And this.... is why we love you and Stephany so much! I'm so glad the open garden was a great success and you both got a chance to meet so many viewers. Thank you for giving us a review of how the event went - I would have been there if I lived a lot closer, but loved hearing the questions and comments that many had. How sweet that you received some gifts - and the painting is absolutely beautiful. I hope you both get some needed rest! ❤❤❤❤
Haha, I was going to stop by Boulted Bread and bring you pastries, but my husband thought that would be “over the top.”. That’s the last time I take his advice on these matters! 😂 I loved the garden, thank you!. Oh, and your son is a lovely person.😀
I was fortunate enough to have attended the open garden on Saturday and I’d like to second the fact that the community you have built with the channel are fabulous people! While it was awesome to have met Jim and Stephany, I met and talked with some really nice and interesting folks while walking through!! Thanks again for inviting us to tour your garden!!! And thanks for the Betterboxwood that I won in the drawing! ❤️ Heather from Stella
I grew gomphrena this year the first time because of you and the bees do love them so much. And yes I was truly surprised by your u number of bees Saturday. And how unbothered they are by people. Thank you for opening your home. It’s was so amazing to see so much in a smaller space
Had a wonderful time with you Stephany and Charlie on Saturday. What a beautiful space you have created. Such wonderful hospitality. You guys are amazing people. Thank you for allowing us to come and enjoy all your hard work for the day.
It was a fantastic day being there. They say never meet your heroes but it couldn’t have been a better experience for our family. Jim and Steph you two are so kind for letting us come visit the garden. Thank you. Let me know if y’all plan on using the footage of Tatertot getting into the cooler? I’d love to see it.
I am so happy to hear that not only did the visitors have a wonderful day, but that both you and Steph did as well. I would have loved to come, but was happy to hear all about it from you.
You’re a good man- humble. Sad that I was not able to be there in person to meet your family. Texas is taking a beating again weather wise and am in the midst of redoing the gardens after the rains we have. Starting back with some of the older videos and using the video on the channel to do the repairs in the gardens. Thanks for all that you & Steph do for us out here. ❤ North Dallas (TX) 😊
Thank you so much for letting us tour your garden! It was really great to see it in context and I’m blown away by the efforts it took to mulch! Thank you both ❤️
Thank you for sharing the questions people had while visiting your garden. So wish I could have been a part of this garden tour. You and Stephany are so great teachers and I learn so much,I h from you both.
You're like my garden teacher, calm, humble & informative. So happy you had so much garden fans stopping by. I"m all the way in Ct or else i would've been there.❤
Thank you Jim & Stephany and furries for your generosity in sharing your garden and knowledge. I’m so glad that you like the South African dish towel with the Protea on it - that is our national flower. Your Agapanthas (we call them Aggie’s Panties ;-)) are gorgeous!
I love that you focus on the soil--such good advice for newbies, and the rest of us. The painting is lovely. To have that many people show up when the temps were in the 90s, really says something!
Thanks for opening your garden to us. I spoke to your wife and son while there, because yes, you always had someone talking to you and the only thing I had to say was to request your autograph. I told your son I felt like I was at a celebrities house 😂😂. Thanks for sharing your passion with all of us. !
I live locally and I really appreciate the both of you and the knowledge your channel provides. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to your open garden due to my Achilles tendon repair. I was not confident in my ability to walk and not tromp through your garden. I know how Holly feels. I hope you both host future open gardens. Thank you for being a positive influence in the realm of social media. 🌺
I would have been there too, if I lived close. What a wonderful garden you have, and so fun that you could share you hard work with fellow gardeners. I love that they brought fun gifts too. This was a great video going over questions people asked.
What a great event for those who got to visit in person and thanks for this video for those of us who live afar. Great “highlights” reel. Once again thank you both for all of your hard work and being kind people to share it with all of us. Gardeners are a special bunch!🪴
Love your garden Jim and Steph! It’s so nice to hear highlights from the tour! Your love and care for your space shines thru and thru! Always looking forward to amazing learning and ideas from you guys ❤️
Thank you for the open tour for your garden fanatics. I was so inspired by all the plants and their placement in the garden. So glad you had the Cedrus Deodora “ Feelin Blue” & the Crytomeria Japonica “Dragon Prince” in its glory! I will definitely be looking to add these 2 in particular to my garden collection 👏 Jim and Stephanie thanks for all your knowledge and inspirations☀️
Really enjoyed the open garden! Thank you both for all the work that went into it. The garden was wonderful, and it was great to meet so many other people that watch y'all's channel.
Great info & thanks for the last point about where we are all starting from is different. We started with johnson grass and shallow top soil before hard pan... that hadn't been lived on by anyone, just mowed like a pasture. Now, in our 4th year, we've just had to embrace mowing down the johnson grass & have the vegetable garden in raised beds with 2 layers of weed barrier underneath. Because of the extreme wind, our high tunnel has become my favorite place to hang out and garden.
I would LOVE to buy a print of the painting of your garden! And 7-8 T-shirts are going for Christmas. Love you guys Holly, Griffin, + your ornamental gardenS!
Thanks for talking about the soil and the how that takes time to build the microbial layer. It lets me know that I’m finally headed in the right direct. I’ll continue growing cover crops, laying it out in the bed after cutting it down, then covering it with manure/ compost. This will set the beds up for next year.
I’ve taken the advice to heart for most of my plants I try to under plant to shade the roots. I live in southern Michigan and my plants are doing much better now that I shade their roots. Also I find my houseplants do better jumbled together rather than a single specimen in a single pot.
A question for next Sunday's Q&A: That was a great explanation on why your garden got off to such a great start with the background of its use or non use. I'm finding myself feeling slightly frustrated though. When you garden in an area that is natural sand, NC Sandhills z8a, which can be amended with compost and wood chips, but with natural pine straw dropping all the time from native longleaf Pines, it's a little difficult to ever feel like the soil is very well amended. It's a losing battle to not use pine straw as mulch and for paths. It's everywhere. We have had a lot of success with our garden but I find myself wondering if it would make sense to peel back pine straw in some of the areas and just put down a ton of compost. Then, could you put the pine straw back? Does that defeat the purpose? Thanks, always enjoy your content. We learn so much.
@@michaelmalone8742 I’m not answering for Jim, but I live in the same area, and the needles just fall on top of my compost or compost and hardwood mulch. There’s no way I can keep it off of there and keep it looking pristinely mulched, but the needles don’t seem to interfere with the other mulch doing its job.
To kickstart a garden when mulching with woodchips i would recommend putting down horse manure or something similar first, then just mulch over it , all the bacteria, funghi and worms have a new space to expand , a little "dusting" might just do the job
I've got Summer Jewels Salvia coming up from seed still. I've also still got foliage on my Mayapples and some Trilliums. They get good shade from the Hosta around them. Native Carolina Lilly has buds, really early this year but two bulbs grew but went crispy 😞. North Georgia is desperately dry and hot 🥵
Jim I have a ? About agapanthus. I have several 2 I bought in bloom and they’ve never bloomed since. They are in full sun and well drained soil. Zone 8a NC. I’m so glad your garden event went well. So sorry I missed it. 😊
Wish I lived closer! If you’re ever in the LA area, I can show you my garden and take you to the Huntington botanical Gardens, Descanso Gardens, and the Arboretum. Plus we have Nuccios famous camellias. :-)
Love, love, love how you teach us! Would love to know what some of us should add to our gardens to help the soil. I don’t have a compose bin so I would think I would have to get store bought. But what and when should I get to provide this to my soil. Glad you had a great turn out. Wish I could have attended. I will continue to tune in and learn.
I know it's not Sunday, but I have a question. I am adding a raised bed in an area where roots of a Japanese Maple are exposed. If I cover these roots with soil, will it harm the tree? Thanks for your help, and I wish I could have been there for the open house.
Looks like you had a well deserved great open house. It is indeed v lush looking. Also having a small space helps you protect plants like you said so they can handle, the heat and the cold better. I’ do tell people to grow stuff around their shrubs - even annuals to keep the weeds out and the soil cool. It beats repeating. Here’s my question. I would like you to address how to prepare soil in a new build. I get that one should do the wood chips cover thing. But do you scrape out the tops soil a bit? To remove the debris? I would like to know that.
I’m so sorry that I was unable to attend- I went to my granddaughter’s HS graduation in NY the same weekend! I hope that you’ll invite your viewers again! As I live only an hour or so away and the next Grandkid graduation isn’t for another 2 years, I’m sure that I’ll make the next open garden!! I also hope that you’ll visit my plant nursery and garden center in a couple of years when it’s up and running! I moved across country after purchasing 40+ acres to build this dream! I’ll want your and Steph’s opinions on it when I’m closer to that future date!
Just a general question, as I have a large corner lot and am attempting to conquer more of it by creating more ‘beds’. How long after you spray (Bermuda grass!)with Roundup, can something be planted in that area? I regret having to use it, but every other method I have used to eradicate it…still has to be sprayed. I totally agree that one large bed is better than several little ones. I can walk the perimeter and keep the grass under pretty good control. I enjoy your no nonsense approach to gardening!

Such a beautiful garden! I’m glad the open garden went so well. There is something about gardening that just brings out the kindness in people. 🤗
While I couldn't be there in person, I enjoy your videos - your knowledge bank, your garden, and Holly!
Haha, I was going to stop by Boulted Bread and bring you pastries, but my husband thought that would be “over the top.”. That’s the last time I take his advice on these matters! 😂 I loved the garden, thank you!. Oh, and your son is a lovely person.😀
loving the drone shot of the whole property! it really showcases the garden design
I am so happy for you success. You are the teacher that I never had for my gardening life. Hope to see you in person someday
Me too!❤
A great video for those of us a little far away to visit in person! I enjoyed hearing what the top questions were.

What a lovely event! This is the best side of TH-cam!!
I happened to be in Virginia when the open garden was happening. ‘So near yet so far’ as the expression goes!
