly.
What a contrast from any conversation with any politician today!
Wonderful man and a wonderful father xxxxxxx
Fascinating!
Can't believe Ethel is still alive!!!
Almost 95 years old!
You are exactly right. Feminism is a scourge.
I love them so beautiful
How sad Bobby and Abe Lincoln suffered the same fate
And JFK
Bobby looks shy lol
Yes he always was haha
Благодарю эту прекрасную смелую семью . Их не смогли запугать .
Well they did have ELEVEN children and lived in a big house and had very political lives. They were very wealthy. It's not surprising.
Leave them alone! I don’t care if it was all for show. It’s better than watching crap about single baby mamas and fatherless kids!
Ethel bathed and fed the children. Or so I've read.
What a strong woman.
10 or 11 children.
She’s still alive 2018.
Sad! That most of her children have deceased!
Including a few grandkids...
Kayte 0207 exactly!
Kayte 0207 correction she has lost a grandchild... Soirsee died in Ethel’s own home.
Bobby was a Lovein father he took the baby upstairs after crying!! And he came back too get the teddy bear
He looked and acted so much like JFK. So heartbreaking.
Rip RFK
RIP David Kennedy
I wonder how Ethel's youngest sibling handles having such a famous older sister. There had to be incredible pressure.
Of all the amazing Kennedys, and of course JFK great as he was, Bobby Kennedy has always been my favourite.
The tragedy and loss to his family and to the country of his evil killing will be forever a black mark on the soul of America.
Lovely video
Very interesting -- I take it is 1957.
BuddyKrol probably yes
It brakes my heart
Beautiful family! ❤
It’s sad that these kids lost a great dad
Robert F Kennedy Jr for President 🇺🇸
❤Vp= TULSI 24
RFK, Jr was not in the mood😂 I’m really voting for RFK, Jr. ❤️🇺🇸🤍🇺🇸💙
Same. I really hope he gets on the ballot.
They seem very normal.
But she was a right
Bitch to the older sons. She
Was devastated by his death.
She just shut off to the boys
And and hit them when they
Played up. I'm not picking
On her, would have been hell
Trying to cope with a large
Family. They should have gased the bastard that shot
RFK. Idiot killed him over
The six day war, he wasn't
Even in the Johnson gov.
O
Double Ghod There's Always TWO SIDES To Every Story. Why Did She Refused To Pay The Bill?
Double Ghod, For Heaven’s sake, Lady - get a life! Do you actually believe everything that you read? Even if this incident DID happen, you do not know all of the facts, so how can you be so judgmental?
@@Kayte-tv2cw how come you guys can't accept that these people aren't as perfect as they seem. They're people who do people things. They also dont have privacy. This ain't no surprise. She went bat shit after Bobby's death , Bobby Jr even wrote about her in his book like geez how about YOU do your research
Ethel was and is a naturally beautiful woman.
Because she’s beautiful on the inside
She sure was!
How times have changed.
