Nowadays, polytunnel cultivation is becoming increasingly popular in Sri Lanka. Many young individuals are venturing into protected agriculture as a profitable agribusiness. However, the soaring prices of imported chemical fertilizers have posed a significant challenge to polytunnel farming in Sri Lanka. Consequently, some cultivators have been forced to discontinue their polytunnel operations and explore alternative income sources.
One such individual is Mr Ruwan, an agriculture graduate residing in the Hambantota district. He has chosen to cultivate Muria Capsicum in his polytunnel. To combat the escalating costs of chemical fertilizers, Mr Ruwan decided to experiment with various organic liquid fertilizers. The outcome was highly promising, as he achieved remarkable results.
Following Mr Ruwan's success, Mr Viraj also decided to adopt organic liquid fertilizers for his polytunnel cultivation. By incorporating Fish tonic and Jeewamuhurthem as liquid fertilizers, along with 20% of chemical fertilizers, he managed to reduce his fertilizer expenses by an impressive 80% within a month.
The utilization of organic liquid fertilizers has emerged as a viable solution for polytunnel farmers in Sri Lanka. Not only does it mitigate the impact of skyrocketing chemical fertilizer prices, but it also promotes sustainable agricultural practices. This shift towards organic liquid fertilizers has allowed cultivators like Mr Ruwan and Mr Viraj to continue their polytunnel farming endeavours while significantly cutting down their production costs.
