    Before being made into a film, Ben Hur was a wildly popular stage play in the USA. Some productions even figured out how to have the chariot race in an indoor theater… with live horses. They built a giant treadmill and let these animals go for it full tilt

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +127

      Also interesting note: The author of the book Ben Hur was a civil war General, Lew Wallace. He earned infamy for failing to get his men into combat on time at the Battle of Shiloh, but later achieved some fame for a valiant defensive stand in Maryland against a Confederate army three times the size of his own.

    The best thing about the Colosseums was on very rare occasions was they'd literally flood the arena to make a simulated naval battle, or naumachia for the spectators.
    Naumachiae are thought to date back to the third century BC, and appear to have taken place only four or five times in history. The first naumachia on record, in 46 BC, was in honor Julius Caesar’s quadruple triumph, which ended wars in Gaul, Egypt, against Pharnaces of Pontus, and against King Juba of Numidia. For Caesar’s naumachia, ships representing the Tyrian and Egyptian fleets were set afloat in a basin constructed near the river Tiber. The boats were staffed with 4,000 oarsmen and 2,000 fighting men.
    Augustus threw a naumachia in 2 BCE involving a basin broad enough to hold 30 ships representing Persian and Athenian fleets. A bit later, in 52 AD, Claudius demanded his own naumachia, this one on a lake and involving 19,000 soldiers and 100 ships meant to represent rivals Rhodes and Cecily. According to Tacitus, the prisoners at this showcase refused to fight, forcing Claudius to send down his imperial guard to instigate some blood shedding.
    Must have been a fun afternoon for all (well, except the poor bastards that died during these simulated battles).

    Btw the fact that Gaius Appuleius Dioclese was the richest athlete ever is one of those facts that often spring up in clickbait top 10 lists, but is not actually true. If I remember correctly that 40 billion figure was calculated by some journalist with not history or economy degree who basically said "a horse was worth X much back then and a car is worth y much now" and then he did the math and got some massive unrealistic figure.

    Clearly you've never seen chuckwagon racing, it's very similar. It's got the horses, speed and giant race track. No attacking other people with whips, though. It's been run in Calgary since 1923. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuckwagon_racing It's exciting and dramatic (unless a horse or human gets injured, and then it's horrifying) and 100% worth the price of admission.

    5:11 times like this remind me imperatively , that safety is relative. People say "oh look at what we did before that's considered unsafe now." And they can either mean things we do today will be labelled unsafe tomorrow, or that the world has copped on and gained common sense. But reality is, what we've done with safety, is made it an idea instead of a practice. I don't know about you, but as a human designed to hunt, that isn't made of glass, and we'll used to bumps and bruises, I'd personally consider motorbike chariot racing significantly safer than eating vegetable oil or smoking. I do both those things, but they're ok because they're the acceptable unsafe. It's all relative. It means nothing. A dangerous physical activity is nowhere near as damaging as the most legal substances were encouraged to use,. I mean if safety was a real discussion then the one I'm having Right now with myself wouldn't even be happening. Thanks for listening to my teď talk I'm gonna go home and cry now

    Funnily enough, I’m a writer working on a worldbuilding project in which an Earth-like world reached 1940s tech levels without horses, camels, cattle, or other large trainable animals. This world had to get by on rickshaws and canal boats for thousands of years.
    But come the industrial revolution, vehicles were invented, including motorcycles. And among many other times in this world where vehicles and their operators are much more celebrated than they were in our own history is motorcycle chariot racing or ‘lococycle rickshaw racing’ as it’s called. It’s becoming very popular not as some novel revival of an ancient sport but rather because it’s brand new. This is the first time my world saw anything even resembling a chariot.
