Ilott looked a little shaky all month but I give him credit for giving Indianapolis a shot despite having very little oval experience. • @FormulaFox

Fun fact: IndyCar is somewhat responsible for the 2022 Red Bull being so fast.
Adrian Newey's first championship-winning racecar design was the March 85C, which won the Indy 500 with Danny Sullivan and the CART IndyCar championship with Bobby Rahal in 1985. He also designed the M.rch 86C that Bobby Rahal won both with the following year(though he left MArch to work directly for Rahal late in development).
How does this connect to today's Red Bull? Well, IndyCar enver did away with ground effects. While they're limited, they have always been legal since Roger Penske and Jim Hall debuted them in 1979 with the Penske PC7(following the Lotus 78 philosophy of slapping ground effect sidepods on the previous year's chassis) and the Chaparral 2K(following the Lotus 79 philosophy of building a dedicated car for ground effects) respectively.
In short, Adrian Newey is the only active F1 car designer that has prior experience in designing championship-winning ground-effect single seaters. This is experience is also why we pushed so hard for so many years to bring ground effects back to F1 - he knew it could achieve the goals of getting the cars to run closer without hindering their awesome performance. It is not the least bit surprising that Newey would produce one of the best cars on the grid.
IndyCar has stuck to ground effects due to how much they can gain, particularly on ovals, with minimal drag. Since the 90s, IndyCar has been restricted to what I call a "half tunnel" design where the center section of the floor is flat and level with the outer section of the floor, but containing sculpted tunnels leading into and out of the flat section, creating a ground effect wing but without a full dedicated tunnel like current F1 cars. Here's a photo of 1990s Reynard underfloor to show what I mean: i.imgur.com/YQuJ9Pp.jpeg

Anybody who loves open wheel racing would love Indy. Racing on ovals, yes, but also on street courses and racing circuits much like F1. I like it because it's more primitive in the pits, they need to refuel which dramatically impacts pit strategy (imagine safety car laps causing nail biting anxiety about drifting to a stop in closing laps due to fuel miscalcs...) - And the more spec nature of the cars helps it be really about driver skills and circumstances. It is ridiculously exciting, and also really funny. PLEASE keep making more of this !

Only 30% of this season's races are on ovals. I think a season of nothing but ovals would be boring but thrown in every once in awhile they're a nice change of pace. In the US oval racing is a very popular discipline amongst both fan and drivers. It doesn't make sense for a US based series to not feature an ovals at all.

Driving that track at 230 mph with 30 other cars, rapidly changing wind and temp conditions, and 30 other cars has to be an absolute nightmare.

Just a little note on 6:20, not technically a penalty. As the pits were closed, Palou had to simply drive through the pitlane and not make a stop. Under normal circumstances, he would emerge having lost a few positions and then pit once the pits eventually opened. However, he had to later come into the pits before they opened to take an emergency splash of fuel before he could do a full service later, losing him as many positions as he did.
And yes at 9:17, that is a silly tradition LOL. Indy has several😂

Would definitely love to see more IndyCar content, but I'm well aware that it can be as inconvenient to catch for those of your across the pond as most F1 races are for those of us here in the States, so don't kill yourself trying. :D
Normally I go all "how dare you say oval racing is easy!" in response to such comments, but the entire point of the comedy review is to take the piss, so of course I'm not going to do that in this case.
Instead, I shall piggyback off ANOTHER joke to make an informative comment about an aspect of the 500 that genuinely confuses a lot of people who already do understand ovals aren't as easy as they sometimes look: Why DOES the Indy 500 have so much god damn practice?
It's because Indy is such a unique track with such a unique form of qualifying that the race and quali setups are INSANELY different. 90% of the difference between qualifying and race trim in a Formula 1 car is the engine mapping. On road courses, IndyCar doesn't even bother with differentiating between the quali and race setup outside of what the driver does with his anti-rollbar and weight jackers. At Indy, they trim the aerodynamics back to INSANE degrees to get as much outright speed as possible in open air - NEGATIVE rear wing angles are common for qualifying at the Indy 500.
However, when in the actual race, they need more wing to avoid losing grip in dirty air, so they need practice time for race trim as well. Then because it's the biggest race of the year, they basically look at the time needed to reasonably test these two setups thoroughly and then go, "fuck it, let's double it!"
That is in MODERN times, though. Historically the amount of practice time was because the insane amount of engine tuning needed to optimize the cars for the needs of the track - turn 'em up for quali, then figure out how much to back it down to finish the race while still being fast enough to have a hope in hell of winning. And since back then the Indy 500 was about the common man doing uncommon thigns, they wanted to give these men PLENTY of time to work that all out.

I understand why people are quick to dismiss the whole oval racing game and the talent that it takes to master such a thing. Only once you've had the chance to experience it in person will you come to see how fcking insanely fast and terrifying it is. They drive over 200mph and are a mistake away from slamming a wall and easily dying.

I have to say IndyCar is much more fun to watch than F1, it is much harder to predict and I like "~200 seconds of push to pass boost" better than DRS zones :)
With that said I have been following Marcus Ericsson since his F1 time in Caterham and finally he gets to prove his talent with three spectacular wins so far and hopefully many more to come in IndyCar 🇸🇪🤩

Monaco sucked (and has for years since the cars got too big). Indy was more fun. And the Cocaine 600 was might have been even better. More passes in one lap than the whole race in the little country.

I know this is a comedy bit, but I keep seeing this error when talking about Alex Palou.
Palou was not penalized for entering the pits when it was closed. You are allowed to pass through without stopping for service and you will not be penalized, which is exactlywhat the #10 car did.
However, after circulating behind the safety car, the team decided he was at risk of running out of fuel, so they pitted anyways, even though pit lane was not open yet. This is what he was penalized for.

Im an F1 guy not an indy car guy so I have a question, do you HAVE to refuel every pitstop? Surely if you fueled the tank for the 250 laps, plus fuel saving, it would save soooo much time in the pits? I apologise if this is one of the fundamental rules

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, they have to refuel every pit stop but not because there's a rule requiring it. The cars get 4 miles per gallon on ovals so a fuel tank being enough to drive the 500 without ever refueling would have to hold at least 125 gallons.
