The 2024 Indy 500 was CHAOS

  • Monaco may have disappointed as per usual, but we can always turn to the Indy 500 to wake us up again. the 2024 edition of the race did exactly that, giving us a thrilling last lap battle that went right down to the wire! That gives me more than enough to talk about, so here are my thoughts on the entire month of May!

Honestly, Sting Ray deserves some praise, that was a very solid drive. Possibly his best drive in an IndyCar. Gutted for Pato though, and with McLaren coming 2nd in Shanghai (Jake Hughes), 2nd in Monaco (Piastri) and 2nd at Indy (O'Ward), it was a day of so close, yet so far.

He had the 6th fastest lap of the race. And he's driving for Foyt, a team that has always known how to get around this track. They are so good at it, Penske teamed up with them this year, and you can see how that worked out for them.

This was the first time I ever got to watch the Indy 500 in person. The day before I left, my fiance of two years and I broke up. I decided to drive from TEXAS, which was 14 hours (16 including food bathrooms and gas). During that drive I encountered 8 tornado warnings, 5 thunderstorm warnings and a flash flood before hitting Joplin. When I got to the track I learned my parking pass was forged and I had to pull out the stubhub receipt and pray to be let in. I got rained on for 2 hours, fell in mud at the infield in Turn 3, fell AGAIN when I was helping a Brit get his truck out of the mud after the parking lot flooded, and didn’t sleep for over 36 hours. I’m writing this as I head back down I-70 and I-44 with a cold quesadilla in my passenger seat and another 15+ hour drive ahead of me.
And I loved every single minute. It was by far the best fucking experience of my life and I’m already planning on getting my tickets for next year and I’m going to be roping my friends into it if I can.
Indy really is the greatest spectacle in sports and I can’t wait to be back. If you can go, go. You’ll never forget either the race or the people for as long as you live.

After a bit of waiting, NASCAR decided to piss on Larson’s parade some more by calling the race before he could even get in the car. I gave it a go this year on an off chance because you introduced me to IndyCar and through that helped me learn a bit more about the complexities and intracacies of oval racing. Best part is that NASCAR puts all of its races up on its channel for free after I think one week/two weeks, so you can watch the whole thing. They're a little too free with the caution flags and their competition cautions, but tha races are remarkably interesting considering the reputation for just driving around in circles.

Great rundown of the 500, I love all your videos and congratulations on your continued and deserving success. I hope the views are good for your Indie videos as I'm in Vancouver Canada so have followed both series most of my life. Remember though this oval really is for round 90° turns. On relatively low bank. when they qualify it is put to the floor the entire time, no lifting whatsoever and of course to get the flying speeds you need to trim that car out. I guess what I'm saying is driving and becoming competent at this race track is the skill all its own. Oh one other thing we need to organize a violent coup for what they did to Andretti :-) keep it up brother love your content I'm doing a good service, in fact the Indie should be paying you for the marketing you're doing :-)

Another great IndyCar race review! But wow, that was one barnburner of a 500. As far as I'm concerned, the best in a long time. As the commentators noted, and as did I, pretty much the entire field was racing as though it was the last 10 laps from the starting green flag. Talk about 'wads' of cars that you could throw a blanket over. I noticed the 'four cars into Turn 1 won't work' as it happened. And it didn't. SO disappointed for Pato. But Newgarden's outside in 3 pass was brilliant.

What you’re missing about the hype of Larson is that the perception of him is that he’s the spiritual successor to Tony Stewart. That means people think he can win an Indycar championship or Indy 500 along with his NASCAR championship.

This was a phenomenal race! I was really gutted for Pato. I think he was trying to save his pass for the back straight but Josef saw it coming and 'let him by' at the start of the final lap. We were treated with one HELL of a nail-biting battle at the end. Kyle Larson did a fantastic job and was running top 10 most of the race. He'll be kicking himself for speeding in the pitlane, but even greats like Dixon have made that mistake before. Then there's Sting Ray who led the race for a few laps, albeit on a different strategy. It was still a solid race for him. Finally, there's Herta. Choked again, then checked out with a damaged wing.

This years was the worst by far, traffic management was awful on the way out. We camp out from Thursday-Sunday and usually have some dinner at the campsite after the race and then pack up, but we packed in the morning instead because of the rain. On normal years this is enough because by the time we're done with dinner and then packing the site, the traffic has normally thinned out. Doubt it would have turned out that way this year though.

Australia has one oval track near Melbourne call The Thunderdome. Washouts are regular (Melbourne gets lots of rain). On my visit there 30 years ago, they strapped a huge jet engine to a trailer with a deflection plate down onto the ground. This was driven around to try and displace the water. The problem was, the perimeter wall had no drain pipes to remove the water flowing down from the seating. They put holes in the wall to allow the water to run across the track, because the drains at the bottom of the track worked well. 🤣
