Very cool. Was 25 and had just graduated from MSU. Born and raised. Grew up near the capitol and was born in Sparrow Hospital. Been in St Louis since 1994. 5 siblings still in Lansing. Going back for a concert on September 22nd at the Cadillac Room. Should be fun. Thanks for posting.
4:39 I can't believe how much East Grand River through East Lansing has changed in recent years with all of the high-rise apartments and such. It looked rather plain back then in comparison, but I miss those days. Eating at Dooley's was one of my childhood highlights :)
A lot of Okemos Michigan is stuck 80s even a bit of 70s and 60s, especially the houses and neighborhoods near downtown Okemos those neighborhoods are old and look about the same as they did then.
Wow.... where I was born and just one year after. I remember that Spartan Theater very well... that's where I saw my first movie in a theater. I also fondly remember discovery zone being there after the movie theater. Memories..... Time flies too fast
I moved to Lansing MI. the same year this was filmed " 1987 " . Talk about bringing back memories. And the Spartan theater in Frandor. I love looking at these old videos. Please keep on playing these videos... 💖💓🆒💯
Wow. I drive through here almost every day. It's amazing to see the things that are still there and the things that became run down ghosts. The camera focus is killing me. Lol.
The weather is just like it always was (almost always), cloudy, gray, overcast, drizzle, cold. But growing up in Lansing I accepted it as normal. Still great memories.
I was only 2 for most of this year, but was born in Lansing (& lived within a 30 minute drive my whole life). This is so cool to see. Thanks for sharing!
I live and grew up in Lansing I was 11 when this video was made and damn it brings back memories of me riding my bike and swing how things looked back then , wow
Are you saying that they were using "dope" as in model airplane glue? That would be dangerous. Or perhaps a slang reference to marijuana? That would also be quite dangerous. Or perhaps you are speaking some odd dialect of English.
Remember the civic center? I seen motley crue there oh and Ted Nugent's but seeing Alice in chains a the silver dollar was the best talk about up and close
WVIC, the "new 95 FM" :) ...for some reason I never liked that station back then, but the songs I am hearing in the background are bringing me nice memories.
That was my favorite station growing up (though I started listening roughly a year before the flip to country). Just hearing a young Monica Harris in the background is bringing back memories for me LOL.
I used to listen to 95 FM all the time growing up. Then when I was a senior in high school, they switched to Buzz 95, an all modern rock station. That station was awesome. It lasted less than a year before they switched formats again... pfft
Should been around in the 70/80's, Frandor was major Cruising area, cars came from many miles away. We'd go to Northside Drive Inn in Dewitt or Rocky Horror at Frandor, the second Mall in all of Michigan built in the 50's. After it was over to Burger King across the street at one time one the Busiest in US
I was so excited to see the old Frandor but it panned away lol Amazing video, so nostalgic as I was born this year so my whole childhood looked a lot like this.
This brings back memories! Been a Lansing resident my entire life (45 years) I instantly recognize this as Saginaw eastbound. Ahh the days where there were 4 lanes of traffic, not 3 with that pointless bike lane they now have on the right. I totally forgot there was once a train track right before the bridge coming up to Cedar. And that car totally blew through a red light going north on Grand at 0:55. Someone grab that guy's plate number! Ahh, never mind. It's been 35 years, lol
Gosh, so nostalgic. Thanks for sharing... it's been years since I've been in Lansing, and even more years since it's looked like this. Too bad you didn't get the mall and the Toys 'R Us in that footage.
Now there is a Rite Aid where the theater was, McD's next to the church has been gone 30 years, Now they have built high rise apartments and parking ramps above the East Lansing businesses all along the strip throughout East Lansing and Lansing for student housing. Sears closed and is now the epa center for Covid testing. Lots of changes. I grew up here. A few bars in E.L are still around that I partied in during college. Love the 80s music on the radio.
I think McDonald’s was there until early 2000 or somewhere in there, I remember going in there in 1997 after an appointment next door at the house between McDonald’s and Peoples Church.
I saw “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” at that theater the day it was released on my birthday. I completely forgot the train tracks on Saginaw, and the Arby’s and McDonalds where Grand River and Michigan split. I felt like a little kid riding in the back of my moms 1978 Chevette again!
Ha, saw Rocky Horror in 70's there. Married at Peoples Church next to E.L. McDonalds a few months after this was taken. Talking of a Micky D's, this Video 1987 at Larch/Sag not a McDonalds there yet, built then closed over 10yrs ago. Didnt last long...
I would love to see more videos from back in the day. It makes me happy and a little sad as I think of how many of my loved ones were still roaming the earth back then.
NOTICE, how roads and traffic is flowing quite well. Compare to the changes that have been made since then, slow traffic, more opportunities for tickets, it look like all the changes are for not. (Backwards intuitive).
I'm still in Lansing michigan. I bought my first new car in 1987! I drove through this area last week. I don't remember the Spartan theater. It must have been where the Red Lobster is in Frandor. I do remember the Shell gas station next door to it. Wow memories.
I just saw the first place I worked. Pete's Frandor Shell gas station. And next door. the theater that we spent every week end getting high as hell watching The Wall or The Rocky Horror Picture Show At midnight for $1. Good times!
I feel so old that I was born the next year. The only thing that still looks the same are the Quality Dairy stores, which are still going strong. I used to work on the owners Dodge Charger at the dealership. Still a family run business
I miss street racing I loved my 442 I had a small block my friend had a 455 big block in his 442 he wouldn't let his girlfriend drive it but he would let me. So fun
Wish there was a better shot between Hillcrest and the People Church. So old Biggby was an Arby's and the car wash was a McDonalds? Was Crunchy's there? Camera equipment sure has come a long way. I never knew there was a theater in Frandor.
Crunchy's opened in about 1983. I lived behind there in 1984 and watched a lot of the Tigers' epic World Series season's games at Crunchy's that summer! It replaced what had long been an Italian restaurant at that location.
Don't know, at least 3-4 dozen Businesses gone/torn down, gas stations, Restaurants and the Theaters. Train Tracks across Saginaw are gone now. Use to take Coal to Ottawa Street Power Plant until early 90's. Love the other Lansing Video posted on here from late 1960's, was just old enough when they torn down all the Washington Mall Buildings b4 they closed it off to traffic. Actually road my bike of 496 right before was opened to cars. Wish more these old videos would be posted
Pause. The building at Grand River and Abbot- it looks like there was a fire right where the alley exists between Beggar's and the adjacent building. Thinking 'bout the alley - there are beams between the two buildings. Things make sense, whoa.
Two years before my time amazing footage, wish the camera was more stable and scanned the whole area but grateful for the history, driving down that same street today almost everything is changed but that damn quality diary still there lol you get great views when you waiting at Burger King twenty mins for your food 😂😂😂
@@kwantoon 1987 mine was VHS, about $500 from Wards. This video seems like was filmed on older Format. Father In Law played/recorded all the time, 50's though 2008 when he passed...

Yes. I got it lol
I just spotted this
Yess
Yep
Yeah I did lol
So freaking cool! I grew up in Lansing. In Texas for 30 years now. Seeing these landmarks and hearing the music is like going back to a bookmark.

The music is the touch that really takes you back. Of course it was just life then.
Who saw that truck blow that red light on Grand Avenue through Saginaw next to L.C.C. at .55 sec in?
Yep. He was SCREAMING through there. It's a wonder there weren't any traffic accidents.
Oh my God I forgot about the movie theater we used to watch Rocky Horror Picture Show out there
I remember that. So much has changed but so much is the same too.
I was just thinking , the same thing ! ! !
Let's do the Time Warp , again ! ! !
I was going there to see Pink Floyd or something at that time, cool memories.
Hanging out at frandor having fun then going over to rocky horror yep and doing the time warp. Good times🤪

Definitely remember a lot of this stuff.
Drove around on my job from 1991 through 1998, moved away to help a friend in need (a stroke).
