My first car was a 1969 1/2 Ford Maverick. It got me named Maverick in High School. Till this day to all my Buddies I’m Maverick. I ended up building a Hipo 289 with a C4 and a 9” rear end with 3.90 gears. I truly loved that little Car…but I drove it with a 200 straight six that lasted a few years before replacing it with the 289. I envy you till I find another…great Mav Man!
First car was a ‘71 Maverick. Righteous ride . Got it from my great aunt for 800 clams back in ‘78. Totally factory front to back. Keep the mystique alive, dude! Wild horses shouldn’t drag you away…
My father and two of his three brothers had Mavericks back in the day. The middle of the three drag raced his too. I remember riding around in them. Cool cars...
3 months to late but leaving a comment anyway. Very cool car. The Maverick was introduced on April 17th 1969 which strangely was the Mustangs 5th birthday. You can definitely take it on a road trips aslong as its mechanically working good. Just make sure to check everything engine, fluids, brakes lights, tires est. I drove my 69.5/early 70 Maverick from Vancouver BC to California and back in 2014. Went down for the big Fords forever car show. I drove down with friends driving 2 other Mavericks and a 73 Comet. It was hilarious when a guy driving an expensive pearl white Tesla S got excited when he saw us in California traffic. He had his wife asking me questions about my car while in traffic. Apparently his first car was a Maverick. So was mine a 74 with the huge bumpers, but I loved it. Wish I still had it. Mavericks have great body lines and lots of potential. I have big plans for my Maverick. Take care of that classic
This car is spot on. Love the cream color, interiors nice and the wheels just make it the pop. I've allways called this car the baby Mustang. If you took a Mustang and paired it up with another fastback car the offspring vehicle would be a Maverick.
I had 2 Mavericks, a 70 and a 71 both had 200CI straight six's with manual floor shifted 3 speeds, simplest most reliable vehicles ever made, manual drum brakes was the only thing I didn't like about them, I bought a red one for a $100 bucks and it came with 4 slotted aluminum 14x7 wheels in the trunk, I buffed out the paint, polished the wheels with new wider tires, lowered the front 1 inch and always got compliments on it, they were great cars, and yours is beautiful.
Great car! What a survivor! It's great that you're keeping it basically original. Why does everyone seemt to want to fit modern wheels to classic cars nowadays? I'm bucking the trend, but personally I prefer the originals. I hope you kept them. But hey, enjoy your car! And remember we're custodians of these now increasingly rare old cars. No more irreversible changes! Just care.
Love that car and story behind it. Doesn't need to be a drag car.... but could be a fun autocross/protouring build 😁. Hope to see the shirts up for sale soon as well.
nice car! I learned to drive on a 1971 coupe, white with red interior, super basic, no power steering, no a/c, no power brakes, drums in all 4 corners, and indestructible! loved that car so much, keep it original
I’d also say keep the 250, apply some hot rod tricks, an overdrive auto transmission and an 8.8 traction lock. Upgrade the brakes. Keep the AC. Just have a nice street cruiser.
These are grandma cars that she would use to get her groceries or go to chruch with. Not a performance car but I love them. I miss my 1974 Maverick and hopefully I'll get one again in the future. As for that inline six, you could not have said it any better. For me, it's the perfect cruising motor. I only ever took my car out for drives around town and the local meet up. If I may, defintely look into the Ford Inline 6 performance manual. It really will show you how to open those small little engines up and for not much money either.
I'm loving your car dude & I definitely wouldn't be selling it either. So glad you are using it as a daily as you really get to enjoy & appreciate the 70's. Don't change a thing and keep on cruising Brother
Beautiful car just as it is. The 250 is a solid engine, keep the six! There are a few modifications you can make for some more power if you want. You are right, sixes get attention, and they are reliable and easy to play with. Keep driving!
Great Maverick! Used to see them when I was a kid up here in Canada. Don't think I've ridden in one before. That quack bleep at the end was funny! I like how it is in like new condition. I do like watching videos of the custom high hp ones too.
Nice car man, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that color, I lived in Titusville for 3 years until I moved out here to Northwest Arizona and I just bought a 77 Maverick, It has the 4.1 Inline Six in also, IF I were you I'd leave it, they are great engines and they have of power for the little Maverick. Presently mine is Black with Black interior but i'm changing the color to the early-mid 70's Medium Poly Green. I know it's a ugly color to most but I'm a child of the mid 70's and I like it, the rest I'm just going to clean up, fix what needs fixing and use it as a daily driver/weekend fun car. It already has Craiger SST wheels on it but they need rechromed but it's worth it.
Got a story for ya!! Had a 70 6cyl 200 cid, trans went up, (C4) got a junkyd repl, a week later the eng blew!! (head gasket). A Friend found me 2 Mav's sitting... one a 6 cyl, one a V8 Grabber... but! The floors were gone in the Grabber. Man said his son was gonna take the driveline out and out & fit in the 6 banger car... got busy, never did it... told me for $200 bucks I could have whatever I wanted off either car!!!😜 I pretty much gutted the Grabber... entire driveline, Hood (w/ Scoops), deck lid w/ (spoiler), grille, 4 Keystone Classics wheels, 9" rear w/ 373 gears... traction bars, 2 buckets, floor shifter, What'd I not think of taking til it was too late? Front springs! Mine were 6 cyl springs, front end sagged awful w/ a V8 in it!! I used those cheesy spacers in the springs to lift it... 😑 BTW, the V8 wasn't a 302, it was a 351Windsor w/ a mid sized cam!! 🤩 Edelbrock alum intake, a Holley 650 on her... and boy did she run!! Blackjack headers... she was mean!!! NEVER got beat in that car... I was beating everything!! Never raced a Vette, tho... Funniest story was, going to the beach, O.C. MD... came to a light next to a brand new Monte Carlo, SS... (sticker still in the window)... he wanted to race! Morning after the prom, had his girl w/ him,😍 still in her dress, him in a Tux... He wanted to show off for her, by beating this old primered Maverick (which I'll surely beat!) he thought!😉 Dusted his ass from stop light to stop light, 3 times!! 😂As I'm waiting for him at the next red light... I could see him beating on his dashboard, arms flying around! He pulls up, all red-faced, puts his window down & says, whataya got in that thing??? I said back, a 4 barrel!! 😝 Took off, never saw him again!!! It was purr-fect!!! 🤣🤣🤣True story!!
One thing u can do if you want instal a radio, instal it inside the glove box. It’s what we do in Brazil so the radio don’t get stolen, and u can do to keep the old school looks
Had a 1972 red and white 302 grabber 4spd drove it for 10 yrs.. Rust sure did like it but drive train never had a problem. Live on the East Coast of Canada lots of salt
I remember my mom had one a ‘72 or ‘73 not sure she bought it brand new because she wrecked her ‘68 convertible mustang that lost a fight with a semi i didn’t remember it being that cool, but again I was like 5 or 6. Sweet car bro
Im looking for a 71 - 73 pinto I had a 78 long ago with a 69 mustang 302 in it but i like the 1st 3 years the best . I may just build the original 4cyl if i find one
Yeah those bumpers have to go,I have three of these little babies and mine are early models two Mavericks and one comet I may have to start 😀 riding 😀 them again and yours is a beautiful little car and I would cruise it just the way it is, glad it back in the states 😀
Maverick is actually still a Falcon. It was the car that replaced the Falcon, but it is a Falcon. Ten years earlier, Ford produced a brand new car line to compete with the popularity of the Volkswagen Beatle. The Falcon was a basic no frills economy and car. It had a record volume of sales. There were Falcons everywhere. Ford did this again with the introduction of the Mustang, a sportier, fun to drive vehicle that cut into Falcon sales. In 1966, the redesigned Falcon was no longer the cool car it once was. The Fairlane and Mercury Comet were a more popular choice for those not interested in a Mustang. So in 1970, Ford made a marketing decision. They took what was supposed to be the new redesigned Falcon and changed the model name. It became the Maverick, but in reality, it was a simple basic economy car all the things the Falcon was ten years earlier. Marketing the car as a brand new car line was a part of why it was so successful in it's first year of sales, the other reason may be an increase in population, more consumers as prospective buyers for the Maverick. Another reason was that GM and Chrysler didn't make a similar car to compete with it. To be honest, I didn't see as many Mavericks on the streets or parked in the neighborhood as I did Falcons back in 1960. The price of gasoline was not a factor in the Maverick sales in 1970. There was a gas price war going on that year. The price dropped to 25 cents per gallon, down from 32 cents the previous year. The popularity of the European and more so the Japanese small imports really started with the OPEC oil embargo imposed on the US in the summer of 1973 when gasoline spiked at 35 cents and inflated to 55 cents. Later in the seventies, it inflated to 1 dollar, and by the early eighties, we were pumping our own gas for $1.65 per gallon. The price I mentioned was found in Indiana and parts of Ohio and Michigan that bordered the Hoosier state. Those prices were different around the country. Back in 1970, an employee of the gas station pumped the gas, checked the oil level and air pressure , added air to the tires, and cleaned the windshield all for that 25-cent gasoline price. I had experience with Ford inline six cylinder engines, I am not fond of them, and I preferred the V8 engines. If I had to go with an inline six, my preference would be Chrysler's slant six. The engines in the cars I have owned have been Ford 170 ci, 200 ci inline six and 289 ci, 351 ci V8s, a Plymouth slant block 4 cylinder, I don't remember the size. After that, I had three Ford v6s : 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 liter. There is something about the cylinder sliding up and on a slope rather than straight up, and down that makes the engine run better. That is why I liked my V8 and V6 engines better.
So I got interested in this car cause me and my dad found a good deal for a 650$ maverick and me and him are gonna restore it and have it as my first car ever btw I’m 15
