Laurens de Man (’s-Hertogenbosch, 1993) is a versatile and enterprising keyboard player. He studied piano and organ (two main subjects) and harpsichord at the Amsterdam Conservatory with David Kuyken, Jacques van Oortmerssen, Pieter van Dijk, Matthias Havinga and Johan Hofmann. He took his Bachelor's cum laude for both main instruments in 2014, two years later his Master's cum laude in organ, and in 2017 his Master's (with distinction) in piano. He has participated in numerous masterclasses with Willem Brons, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Pascal Devoyon and others, and now pursues postgraduate advanced organ studies with Leo van Doeselaar at the Universität der Künste in Berlin.

The legendary Nicolaus Bruhns, a pupil of Buxtehude and a prominent, though short lived, figure of the North German Baroque, is described by Johann Mattheson as having accompanied his own virtuosic violin playing with the organ pedals. About the organ:
In 1748, Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a letter of recommandation for the organ builder Heinrich Andreas Contius (1708-1795). Few of his instruments, which represented a sound world that is very suitable for Bach's music, survive today.
The Contius Foundation realised a magnificent copy of the Contius organ in Liepaja, of which case and some pipework are preserved. After meticulous research, the organ was built by Joris Potvlieghe (Tollembeek, Belgium), in collaboration with Flentrop Orgelbouw (Zaandam, The Netherlands). The instrument is located in the baroque St.-Michielskerk in Leuven, Belgium, which provides a monumental ambience and rich acoustic. contiusfoundation.org

Haha, indeed! It was custom back in the days to transpose the organ part when accompanying singers or instruments at a high pitched organ. That’s the case here too, I play the continuo part a whole tone lower, so the piece sounds at a=415.
Beautifully played here Laurens, thank you. The great thing about Bach’s melodies, is that I find having heard them first thing in the day, they remain in my head for days afterwards.

Wat een ingewikkelde muziek maar ook sprankelend en bijzonder mooi in alle variaties en ik hoor de gregoriaanse klank erdoorheen gevlochten!
Was gisteren even in de kerk om te bezichtigen. Het orgel werd toen bespeeld. De klank is prachtig, diep en zuiver. Geweldig instrument.

Laurens, hartelijk gefeliciteerd met de Muziekprijs. Jouw spel en omgang met de instrumenten die je onder handen en voeten hebt rechtvaardigen die eervolle prijs, wat mij betreft, ten volle. Koen van Andel, wat een mooi orgel is dit en wat klinkt die ruimte fraai. Bijzonder, als je bedenkt dat het niet eens voor die ruimte is gemaakt. Je zult zo'n orgel maar binnen je kerkmuren hebben, dan tref je het wel !
Dank voor de waarderende woorden over het orgel! Misschien wel het mooiste aspect van het bouwen van dit orgel is om op deze manier het klankresultaat met medeliefhebbers te kunnen delen en hen er blij mee te maken. En uiteraard dat Laurens erop speelt en er klanken uit weet te halen die ik zelf niet voor mogelijk had gehouden; een feest!
Voor mij onbekende muziek, op een eveneens onbekend orgel. Schitterend uitgevoerd. Echt genieten!
