Hopefully, it will open up your eyes and ears so that you can change up some EVH licks you know to suit your own style better.

That stretchy one you did, way back in the mid 2000s i got a hold of the largo 82 bootleg and saw him do something similar after the somebody get me a doctor solo. I literally didnt know what he was doing exactly so I just did my own thing since at that time i was at least somewhat familiar with that huge stretch. I still dont think i have it exact but it sounds close enough to what he does thanks for sharing this stuff, it’s definitely inspiring to me since i dont play as often as i once did

The lick at 3:18 is very similar to what Dimebag does on Throes of Rejection solo (3m13s) off the Far Beyond Driven album. Obviously, heavily inspired by Eddies diminished pattern you've shown here!

Awesome video! Awesome lick thank you! There is a very ripping descending lick that Eddie does at the end of that Oakland Colosseum performance right as Alex Van Halen starts to hit the flaming gong! Can you demonstrate that one? It would be hard to transcribe because there’s so much going on, but I think you can do it! It’s one of the most ripping things I’ve ever heard
I still find it hard to believe how advanced and outstanding Ed was a musician and guitarist . Some of the licks seem simple ish ( once you know how) but .. they did not exist before Ed brought them to life IMO. Great video thanks for posting you have the soul
Nobody talks about it? This is all I used to talk about! That solo for Unchained is from the Oakland shows filmed during the Fair Warning Tour. Always loved the crazy, wild and very different variation on the studio version solo that he does there. Incredible! Great job putting it together. 🤘
That lick you showcased reminds me of a similar lick of Joe Satriani. You'll hear it on Summer Song. In the middle section he tremolo picks the G string and walks up the string and jumps to play a stretchy G pentatonic lick on the high E. After that he plays some dramatic double stops, and there the lick I want you to hear happens. It's a really fast pentatonic lick with the blue note thrown in there. I think both that lick and the Eddie lick you played are nice for mixing up your playing.
Totally appreciate these vids Cameron. I started repicking EVH at the age of 13 (in 1981) thanks to my parents old record player which could go down to 16 rpm. I nearly destroyed the thing.😁

With the last micro lick in that big lick, after the slower version, you hybrid pick one of the last notes in the faster version, is this something Eddie did because it adds another note to the lick which changes it a lot from the slower one you taught.
@CameronCooper yeah I had to slow it down when learning to figure out how those last couple notes were played, but I think I have it down now. Thanks for this video Cameron this is one of the nicest sounding licks I’ve ever learned!
I picked up my guitar the other day just for shits and giggles with an attitude of fuck it let's see what happens and well I found out that I still suck. The amount of time Cameron has spent perfecting his guitar playing is a testament to dedication at an early age. I'm currently 61. I don't think I have that kind of time (being an adult sucks), so I just watch and enjoy at .25 speed to try and figure it out. Love this guy.
I’m pretty sure the stretchy one is influenced by Allan Holdsworth, one of Eddie’s favorite guitarists. He is also one of the greatest guitarists of all time, like Eddie, but incredibly under appreciated. Eddie took inspiration from some awesome Allan licks and transformed them into his own unique lines that are absolutely some of my favorites in the VH discography
in the start at the end of the run you hit the bar and harmonic on the 2nd or 3rd while bending the string do you have a video that describes that more?
At the beginning of the video, there’s that famous high pitch pinch harmonic accompanied with a whammy. How is that accomplished and what string and fret is played on? I’ve tried over and over to get it and I can’t.
What tuning are you looking to drop to? If it's a top mounted Floyd it's a lot easier to manage, floating bridges require more work that a tech should do, which involves changing spring tension etc
This sounds like the Yamaha THR30ii today. Amazing little bit of kit. I'll never get to Cam's level of playing, but it's nice to be able to play with sound options so easily with the Yamaha.
