personally, my only real issue is that SOMEHOW they didn't think to include the full versions of the 13 games. Would've costed nothing and been a cool inclusion
You know, this is the part where I WOULD have said it would definitely happen since they called this one NES Edition... but I'm STILL waiting on SNES remix so I can't be certain they ever would.
Yeah I saw the trailer and assumed it included the full games but it sucks that it’s only challenges I thought the challenges were just extra content :(
They could seriously make one of the most special and unique game experiences if they went all out. Making your own challenges, having a much larger library of games to choose from, bring some cool Japanese exclusives that are English friendly, any type of substantial extras, let's see a passion project. Let people do stupid and fun stuff like playing with other characters in different games, giving Link a Mega Buster, some real customization just for fun. Fun is the point, right. And Nintendo is smart enough to figure out all the mechanical logistics to make it work. Even the old PS2 era compilation discs went all out, the Capcom Collection Vol. 2 disc has so many cool things you'll only experience with that collection.
@rexhughes21 the new popular "digital artbook" trend is appreciated, but definitely bare minimum. It's not a physical book/manual, a lot of them feel lackluster and basic in content, and even games like the Capcom Collection Vol. 1&2 for PS2 has some of the coolest unlockable art for thenold games, never before seen promo stuff, versions of the characters for different regions/stages of development, etcetera. It all comes down to money and it's sad. Obviously every 1st party NES game could've fit on the cart. But It's also stupid because the more work and the more special and unique they make a game, the more money it will make. Especially in the modern era with instant reviews/ppl dying for new 10/10 games that aren't 3D open world action adventures. We want games with that "Nintendo charm," where every inch of the game is jam packed with fun. Where even the menus do something you've never seen before, and you can get lost in the overworld map playing around, that level of ingenuity and care. Nintendo still makes amazing games, the fun I had with Mario Odyssey was such a great experience when I bougot my Switch. But I wish this new NWC game was one of those "Oh man, everyone will buy this game and enjoy it for years" type of Nintendo release.
I kinda don't get the "why aren't the full games unlockable here" argument. If you're playing this for the online leaderboards and survival modes, then you already HAVE every NES game here as part of NES NSO. You could in theory practice every single challenge in this game over in NSO with rewinds and such. I just wish that every single challenge here didn't involve speedrunning. Like most points or coins or defeated enemies within a certain time limit or something like that. A little variety would've been nice.
Plus, that's not the point of this title either. The NES Remix Games did a similar idea, involving you going through challenges with the nes games included, and those games ALSO did not have the full games either, but no one complained back then.
Nah I kinda get the argument, NSO isn’t a permanent thing for your switch. You are essentially renting the games, if you buy a physical copy of this game, you would have a, theoretically, permanent version of these NES games that you can play on your switch. Anything could happen, imagine 10 years from now NSO isnt even a thing. And you REALLY want these NES games on your switch. Sure, you have other options like emulation. But it still would be nice to have the games in a place that isnt reliant on an internet connection or subscription service. Theres no longevity or ownership in something like that
This is fully compatible with the NES NSO controller as well, like the NES online service. All the prompts and how you can use L and R to capture or exit to Switch menu is there! Also you can tell when it says “Start” button instead of the “+” with some menu navigation or prompts.
I recently started to invest in a proper retro collection with a CRT tv. It’s great that NES et. al can be available on modern platforms, but there’s nothing like playing it with the technology the devs envisioned.
@@to-try-again Maybe not. It does make it a lot closer. Even makes the flat screen TV, look like it has the video curvature of the CRT. I still have one old CRT TV, but I lack the connector for many of my modern devices, to use it without some convertor which might alter things a bit.
I'm "The Wizard came out when I was 10" years old. I'm super excited to get this. If it's a hit they could add DLC theoretically, and it would increase the likelihood of a SNES World Championships as the next step. I think it's a unique and cool way to use the back catalog.
I won a VHS copy of THE WIZARD competing in the Nintendo Championships in a truck in a local grocery store when I was a kid!!! This is 100% down my alley, for nostalgia alone! Born in 77!
The price helped it a lot at least for digital edition if ya don't care about the collectible cardridge and real pins had it not included that i would of said pass.
I really like the look of this. Seems great for pick up and play, which is just what I’ve been after for a quick gaming fix on my 10 minute work breaks.
It’s pretty fun. Not sure I would recommend buying it though unless you get the extra stuff in the deluxe set. At least the full games are already on NSO
The two things I took away initially from this game is our avatars and potentials. The avatar screen lets us select our favorite Nintendo game of all time and the list is MASSIVE including lesser known gems like Clash at Demonhead and Japanese exclusives. It proves that Nintendo is aware of their catalog and could absolutely port these games to NSO or special collection packs if they were willing to work out deals with these different companies. The potentials I’m referencing are the challenges and the games themselves. It’s obvious they can expand on the current list of challenges for the current games they have but since I have the ability to say that my favorite game is Mega Man 3, we could potentially see a Capcom DLC that includes those titles down the line. Even if they’re for sale and not automatically uploaded into the cartridge, I feel like they have an opportunity to go beyond what’s already here initially and they should absolutely make quarterly updates to this game for a small foreseeable future to include all these other titles. Imagine trying to compete in a speed run of the first level of Ghosts and Goblins or mastering the wall jumps in Ninja Gaiden to reach an area before everyone else or being the fastest at obtaining wall meat in Castlevania. They can expand on this concept and keep it reasonable for players and further enhance the nostalgia bomb they’re giving older players and continue to create new fans in younger audiences by simply giving us MORE. Just my two cents.
Speed running in an emulator with bluetooth controllers introduces lag. Did they compensate for that? Also, they should have included full versions of the games, it could not be that hard. Long after NSO is gone, you'll still have your own copy of these games.
The switch pro controller has an extra frame of input delay when in wired mode than when you use it wirelessly. Bluetooth actually has less lag. The switch natively has a few frames of input delay and it's one of the least responsive Nintendo systems. Still this should be more than playable for most people. If you're a speedrunner then you probably aren't seeking these versions out aside from the novelty.
I’ll admit, I’ve not been interested in this game. I’ve seen it, and been like “it’s cool! But I don’t think I’ll pick it up” But now it’s here I’m really curious to give it a go. But the thing I think that’s holding me back is the lack of actual games represented in this. Sure I bet it’s not possible to provide a speed based challenge on a game like, Fire Emblem, but it would have at least been cool to have a pin of Marth in the game yknow? Even if the games can’t be played I would have loved more NES representation - it could have truly been a celebration of Nintendo’s rich history if it wanted to be. I think, if something like this happens in an update, where they represent more games and franchises in the game, through both playable and non playable means, I’ll pick up this game in a flash Edit: I do know that you can select basically any NES game as your favourite for your profile, even games like Fire Emblem Gaiden that’s JP only, but I would have loved more than just that yknow? Maybe a brief history on all these games through a paragraph like Smash’s trophies too etc?
It seems like it would have been cool to have a deluxe version of this that actually includes NES switch controllers and the other NES championship game rom, as well as the full versions of these games.
Bought the deluxe set just for the collection and nostalgia but turns out I am really loving it. I don’t have time or attention for longer games these days as great as they are. so it’s super fun just to have a quick bit of fun with still a challenge.
I was really looking foward to this but I did all there is to do in less than 24 hours of release. Hopefully they expand the online options with more rounds or having more challenges thrown into survival mode instead of the same 3 for a whole week.
I am so excited for this. The criticisms seem pretty fair and I agree with a lot of the comments here too, but overall I know it’s exactly what I want. I hope they add more games! (Not holding my breath… but also… maybe a little bit)
Interesting. They also forgot to mention the classified information for tips which, if you grew up in the late 80s and 90s is a direct throwback to Nintendo Power magazine which was my favorite magazine as a kid 😎
@@MegaRetroRocket They don't own the rights to games that appeared on their own system (the NES)? Or do you mean that they don't own the rights to distribute these old games within this new game (which would make more sense)?

Would of been a good addition to NSO, I wonder if they will ever add anymore DLC, it seems a long time since Animal crossing, splatoon and mario kart DLCs
They should have included a remix section… or an “NES Championship Remix” DLC. That’s the only thing really getting to me. It’s the same games I’ve played so many times. Remix at least gives you some surprising elements and leaves you curious to see what’s coming next. Maybe down the line they’ll do DLC or a new game or something… idk
They not going to mention the legend challenges? From what i saw, some of them are full speed runs of all of SMB1, Donkey Kong and all of World 1 of SMB3. A slight slap in the face, demonsting they could have included all the games in their entirety.
I feel like this is something they could include for NSO members. While its not basically NES remix, the speedrun challenges look fun and can hook you to get better.
I wish they included a complete the enitre game speed run challenge for each title. After completing all the challenges, it would have been nice to work on speed run times for beating each game.
I’m not a fan of micro games. Not that they cant be fun. But i’d find more enjoyment in doing whole missions as crossover games (Like complete this whole section as Link in a Metroid level with different mechanics and a spin on things) as opposed to, “Hey! Run right and collect 1 coin! Yeah! Thats great! Now onto to the next micro game!”
I love this so much. I was born in 89. I have a baby now so not too much time for games. Best game to pick up for 3 minutes. For 30 bucks, totally worth it. Really makes me want to play all these again. And you can, they are all in the library has with your online service. This game is awesome! Maniac mansion is my favorite NES game. Cant believe I was able to choose that for my favorite NES game. That felt amazing to start the game with! Id love for them to have expansions and stuff. But no complaints from me. Not thw greatest game ever. But ill get 30 dollars out of it, for sure.
Wish there was a remix mode like in NES Remix, would’ve obviously been taken from there but idk it would’ve been cool. Also wish we got some more games, survival mode with friends (even if it’s just their ghost) and that we could see our friends times, ranks and profiles on a leaderboard or smth. Otherwise me and my friend have been having a lot of fun, but people have their reasons against this which are totally valid (except that we should get the full versions of these games on here, they’re already on nso but idk I don’t think it would be necessary, would’ve been cool but I’m sure most of us wouldn’t need it)
This is a cool nod to that elusive crazy expensive cartridge from the 90s and I still might pick it up. BUT an NES Remix2 or better yet an SNES Remix would have been cooler.
Has there been any confirmation on whether or not DLC is a possibility??? And are the weekly challenges DIFFERENT than ones already in the game? Or are they challenges FROM the main game?
Enjoy this game, picking up the physics of each game instalment, all the iconic Nintendo characters, and a more in depth appreciation of the past brought to present. It’s the game I was waiting for 🤟
I was excited for this. I'm disappointed it seems less involved than NES Remix. But I still might pick it up. Still seems to deliver those bite sized challenges I can loop through.
I bought the digital version for $30. It’s fine for the price, however, I find it very strange they did not include the entire game of each game featured in this collection.
As someone who didn't get the chance to play the WiiU edition (I didn't buy the thing), I am super hyped to play this as a big retro head. I don't get the hate for this.
150 is a really small number of challenges when that encompasses the entirety of the game. These can't be that difficult to make. It should come with like 1,000 challenges.
Everyone that is saying this game is bad is mostly people that value online gaming vs trying the local co-op/couch co-op gaming experience! I'm playing with my two boys in local/couch co-op and we are having a blast! Playing online is ok but in my opinion the most fun is sitting next to someone else where all the bragging and smack talk happens while seeing people's reactions and emotions during failures and victories!
If the physical version released for £25 I might have actually picked it up, but I don't want it digital and I'm not paying £50 for a physical copy of a downgraded version of NES Remix
"Hmmm Nintendo did the bear minimum, charged $60 for it, the same as a Triple A game, and were not super sure about it buuuuut we rate it a Take more of my money Nintendo/10! " - NL
This is probably more than they want to do for a nso game and I’d rather have an overpriced game than a game that’s impossible for me to premaritally buy and is exclusive to the expansion but Nintendo seems to be against that because major expansion pact content is only things you are able to buy without the expansion
Sounds cool and I'll buy it when I can... but why not make this a bonus for NSO subscribers? This is one of the very few games that honestly seems like it would fit perfectly with the service.
There is so much nostalgia for NES, but for a lot of its gaming audience people grew up with Gameboy colour/ Advance, DS, etc. I hope Nintendo can do more for this audience group. I keep getting the impression Nintendo has been recycling lazy NES classics that were already beaten over the head with it relentlessly. I want a change of pace already.
Am I the only one who's sick to death of NES stuff? They rerelease this stuff so often that I can't get excited when they do it for the 15th time. I'd rather pay 20 bucks for a year of NSO and play most of the games on there instead. Since they're not including full games here, the only benefit I could have seen was owning the games on a physical cart or as a standalone download, but that's not the case. Why not do a SNES Remix style game? Or make a unique NES style game that mixes elements of multiple games into one coherent package? Instead it's basically just a bunch of ROM's that have objectives so basic that they end before you have a chance to enjoy them.
Talking about "visual upgrades", I feel like no matter which way they went on this, you aren't going to please everyone. Personally, I'd rather the intact visuals from the original, so every time (after the first) it was mentioned as a lack of upgrades in this review, all I could think was.... get over it bro. Additional in a game like NES remix, a visual upgrade is expected because the game is a mix-up of classics and generally a "remix" would bring some changes for visuals or quality of life, etc.
Watched an entire playthrough and it's pretty underwhelming. It should be a Nintendo Online exclusive freebie or something, it came off as pretty phoned in
Meh. 🤷🏻♂️ When we know they could pretty much pack nearly the entire NES library onto one Switch cart, but they’d rather dish them out piece meal in the eStore, it’s hard to get too excited about a bunch of mini games.

That wasn't an oversight. When has Nintendo ever done anything that generous? They want you to pay for NSO to play the full versions of these games.
Will be interesting to see if the full game is playable after dataminers pull it apart, or if Nintendo has cut the non-used parts of the games out

They won’t do that because of NSO. All games are there.

Would of been a good addition to NSO, I wonder if they will ever add anymore DLC, it seems a long time since Animal crossing, splatoon and mario kart DLCs
This game shoulve been a new mode in an nes remix deluxe port
That’s for next year, and you missed out super dooper. 😂
Sounds like the reviewer didn't play everything
I feel like this is something they could include for NSO members. While its not basically NES remix, the speedrun challenges look fun and can hook you to get better.
Is everything all timed events?
Pretty sure.
I will pass on this one. Why not using "NES Remix" and improving on the online aspect of it? :(
Wish there was a remix mode like in NES Remix, would’ve obviously been taken from there but idk it would’ve been cool.
It’s the game I was waiting for 🤟
What would a sega world championship look like?
I was excited for this. I'm disappointed it seems less involved than NES Remix.
But I still might pick it up.
Still seems to deliver those bite sized challenges I can loop through.
Speed running game sounds great!
I bought the digital version for $30. It’s fine for the price, however, I find it very strange they did not include the entire game of each game featured in this collection.
I’ll take a wait and see approach on this one. I won’t buy it until or unless Nintendo adds some things to make it worthy of a purchase!
I think it's a pretty good game for what it is,though it feels more like a downloadble game
Why is punch out mother 1 or fire emblem not included and also why not Dr Mario
As someone who didn't get the chance to play the WiiU edition (I didn't buy the thing), I am super hyped to play this as a big retro head. I don't get the hate for this.
When will we see updates and and dlc?
A Remix mode would make some great paid DLC or free with the Expansion
Is online play required?
In my dreams they will release all the nes remix content down the line as dlc
So does it have an online leaderboard or not? Other videos say no.
They missed a great opportunity here. They should have put 500 missions out of 50 games. This would have been a blast.
Well I’m glad I decided against buying this day one, I’ll wait for a sale
Should have ported nes remix 1 and 2
But is it the gold one or the gray one?
Do you need Nintendo switch online
"Hmmm Nintendo did the bear minimum, charged $60 for it, the same as a Triple A game, and were not super sure about it buuuuut we rate it a Take more of my money Nintendo/10! " - NL
It's $30.
Challenges for all 4 NES Mario games are available for this game.
I like this game, but I’ve played FREE games that have more content
like what?
I’ll never understand why this wasn’t an NSO game
Money
Collectors...A whole older generations grew up playing these challenges. So its playing on nostalgia.
A 7 from Nintendo Life for a Nintendo game is a 5 everywhere else 😝
So true
Yeah makes you think to avoid this one
lucky number 7
Didn’t Nintendo already do something like this before ?
This game is going to create a huge bump in NSO subscriptions
But it's not available on the NSO.
Oh, perhaps you mean for online play?
@@rexhughes21 yeah but the FULL version of these games are on NSO which will draw people in.
Couldn't they have just put it for free on the membership games?
This is probably more than they want to do for a nso game and I’d rather have an overpriced game than a game that’s impossible for me to premaritally buy and is exclusive to the expansion but Nintendo seems to be against that because major expansion pact content is only things you are able to buy without the expansion
I honestly would've preferred that they just brought back NES Remix, or even better SNES Remix or something.
Hey now, you’ll have your piecemeal Nintendo scraps and enjoy every pennies worth of it! 😅
Maybe even n64 remix but considering how awful Nintendos legacy of n64 emulation is outside of the Wii I’d rather not
Can you play this with friends online?
She nintendo on my world until I championship
NES Edition
-the phantom thieves
...i swear i heard this on "Vernias mode".
Should have been free with NSO, period
Why didn't they just add the remix and world championship it would be more worth it.
Sounds cool and I'll buy it when I can... but why not make this a bonus for NSO subscribers? This is one of the very few games that honestly seems like it would fit perfectly with the service.
They’d probably put it in the expansion pack and that would turn this from kinda overpriced to sad and wasted protection
I pre-ordered it and I'm excited for this game, looks fun!
I would consider buying it on a sale but knowing Nintendo it will probably never be on sale for much money.
Or by the time it does go on sale you’ll have lost interest.
Meh. I wonder if more players will actually join in, since online elimination seems like the only fun part.
For the record, Getting S rank in Mario 1,2, AND 3 does NOT unlock Mario 35 😂
I hope a super nintendo/famicom edition fixes these issues later in the future
Talking about "visual upgrades", I feel like no matter which way they went on this, you aren't going to please everyone. Personally, I'd rather the intact visuals from the original, so every time (after the first) it was mentioned as a lack of upgrades in this review, all I could think was.... get over it bro. Additional in a game like NES remix, a visual upgrade is expected because the game is a mix-up of classics and generally a "remix" would bring some changes for visuals or quality of life, etc.
Ryukhar has a video of him playing this. This game was made for people like him.
I saw the trailer and assumed it included the full games but it sucks that it’s only challenges I thought the challenges were just extra content :(
Watched an entire playthrough and it's pretty underwhelming. It should be a Nintendo Online exclusive freebie or something, it came off as pretty phoned in
Wish there more games added. Paper boy feels missing
Yes!!
This seems like a step back from NES remix. I wish this had more to do, even just put the full games on here. I might try it out tho
I wish Nintendo would finally move on to the 16-bit stuff.
Meh. 🤷🏻♂️
When we know they could pretty much pack nearly the entire NES library onto one Switch cart, but they’d rather dish them out piece meal in the eStore, it’s hard to get too excited about a bunch of mini games.
with this only being 30 bucks I might actually pick this up
remix is better but this is cool though and the 60$ package is money well spent imo
What I've gleaned from this comment section is, those who want this will get it, those who don't won't and that's okay
