    Thank you so much for adding the Zones tag to your overlays. As someone who lives in subtropical 9b, I often find myself pausing videos of more temperate gardens to look up plants to see if they work in my zone. With yours, I get to go, "Oooh, that looks nice but NOPE, Zone 8 and lower."

    Great episode Jim.😊 Please do more of these closeups of the plants. I straddle the geographic line between zone 9b and 10, so am so excited to find the blue spruce sedum! Didn't even know about it until today's video. 🥳❤️

    Hey Jim. Question: I haven't seen your bee house for quite awhile. What happened to it? I am loving this close up series. The blue spruce sedum is beautiful and I'm excited it could possibly live in my 10a FL zone. Now I just have to find one! Thanks for always including the growing zones in your videos. I always appreciate it.

    I'm in downtown Raleigh. I've found that those new agastache varieties cannot tolerate a wet winter. I've pulled mine out of the ground, potted them and placed them where they get full morning sun down to the crown of the plant. Just another plant that I have to find a spot for full morning sun (like a lot of the herbs). If I dead head in mid summer, I pull way back on water till there is a re-flush of new growth.

    My creeping Jenny, drove me crazy this past spring. It was beautiful but aggressive as hell. I dug a lot of it out. I noticed it slows down when it gets hot.

    We have great luck with creeping thyme. It is easy to start from seed. Yes the first year one might be underwhelmed, but once established it really fills in the edge of a bed. Plus when it blooms generalist pollinators find it quite attractive.

    I have also found the new agastaches to be annuals. I am in 7a Hudson Valley NY. I think our winters are too wet and I had some planted on a very well drained part of my garden. You get even more rain than I do! These do very well in the dry Southwest. Maybe a hint to breeders to work on these further -- they are definitely beautiful.

    In this Sunday Q&A, Jim, could you please explain about vinca problems. Yours are obviously gorgeous. I had the vinca disease in an annual planting area about 10 years ago. After much compost and soil conditioner, I was hoping that the soil would be okay again. I tried vinca in this area again this year. About half of the plants look okay. The other half totally shriveled up and I pulled it out. No roots had even grown. I think I'm going to give up on this but would like your opinion. They are so totally low maintenance and deer / rabbit resistant which is exactly what I need there. Thanks, Jim and Steph... Always great info on your videos.

    I planted vincas this year in a flower bed. I’m in Southern Ontario Canada. Zone change this year to 7 I believe. Mine are very tiny do you fertilize frequently and what is your watering schedule for your location. Mine have been in the ground for several weeks. Hope they grow and fill in like yours have. Was a bit behind on planting this year. 😊 Beautiful garden. Look forward to your next video.

    Your Vinca looks so healthy. I've had trouble over the years getting mine to live long enough to get established; this year same story. I've planted twice and the second flat did better, but still have several that wilted down and died. What's the deal? Memphis, TN area, zone 8a or 8b - not sure.

  • @MelodyHopkins
    @MelodyHopkins 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You mentioned growing groundcovers to prevent weeds, however I live in zone 9a Gulf coast (used to be 8b) and my soil is quite sandy. I worry about keeping up the fertility of my soil because of the sand, considerable watering in this heat and the fact that I live on a hill. I do have considerable groundcovers to avoid weeding (It's too darn hot here in summer). I add some leaves from my river birch tree (the positive side of this tree is small leaves that break down very quickly and the groundcovers don't seem to mind) but I do think I need to add compost/manures to improve the soil. What are your suggestions on continual improvement of sandy soils when you have groundcovers?

  • @lisapearson78
    @lisapearson78 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I always used vinca for annuals because of their dependability. However…my soil has apparently been infected with some sort of organism that causes a fatal “wilt disease” exclusive to vinca. I’m told there’s no way to eradicate this from the soil so vincas are no longer an option for me. 😞 Has anyone else experienced this?

    • @michaelmalone8742
      @michaelmalone8742 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I have. We are in the NC Sandhills zone 8A. It happened about 10 years ago in an area where I always planted vinca year after year. Then the blight happened and I read that it's really difficult to get the soil back to normal. Over the years, I have composted and mulched with soil conditioner type mulch all while planting other annuals that did just fine. I have recently retried growing annual vincas in this area. Oddly enough, half of them are gorgeous and thriving and the other half shriveled up just like in the past. I think I'm going to give up on this plant in this space.

      @@michaelmalone8742 Thank you for your response. I’ve come to the same conclusion. No more vincas in that space. Quite unfortunate. Here in central Mississippi our summers are brutally hot and very few annuals will tolerate the duration and intensity of our summers as well as vincas.
