    God it feels refreshing to see someone speak about a game with this kind of aesthetic without an unfunny quip every 20 seconds about how they're "weeb trash", or mentioning waifus or FBI memes

    I love this "Thoughts on" series you've been doing! All of them so far have been games I've either only heard the name of (Kero Blaster, Mr. Driller) or never heard of at all, but your commentary highlights what makes them different and interesting. I'm a big fan of Puyo Puyo, Tetris, and other games with a similar "send garbage to the other side" mechanic to this one, so I appreciate the notice you're giving to it and the other games in this series.

  • @BrickBreakerXX
    @BrickBreakerXX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have to admit, I am loving the weekly injection of analysis I've been getting over quarantine. These are both very easy to watch and have a high quality feel with good scripting and recording quality. I actually catch myself watching these when I'm bored and notice something that I missed or forgot from the first viewing.
    I think the best thing about these videos is that they give a deeper insight into games that aren't really talked about much on the website. Whilst there is a sizeable amount of content dissecting bigger releases such as Kingdom Hearts or Dark Souls, the only time I've heard about Twinkle Star Sprites is on unknown/underrated games lists or people making compilations of Neo Geo reviews in one video. Neither really delving into the game's mechanics or what makes it special on a meaningful level.
    From all of the "Thoughts on" series, this, Kero Blaster, and the upcoming Mr Driller game on Switch have gone from games that would be miles away from my radar to tempting offers if ever on sale. Probably the major thing preventing me from picking up this game on Switch is the crushing sense of awkwardness most of my friends and family would feel if they saw me playing this on my Switch or even just the icon of a petite anime girl on my home screen. If Nintendo could go back to the 3DS way of being able to hide games into folders rather than prominently blare it out to everyone wanting to play Smash Bros, JackBox or Mario Kart with me, that would be fantastic.

    • @BrickBreakerXX
      @BrickBreakerXX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I could mate. The problem is that most people don't know I even watch anime or play "Japanesey" games unless they're close friends even though I don't even watch that much. The only time anime came up in discussion in my family is when they were talking about pedophilia and how gross "anime" is. Look, we both know that does not account for (I want to say) most of the stuff from Japan but it does have a stigma that I'd just rather avoid.

    Twinkle Star Sprites is the bomb. Touhou's tried a similar concept (I think twice?) and it's never quite matched up to the frantic goodness of TSS.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      *3* times, if you count Seihou 2
      Though arguably, PoDD is probably the closest to TSS in terms of difficulty, but it's a lot less refined than it
      PoFV is more polished than PoDD, but is easier as a result, and Kioh Gyoku has a much more unique and forgiving game system. While easy, it's more unique than the other 3

    I remember playing this at a con last fall with a friend and it honestly was one of the best games they had at the arcade there. There was some pumping techno music from another machine that I mistakened for being in this game so I was a bit disappointed in the soundtrack when we played it on the ride home, but my friend loved the game's actual audio. I still get a kick out of how when you choose the first character the final battle is Sprites vs Memory.

    "What can be satisfying when sitting across from a human opponent isn't necessarily when the computer plays pretend."
    I think this is a really tough needle to thread in any game's AI. When the AI appears too "skilled" you end up with situations like the Mortal Kombat II AI blatantly reading player inputs and blocking on the same frame that the player presses the attack button. But an "easier" AI tends to make mistakes that no human would conceivably make. Even a moderately-difficult AI opponent tends to have eccentricities that can be exploited to make the game unusually easy. Basically anytime the AI has the same abilities at their disposal as the human player, it's near impossible to make their behavior appear realistic.

    • @tfwmemedumpster
      @tfwmemedumpster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, however an ai doesn't need to be "human" to be fun to play against. A good ai is one that challenges the player without overwhelming them. It should be just hard enough. Many games solve this by adapting ai difficulty to player performance. The better you do the harder it gets. The worse you do the easier it gets, as to make it fun for everyone. It doesn't need to play fairly to be fun. Of course some forms of cheating by the ai are bad, but not all of them are. Like in mario kart where enemies speed up if they're left far behind. It's subtle enough to not be intrusive, and gives them a way to adapt to your level of skill. Of couse the ai will always make mistakes that no human will make and act in ways that no sane humans will attempt, like the ai in this game that hugs enemies getting to the very edge between hit and miss, but can still somehow dodge everything. And it does cheat by being able to charge faster than a human (particularly noticeable on the last stage) and being able to shoot incredibly fast, killing bosses in less than a second after they spawn. But it's not impossible to beat. Programming "gamesense" into an ai is very hard if not impossible, so some tricks are needed. Sadly the ai on this game isn't adaptive (as far as i can tell) and so the last 2 stages are unfair as the ai has near perfect dodging. It takes a pretty skilled player to beat them because you have to wall the boss. Which isn't impossible as they do love to hug projectiles, but still pretty hard.
      Playing against humans of similar skill level is much more fun, but sadly it's hard to find players for a 22 year old game with no native netplay. The few that play are long time players that are far too good compared to an average person. So the ai is pretty much the only thing you're gonna get sadly

    I'm a Tinker&Linker player. TSS is phenomenal in two player, there's a thrill in the screaming matches at close dodges or recoveries. It's an absurdly satisfying multiplayer game, as the matches go on the waves get faster and faster. Gotta appreciate it being a big CD title they most prominent characters name being Loadrun - that sort of dumb humor the Japanese run with warms me like hot cocoa.
    If you get a chance to play it locally on the same screen, that's when it really shines. I'm lucky to have the Saturn version to do this with (which has additional characters and a cute anime opening.) Who do you play as?
    Oh and if you want something a little cute but mechanically absurd (in a good way) Look at Cotton 2 and Boomerang some time. There's nothing quite like a shooting game where you don't have to shoot, but can instead pick up, juggle and punch your way through danmaku. It's the kind of genre twist that feels like a stroke of genius.

    What i never understood is the use of the level 1 charged shot... I mean, if you use that, you can't pop the enemy in a way that will produce garbage.. And if you need something deadly to clean a lot of garbage... Well it's not quick enough since it needs to be charged.
    Maybe sometime when you see garbage on your way you have enough time to send a charged shot but not all characters have a charged shot worth this trouble. It's usually way better to just wait to pop out your own chain at this moment.

    You’re a big fan of very traditional games with a subtle spin on mechanics. Ever tried a game called Creeper World? It’s a top-down RTS with a twist; the enemy acts 100% predictably: it flows like water. It trickles down cracks and spills over containers so it becomes about crowd control rather than pure defence like most RTSs.
    First one is a free Flash game and is pretty unpolished but gets the mechanics across well. CW3 is on Steam and is super refined.

    I love Twinkle Star Sprites and have for a long time now, and I wish I had someone to play with. Really Till is my girl! I kinda wish you would have gone into balancing more because I feel that some characters are much weaker than others. Mainly it has to do with the special attacks but some charge attacks are pretty much useless (though charge attacks in general are useless). Like Nanja Monja has a great special that really zones you but Kim's is pretty easily avoided. Then there's the obvious like Yan having terrible stats, but I guess it's good to have some handicap characters.

    I do think memorization matters in this genre, but I don't think it's the only thing that matters. I have every enemy formation in Ikaruga memorized but I still screw up and die on some sections that I'm just not good enough to do right even though I know it's coming.

      It is highly recommended to learn all 36 patterns; half of which are repeated/mirrored and while the others are unique sequences. Even if you learn all 36 patterns, it really boils down to execution; knowing when to send Level 2 attacks over to your opponent, drag your opponent's attacks off screen, and ignoring/skipping a pattern to survive.

    This was Alpha Denshi’s last game to be made for the Neo Geo! Does this mean Matthew will review other games on that platform? Magician Lord? Top Hunter? World Heroes? Metal Slug? Any of the King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown/Spirits, or Fatal Fury games?

      I think that he's already planned out a lot of his "thoughts on" series in advance, or has been sitting on these ideas for a while, hence why he's able to make such a high quality analysis in a one week timeframe. So chances are slim of a P&R analysis happening, but Pocky and Rocky is definitely a fun game worth playing to anyone big on schmups, analysis or not.

    We don't see many competitive games like this. The only other one I can think of is rival megagun.

    The first attacker disadvantage actually isnt true. If you reflect a reflected attack back it turns into a special attack which you cant reflect so you have to be careful about when you reflect stuff to not put yourself in a bad position. I'd say its probably in the first attackers favour.

    Ah, you made my day! Shmups are awesome, man. When it comes to versus shmups, there was a recent one called Rival Megagun, which is really good if you haven't heard of it. Would love it if you covered more of the genre in general. I think shmups have timeless appeal, yet they've fallen by the wayside in terms of popularity. There's a lot to explore in shmups, different styles of play, from stage based affairs to just enemies and danmaku, and all the different scoring systems and mechanics.

    My friend and I were browsing the Xbox store at 4 in the morning and found this game. The only information on the page was the image, which was just an intense zoom in on one of the characters. After having a good laugh on what we just found, I gifted it to him as a joke. Now every time we hang we play some versus together with no idea what's happening, and even held a "tournament" amongst a group of friends.
    We didn't know anyone else knew of it's existence.
