I've watched all 7, and will watch #8. Thoroughly enjoy the series. Among other things, the master's dynamism is great in many ways, not least its inclusiveness, passion for art, and non-sappy enthusiasm with the students. He scores an A+ in each episode.
Art lesson, history lesson, technique lesson, correction of piece lesson and a good example of coaching, not to mention well written, well produced and well performed. Well done all the way around. I don't know how I could have missed this excellent program for so many years.

This is absolutely a good example to show painting, he made them step out of their comfort zone and paint something they are not used to paint, the end result is pretty much irrelevant in this show, it's more about the happiness that painting brings rather then making a masterpiece. It's not ment as a tutorial for the viewers nor is it a competition to show who's the better painter, this is ment to inspire those who watch it and that it does.
Yes it's more of a study, rather than tutorial. He does a really good job of pushing the students to get into the mind of the original artist. Such a cool series.
That looked like the most testing class yet. And I think they all did well considering Renoir's technique is so subtle and none of them had done anything like it before. It shows what a good teacher can do in bringing out the best in a pupil and suprising them with their own abilities. All of them were proud of their achievements which is great. 😊
It wasn't so successful when three others tried a Monet-type of painting and had to choose themselves what to paint. This Renoir thing was ready-made. The students just had to apply what clumsy John said and showed to them.
John is a fantastic teacher. It is hard not to take the brush and DO what you are asking the student to do. Drawing it out of the student is an art in itself. All three of them were able to create a recognizable rendition of the model, even though none of them were figuratively painters.🖤🇨🇦
Friend had an egg bound chicken and called for advice. I told her to use some lubricant jelly and try to ease the egg out - She asked if she could use "Astro-glide". TMI.
I did art modeling for U.C.L.A. off and on for 30 years. Also Barnsdall Art Center and Hollywood Art school. I would do yogic poses sometimes which some of the students love. I am also an "artist" in the old fashioned way (I like doing faces and figures). If a creepy old teacher ever touched me with a tiny brush I would have punched him in the nose. Bloody good show, still...I don't trust people who insist on showing their teeth.
Amazing study. Seeing how great the masters are be it painting or photography can only be seen when one tries it ones self. If one succeeds in any medium it becomes a delight and a thing of beauty forever. The thought such a thing may survive decades or centuries is motivation for the work.
Bravo! John Myatt! You are a super teacher. I've watched Cezanne and Hopper, but Renoir is the toughest so far. And all your students have done well. Bravo!
Iam so happy I found this show. The concept of taking the 3 people, with experience or not and having them copy a painting is unique, educational , and entertaining. I paint in oils and can learn alot. I find his manor and voice relaxing as well. Thank you.

Everyone should at least try the old masters way of creating the values as underpainting as Christine did, then glaze the final color over it. I underpaint the entire canvas in a color which is the predominant light of the moment- often with Siena. The result is a color that disappears and reappears throughout the final product. This technique was a real breakthrough for me as an intermediate artist.
Short-haired girl is adorable and quite stunning. She has real star quality as well. 26:00 is where she shines. She could Also make millions doing ASMR. Her voice and cadence are ever relaxing.
I would like to see one done on a watercolor artist.. But you do learn a lot about art here, despite what medium you paint in.. I was impressed by his lubricant trick and it was funny that he applied it to this show. He got way to close to the model though.
Forger guy is enthusiastic and people mistake him for being rude but that is just his great positive energy being mistaken. Black dude - like a dark cloud and so miserable. American girl accused of being a lesbian on here should make a decent high-end model and has fame ahead of her. Old chick is the only one who can realistically draw/paint and she is just sweet, down to earth and talented too.
You forgot to describe the centrepiece, the model. Wasn't she lovely and so forgiving vis-à-vis the old insensitive sensualist? And rude he was: plumpness, she is definitely a plump young woman (the model), not the words of a decent man. And yes, the old chick did great.
For those of you who went #@?! like me, either he misspoke or he's got the wrong definition of opaque. Using an extender that thins out your paint will cause it to become LESS opaque, and more transparent or translucent. That should have been caught and fixed in post production with a voice over. These terms are important, and basic mistakes like this (and a few others I've bitten my tongue over) are a disservice to the brilliant concept of the show and those who are learning from this program as well. (Here's the soapbox back, I'm done.)

I totally disagree. You can paint over any mistakes in acrylic. The quick drying is wonderful. There are mediums that help those who prefer slower drying. Acryics are instant gratification. Your painting is ready to hang 24 hours after completion. Give them another try sometime. You may be surprised
I loved the hint about KY... Never thought of using it that way but it works well and it's a darn sight less expensive than the "pro art" stuff. Other people use it? Well yeah. I put it on my hands before I work with fiberglass. It fills the pores so you get the 'itchies." I also use it to detail shine the rubber items on my classic auto. C'mon people... must your minds always head to the gutter? Blimey!
I agree with Scootsey. Drying fast is a good thing. When you go to put color on top of color when you work with oils you're just pushing the paint around, oils are far too plyable.

Excellent job teaching Renoir appreciation, if nothing else! I wonder if the mentor used acrylics to forge the masters. I've no problem with the lub jelly holding or not holding ... since acrylics have their own quirky longevity. I'd love to see the forger imitate a Renoir and teach us. Renoir is one of my favs for portraits and figures. I study Renoir repeatedly but never come near his excellence.
When the designer called Renior "classic", I felt a shock because I don't believe she actually knows the difference between classic and modern. But, to paint like Renior is a good goal to accomplish.
Agreed. Vine coal (my choice) or prick & pounce, I would have thought. To the person who thinks charcoal is messy and pencil is better for it's indelibility... you haven't had much, if any time in the studio.

I'm using these shows to learn painting myself. he's a great straight talking presenter. my favourite artist so far is andre derain tho I can't say I like renoir much tbh.
Taking measurements isn't going to help if you need to fill the canvas with the model, it's going to make the model as big as she appears to where he's standing on the canvas. Masters are masters because they bend rules or "cheat".
depends of what you define forgiving as, acrylics are less "permanent" than oils and are also easier to experiment with in terms of mixing...I think it more has to do with the money in this case though the amount of paint they use in this series in oils would cost ten of thousands.
Doesn't make much sense to me, if they have to use gel to keep it open longer. They might as well have used oils and an alkyd medium. Recreating these techniques in oils is hard enough. Acrylics require a very different approach.
Good quality oils go a long way, and they're not that expensive. I doubt they'd be worried about oil paint breaking their budget in a show like this, even if they were stocking up on Old Holland. Mixing is the same for oils and acrylics, pigment is pigment, the main difference is the drying time. This really makes no sense to me.
I think it's good for him to show that you can make appealing paintings not only in oils but also in acrylics. I guess more people use acrylics these days than oils. Me too, among other stuff.
What the heck was the puffing blowing thing he did when he was helping Christine with the glazing. Near the end of the video around the 22 minute mark. He didn't have to make that sound. It was So inappropriate. Everything else he was saying in the video about eroticism and sensuality, I understand that aspect And I suppose it is relevant to the art in question but then he went a bit pervy, creepy and sexual With making the sound with his mouth. He even apologised for doing it. Ugh.

I believe acrylics were used for the show so that the paintings would dry faster and could be framed and shown at the end
And glazing. Oils can take weeks between the first layer and the glazing layer.
Technic of these great artist is always intriguing, ready to try a Renoir myself.
They both have pros and cons. It just depends on the person and what suits them best.

Acrylics are not forgiving at all, they dry very fast. There's no medium more forgiving than oils.

Slow-dri blending medium it helps enhance color blending also keeps similar tone. Expect when acrylic darks when dry.

He mostly used regular house paints which he got from a builder's supply place on the cheap. They would be water based acrylics generally.

I have only ever seen Myatt use acrylics, on his other shows maybe he is just partial to them.
