A Brand New Bach Organ: Prelude and Fugue in C, BWV 531 - Contius Organ Leuven

- In 1748, Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a letter of recommandation for the organ builder Heinrich Andreas Contius (1708-1795), a master of his craft, stemming from the Silbermann-Wagner tradition. Few of his instruments, which represented a sound world that is very suitable for Bach's music, survive today.
The Contius Foundation realised a magnificent copy of the Contius organ in Liepaja, of which case and some pipework are preserved. After meticulous research, the organ was built by Joris Potvlieghe (Tollembeek, Belgium), in collaboration with Flentrop Orgelbouw (Zaandam, The Netherlands). The instrument is located in the baroque St.-Michielskerk in Leuven, Belgium, which provides a monumental ambience and rich acoustic.
I'm extremely honoured to be "Organist in Residence" of this very inspiring instrument for the season 2022-2023; this role includes, a.o., playing regular concerts.
In a series of recordings, I hope to share the beauty of this project. But if you have the chance: most welcome to experience the instrument live in concert...!!

Allthough the organ itself is basically finished, the prospect is still waiting for its final glory: elaborate guilded wood carvings! Funding is being sought to complete the visual part of the instrument.

This is a fantastic organ. If you have been chosen as organist in residence , it means that you are a very talented musician. Hope you stay there for the rest of your life like french organist ! I do notice that this organ is not tune to 440 Hz, trying to play with you on my organ. It is lower. Take care, you are very good.

Haha, indeed! It was custom back in the days to transpose the organ part when accompanying singers or instruments at a high pitched organ. That’s the case here too, I play the continuo part a whole tone lower, so the piece sounds at a=415.

Was gisteren even in de kerk om te bezichtigen. Het orgel werd toen bespeeld. De klank is prachtig, diep en zuiver. Geweldig instrument.
Bizar goed spel dit. Terecht dat zo'n organist de Muziekprijs heeft gekregen. En het orgel klinkt echt geweldig, een echt hoogtepunt van de tegenwoordige orgelbouw. Wat een rijke sound!
With a pedal-disposition like this you don't need a pedal-coupler...and this is an excellent performance!
Indeed, the pedal has enough potential without couplers, although organists always wish for something the organ doesn't have:)
