When they flooded the Roman Colosseum from naval battles, the underground levels were not even made yet they were actually using what was once the man made lake from Emperor Nero Palace. Yeah, the Roman Colosseum was built for the people and to solidify that fact the Colosseum was built directly on top of the man made lake that Emperor Nero had made for himself to use. And they actually use the same underground plumbing that was used to fill Nero lake to fill and then quickly drain the Colosseum of water
It was only filled with water early on, I believe only a couple of times, before they even built the tunnels underneath. Once those tunnels were built, they couldn't flood it anymore.
The first Gladiator movie wasn’t too concerned about reality, so I expect nothing less from this one. 1950s-CinemaScope-Technicolor-style Swords-&-Sandals Rome-adjacent spectacle FTW 😂
It was certainly flooded even after they built the underground. All water would then go to sewers - the same to which all the waste from gladiator cells, animals cages etc was going
I might be wrong, but this movie might be the first time a Naumachia (Roman reenactment of a naval battle in a flooded colosseum) is being depicted on film.
I think you may be right. I've seen plenty of ancient naval battles depicted on screen. But never in a flooded Colosseum setting. This is also the first time I've ever seen a Naumachia depicted in scale model form.
It was going to be, but Amazon Prime’s Those About To Die just pipped it to the post, with one episode showing the naumachia, in which they had crocodiles attack the vessels. A bit more believable than the (what looks to be) sharks in the Gladiator 2 trailer! If it turns out to be sharks, I’m walking out. 😂
1:50 the underground passage ways were initialy meant for water but were converted to tunnnels and cages for animals after it got too time consuming to flood and drain the arena
i agree, i first watched it at school for a class term project about the history of Cinema and i think we got to watch that to get insight on the generations of movies before modern times but i do agree with you the movie deserves some love for it being based off a real story that did happen
Fun fact: Parts of 'Remember the Titans' was filmed at the highschool I was attending. The football coach got sick of seeing camera crew equipment in the weight room so he had the team move it outside where it got rained on and was damaged. The school got nothing in return for his boneheaded decision. Thanks, coach!
Fantastic build! Love the wash on the outside walls! I used to be a huge Age of Empires player years and years ago. My wife and I sometimes will just randomly say “Choppin’.”
The Colosseum was designed with a complex system of tunnels, aqueducts, and drainage channels underneath the main arena floor. When these structures were flooded, they could transform the Colosseum into a temporary lake or pool, allowing the staging of naval battles and the display of aquatic animal hunts. The process involved several steps: Blocking the main drainage channels to prevent water from escaping. Diverting water from nearby aqueducts into the substructure of the Colosseum. Raising the arena floor with removable wooden planks or platforms to create a watertight basin. Filling this basin with water, typically to a depth of several feet, creating a large body of water within the Colosseum. The scale of these naval re-enactments was impressive, with ships, crews, and even small islands constructed within the flooded arena. Naumachiae were grandiose spectacles that demonstrated the Romans' engineering prowess and their ability to transform the Colosseum into a vast, temporary aquatic stage
It was very funny watching this trailer in the cinema and telling the people i went with that its historically accurate (the naval battle in collosseum, im not gonna be the one who analyses all historically accurate aspects). They were surprisingly shocked about it. Looks great Mr. Hobby Time!
I’ve been inside the colosseum and was totally amazed how they flooded the arena for mock sea battles scenes … wonderful work matey brought back memories ❤
Dang, that's timing, been in the Colosseum yesterday. Fantastic building. Awesome diorama as I showed my wife drawings of those ship battles in the arena.
They used the corks from all the wine they drank back then to stop the flooding of the tunnels, they were into recycling even back then. 😂😂😂 Always such a great job. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised about two things, #1 it's not like you to forget the eyes on the tiny ship, and #2 after mentioning filling the area with the crowd I thought with your attention of detail that you would at least do 40,000 attendees maybe not a full house but at least 40,000. 😂😂😂😂 But seriously I am always amazed by what you build, keep it up, it makes my Sunday. 👍👍👍
According to IMDB, Denzel Washington will play Macrinus, who became emperor after the assassination of Caracalla. I think Macrinus is one of the most underappreciated emperors, so I hope the movie does him justice.
What about putting out a call to your Patron members, give them a template, and have everybody help make the people to fill your stadium? It would look so epic filled with cheering crowds!
Me pausing the video to Google ship battles in the colosseum😮 I never knew that the Roman's did this, mind blown! 🤯 Thank you for the history lesson, Boylei!
how can you see the dislikes cause didnt youtube remove it for the viewing audience not to see only the creators sometime around 2020-2022 and it kinda caused a problem for everyone else?
You should try making a train set with a bridge that has a monster in the lake below, and make it so that the train has a harpoon and other supplies to get rid of it. If you do this I would be pretty happy :)
We know that during the Colosseum’s first year it would have been technically possible to flood it with enough water for ships to sail. However, after the construction of the hypogeum-the vast network of tunnels and storage rooms under the floor, built during the reign of Domitian-holding water battles at the Colosseum would no longer have been possible. For that reason, it’s very difficult to get evidence on how the flooding would have worked.
I was not expecting a Ben Hur reference in a Boylei Hobby Time video but I'm very pleased to have it! I would imagine Ben Hur didn't much care for the reenactments of naval battles if he saw them as they'd probably remind him of some bad memories
Boylei I watch all your videos on my tv and I love them all! You do great work, and this is actually the first time I've ever gone onto youtube proper to comment on one of your videos. With that said... TRIreme?! TRI?! With ONE set of oars?! You're killin me! anyway luv u bye!
I just completed my first diorama with for a Funko Pop Fallout Power Armour pop. It's got a crumbling concrete wall and using red LED filaments for a Nuka Cola neon sign and some white ones for a barrel on fire.
I think the ships could have used a more "dynamic" pose, perhaps one ship at angle as if trying to begin a boarding action. Also, some foaming action around where the oars dip into the water would have helped sell the action.
The colosseum had just a few naval battles at the beginning before they constructed the hipogeum, after that, naval battles were made close to the Tiber.
Love the small scale. If you want to do smaller... I highly recommend 1/3000 once. Building alot in this scale and I think I can help you out with same interesting things.
Could you imagine being part of the gladiatorial rehearsal crew?!? Born just to be the equivalent of a red shirt from Star Trek. The most expendable crew in Rome. 😧

That’s awesome
Yes! I remember now, it was even named for the colossus of Nero, right?
Thats awesome! I wish that I had that kind of knowledge just on hand like that.

It's not even certain the Colosseum was ever flooded. However, no one lets facts get in the way of a good story 😊
It was certainly flooded even after they built the underground. All water would then go to sewers - the same to which all the waste from gladiator cells, animals cages etc was going
The ripple water effects made this so satisfying. I'm not sure why they feel so noteworthy here as opposed to the other times you've used it
someone probably asked what he uses for the ripple

I'm glad to hear somebody remembers the Titans, that was a good movie that tends to get overlooked a lot.

Crazy that Boylei HT is more accurate than the new movie

As someone who has played Age of Empires II for 25 years, I approve the ships. Just don't forget your upgrades. 😂

According to IMDB, Denzel Washington will play Macrinus, who became emperor after the assassination of Caracalla. I think Macrinus is one of the most underappreciated emperors, so I hope the movie does him justice.
So basically, Hollywood is playing with "history" to fit the "modern audiences"

The Roman’s used flex seal 💪to stop the colosseum from flooding.
