      What is the blueish gray color you used? I’m looking for that color, and is it by Vallejo? I really appreciate it thank you on your amazing work.

    I've probably watched this vid over 50 times in the last month. I ended up buying a kit and I'm really excited to give it a shot! I haven't done this sort of thing in over 25 years, makes me feel like a kid again, I love it! Keep up the great work! Cheers!

      ModelChili Scale Models hey M.C. It’s been 6 months since I commented and thought an update would be good.
      I am about 90%done with this one. Just need to add the outside decals then weather. It is looking great and I had a lot of fun doing this one. Looks by forward to starting Red5 X-wing next!
      Question: after putting everything together, I noticed some of the grey parts have some black shading on them, meaning I didn’t get them sprayed very well. Would you recommend going over them with a brush? Or would you think taping the black wings and cockpit area and going over again with the airbrush would be better?
      Thanks! Cheers!

    Nice build, and as you say, Bandai kits are so detailed you don't need to do much to 'enhance' them. As for the overspray of the gloss coat, 'Looks like a little bit of armour to me,' or, 'looks like a bit of battle damage covered up by the maintenance guys in the launch bay, before inspection.' So true about not being able to overdo the weathering with Empire's machinery.

    I don't understand why people think that they need to put a wash over TIE FIGHTERS - they were new and fresh and unlike the Rebels had the means and the money to keep their vehicles like new!! Good build and you can't even see the seams.. I have the original Tie Interceptor which is also a snap kit but I have plans to recast this so that I can preserve it's lineage. According to either badgrendels or the American modeler in Japan (I forget his YT screenname -- it's steve/fish/dotnet?; unfortunately I am NOT subscribed to him), the reason for the flat silhouette in the Bandai kits is squarely in Disney's court.
    Disney Co. are complete and utter control freaks. I think all except those of who still believe in the Tooth Fairy understand that basic fact... This is not even a question of politics or faith -- it is, what it is. They have the meanest lawyers in show biz and are driven by money past the point of common sense (and common decency I would argue) in many instances.
    Disney Co. were the ones who attempted a worldwide ban -- OUTSIDE of Asia -- on the Bandai kits. Again, most of us know this now. Only recently, has the ban been lifted -- at least partially for the US. They angered enough of the US Star Wars fan community and apparently we are still the largest market for this "franchise." IF their money-making is in danger, they WILL back down a bit if they see the writing clearly on the wall.
    You can blame Disney again for the silhouettes instead of scale figures in the Bandai kits.
    You know WHY they wouldn't allow Bandai to do scale figures for the models anymore? Under some damn lawyer's definition, a "scale figure" equals an "action figure" for which Disney/LFL has granted ANOTHER license (to Hasbro, the inheritors of the old Kenner toy company which made the classic Star Wars action figures way back when). SO, unless Bandai negotiated a separate license to produce scale "action figures" for their kits, they can't produce them!
    Yeah, Disney wants even more money than they're being paid for the license already!!!!
    Utter bullocks as you would say in the UK!
    (Frankly, as kind and euphemistic as many terms overseas are, I prefer to call what it is... Utter bullshit on the part of Disney's lawyers... I'm sorry for the rant but sometimes honesty requires being blunt when it's called for.)
    Disney won't allow Revell and Bandai to go against each other fairly across the world... They're still trying this tactic of controlled product releases and price gouging even as that tactic is collapsing with other product (movies, for instance, are MUCH easier to buy cross-country at VERY GOOD prices in the Blu ray/4K Blu ray disc era... Heck, I just bought an anime flick at competitive prices through Amazon.uk because the Sony-US release of that film utterly sucked! It's at the point the major movie studios have given up on region-coding discs for the 4K BD format and many, many Blu ray discs are at least multi-region if not open discs, too).
    The general consensus is that Bandai's Star Wars product IS superior to Revell's... Why they DON'T allow open competition is beyond me other than they're trying this business of keeping licensors happy (which I'm personally cynical about)... It's about the money again, folks.

    • @gibbage1
      @gibbage1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats what I heard also. Bandai did not license "action figures" from Disney. Removing the external figure allows them to sell in the US since a full figure is considered an "action figure" but the pilot is not.

    • @tsu8003
      @tsu8003 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I live in UK where we are stuck with Revell who care less about Star Wars than Disney does, hence the reason why they have constantly failed to produce a series like this Bandai one where every model is the same scale! Their scales for Star Wars kits are all over the place and don't make any sense!

    Beautiful built as always. It's funny 'cause I just painted mine last night using the same exact colors. Then I found your video this morning haha. I do agree with you though, matching the colors on these different TIEs is quite the challenge but vallejo seems to have a pretty well balanced range of shades which eliminates the need for mixing.

  • @AvengerII
    @AvengerII 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    @18:35 -- I think the colors are nice. I think they match closer to onscreen evidence and "look right."
    Keep in mind -- in real life, they change paint schemes on military equipment ALL the time.
    They painted American F-4s camouflage during Vietnam (land-based USAF C, D, E-models) and bare metal finish with squadron markings (USN and USMC B, J-models).
    They also paint planes according to basic mission. Interceptor/air superiority F-15s (A-D models) are painted shades of light blue-grey, F-15E dual-role (generally ground attack) models are painted a dark green/grey to make them harder to see at night OR blend in better with the European forests at low-level.
    They paint planes with high-visibility colors for air shows (Red Arrows, Thunderbirds, Blue Angels), senior CAG/air wing commanders (USN service), and for special occasions (decommissioning of planes, commemoration of battles). If planes are going to match colors, it will be within squadrons, not necessarily across the entire service and they're certainly going to paint planes a bit differently according to customs of different countries' air arms. The Sea Harriers for the Royal Navy had a definitely different paint job than the USMC Harrier II's! USMC Harriers tend to have closer to bare alloy-finish whereas the RN Sea Harriers were painted dark blue/navy blue. The Sea Harriers had a paint job color close to what was used for F6F Hellcats and F4U Corsairs in World War II! That's because basic Sea Harriers tended to operate from RN aircraft carriers and USMC Harriers mainly operated from land bases.
    It might make more sense that the TIE Interceptor is painted a basic light-blue grey to help it blend in better into an atmosphere. It's probably an aerospace superiority fighter like the X-wing is, meant to specialize across different environments but probably faster in the atmosphere like the TIE models generally are than the Rebellion fighter types.

    What I like about this kit and the rest in the series is they are all the same scale, and particularly the well established scale of 1/72, unlike the utter mess Revell comes up with, like with the fit-to-box X-Wing, Y-Wing and TIE Advanced set that are all different scales that don't fit any established scales whatsoever! Even the other Bandai scaled models, such as the 1/48 scale Snowspeeder and 1/144 scale AT-ATs are built to the established scales!
    The only issue I do have is the price. Even with the fact that the kits appear to be prepainted I find them to be rather expensive, especially when you consider you can pick up fully painted, fully detailed die cast De Agostini models for half the price!

  • @broderp
    @broderp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I especially like the space ship builds, but doesn't anyone make 1/48 scale any more? The 1/72 scale to me is just too small. The larger scale (at least in the older glue models) had more detail as well. I'm loving this channel.

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nicely done!
    I've always had a little trouble determing what is the right color for the TIE's.. sometimes they look a little more blue-ish like you've got, others more grey.. then there's a difference between on screen lighting and look vs what the models actually look like in the studio.
    I'm also not sure if I want to make it like studio version without clear windows or with the clear windows so it looks more "realistlic"?
    Either way, looks like a fun build you could probably do within a day.
    I have Vader's TIE Advanced X1 and TIE Fighter.. was thinking of adding the new TIE Interceptor and having a go at building all 3 within a day or two.
    Luckily the paint schemes are similar and relatively simple and the fit and finish of the bandai kits themselves are already really good to facilitate minimal fuss in building, it seams.
    Looking forward to Rogue One and what model kits come out. I know Revell has some kits already, but I'm hoping and anticipate Bandai will make their versions which should be nicer, more detailed, and a much better fit all around.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Yeah sometimes you have to decide between how the actual studio model was coloured versus how it looks in the movie, I'm happy going either way to be honest. Well the good thing about the windows is you can paint up both options and swap them out, since the cockpit frames just fit into the body without needing any glue.

  • @cscape1973
    @cscape1973 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The pilot figure issue is a licensing problem. Now Bandai are selling internationally (vehicle kits) they don’t have the licence for figures so can’t include one (no matter how small) in the kit. As for the colour, the TIE fighters were always supposed to be this blue colour. However the colour clashed with the blue screen system used on the first film, so they had to change to grey. They overcame the issue for the third film. Interestingly if you watch Rouge One carfully you will see that most of the fights are grey, but some are blue, this is on purpose to imply an in universe running change to the colour.

    I must have watched over 20-30 videos on these bandai sw model kit, and I like yours the most. The finished model looks sooooo nice. Now I'm looking to buy airbrush with compressor kit. What do you recommend ? I'm not gonna use it extensively, maybe build an 1/72 xwing and the m. falcon or a few gundams here and there, so I don't wanna spend big bucks for professional gear. Any suggestion ? Btw keep up the good work! Subscribed !

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's awesome, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! My advice is to find a cheap airbrush/compressor combo, that way you get a good feel for how they work without spending the big bucks. Then if it's too limiting then you can always upgrade. Most compressors come with a water trap, but some cheap ones might not have a pressure regulator which might come in handy. I'm still using my very first cheap compressor that doesn't even have a pressure regulator but it's been fine for me so far. As for the airbrush itself, again a cheap dual action one is a good place to start. I know you can spend hundreds just on the airbrush alone, but I've only ever used $20 ones. :)

    Hi, really enjoying your videos. I don't use an airbrush yet but it appears you are using one indoors without a major vent system or paint box. Since you are using acrylics maybe this works well since they are non toxic and have no fumes. Can you tell me more about your air brush setup. If I can get away with air brushing at my work desk without any major ventilation I may give it a go!

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hey, thanks. :) Well I pretty much just have my airbrush next to my modelling desk and use it then and there. That's why I stick with acrylics, there's no fumes and they're easy to clean. The only thing I need to be careful about is overspray, which does build up on the back wall over time. The white panel is just a large piece of foam board stuck to the wall, so I can replace it when it gets too dirty. I'm thinking of doing a dedicated video about my airbrush since it seems to be a popular question!

      Thanks for the info! I'd love to see you do an airbrush video! That is my primary concern, to what degree will I get over spray and build up on the walls and furniture in my home office where I build my models.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you get a double action airbrush you can control the airflow so the paint doesn't really spray too far. If you see in my videos I paint parts on a couple of paper towels and it's usually enough to protect the desk underneath. However you will get paint dust in the room unless you use a spray booth. I converted a spare room into a modelling room so I don't need to worry about electronics or furniture being affected! I say just give it a go and after a few paint sessions just check some surfaces and see how much dust is accumulating and adjust ventilation or arrangements from there.

      Charles Boyd to prevent overspray i use an old cardboard box, my current one is a Cadburys delivery case, thats about 2 foot wide by a foot deep and high. It tends to collect the worst of the overspray and keeps my workarea clean. Hope this helps

    Nice build! I was surprised with the amount of preshading you did - when I've seen other people preshade they basically just run over the panel lines, so it ends up looking more mesh-y if you see what I mean.
    Why do you varnish (and prime) with a spray can even though you've got an airbrush?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Ridd Thanks! Yeah you can do it either way, I prefer shading the whole thing and then using the top coat to lay out where the shading shows through.

      @DannyStuart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A little bit late, but I wouldn't recommend it. It'll come out grainy. You could use matt medium or citadel's lahmian medium to thin the black instead and it'll act a bit more like a wash, but it's still not really the best idea to try to use paints as washes- they don't hug the recesses like inks and shades do.

    My favorite TIE design is still Vader's TIE Advanced but I really like the side-view of the TIE Interceptor.
    I know some people might prefer the original TIE Fighter as well but the Interceptor looks like a flying 4-part dagger blade. More menacing. And in real life life I believe it WOULD handle better. Especially in an atmosphere.
    Yeah, yeah. The Sequel Trilogy thus far has had disappointing designs -- even the Prequel trilogy at least had the neat delta-shaped Jedi Starfighters! Basic rehashes from the Classic Trilogy (mostly consisting of recoloring basic TIE's black with red sections) and using the designs that were REJECTED for the original Star Wars feature film -- brick landspeeders, flying electric shavers, and the McQuarrie early concept X-wing as the "new X-wing" model.

  • @FunkMasterFlex3
    @FunkMasterFlex3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What kind of gloss coat did you use? I tried using an acrylic coat and then doing an enamel wash but I think my thinner was too strong as it completely melted the TIE fighter model I had and it crumbled to pieces. Im painting the interceptor I got a red to look like Carnor Jax's interceptor but Im worried about destroying this one during the wash process.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used Tamiya Clear spray can (TS-13), which hasn't caused me any issues so far. I tend to stay away from enamels (mainly because of the smell and difficulty cleaning) so can't really offer any advice about when and how to use them.

    • @FunkMasterFlex3
      @FunkMasterFlex3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely dont use them like I did, destroyed quite a bit of work all in an instant. I spent way to long trying to get the color to look like the color on the TIE Fighter box art but I never could, I really like the color you used for the interceptor I think I'll just use that next time.

    • @Octopootie1
      @Octopootie1 ปีที่แล้ว

      A year late to your question but the old stand by on the rpf forum for the TIE color is Tamiya TS-32 Haze Grey. It only comes as a spray paint though.
      Another option is Archive X paints. They are water based acrylics and they claim the colors are matched to the ones used by ILM when painting the studio models. The TIE color is called Stormy Sea. It's very blue though but under some light looks more grey

      Something to do with Bandai not being allowed to sell "action figures" in North America (Hasbro has that lisence), so to get around that rule they make flat cutout figures.

    I just got my Interceptor started but used oil paints for the color of the ship since I havent got an airbush, the paint application came out nicely, smooth but not as smooth as airbrushed and I added a mat coat but now Im afraid by adding washes the mat coat will peel off as well as the base grey color... since the wash is water downed with thinner... any suggests? Cheers!

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What sort of matte coat did you use?

    • @bantharadio8960
      @bantharadio8960 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      its just a local brand here in Mexico, mat finish spray can. Ive seen people tend to use first clear, the shinny one after decals and paint and then finalize with mat, is there a reason for this?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah some flat coats can damage decals, so my layer order is this: Paint > gloss coat > Decals and weathering/wash > gloss coat > flat/matte coat. This is why it's important to do thin layers so it doesn't build up too much. :)

    • @bantharadio8960
      @bantharadio8960 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can Vallejo Model Air be put right into the airbrush, or do you still need to thin it?

    • @Wild-Dad
      @Wild-Dad 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ferval Lankman - some of these paints go straight from the bottle, actually most can. Just read the bottle to be sure. Tamiya definitely Yes.

    • @Duraltia
      @Duraltia 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Vallejo Colors I've used so far can not REALLY be used in an Airbrush without a thinner as they'll all clog up a 0.3mm nozzle within minutes of use.
      Personally I much prefer Tamiya Colors or rather their bottles because you can just fill up a new bottle with thinner to a "mark" inside the bottle, give it a good shake and spray with it until the bottle is emtpy... All that while still having excellent coverage and fast drying times! By THAT time I'd alrady have had to clean the Airbrush like 5-7 times using Vallejo Colors which is only getting worse the larger the model is you're working on like I'm currently doing on a 1/16 _Tamiya #56020 Leopard 2A6_ I'm converting to a 2A7+ Model: imgur.com/a/GzLRqvl

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vallejo Model Air paints can be put straight into an airbrush. Vallejo Model Color paints need to be thinned. You can tell them apart by the cap colour, Model Air uses black, Model Color uses white.
