I'll also show you my favorite way to swatch it in my favorite watercolor journal, how I store my fountain pen ink and what gorgeous mixed media art you can make with it!! So many great art journal and art ideas in this video , I hope it inspires you to maybe give drawing and/or painting with fountain pen ink a go!

    As a fountain pen user, I am interested to see someone with a completely different take on 'our' inks. I am green with envy at your artistic abilities. FP users like inks with some of the properties you mentioned and we also like sheening, shading and in some contexts shimmering inks. Most of us are users of bottled ink, not cartridges and this whole pen and ink thing is one of the biggest rabbit holes out there. Ink makers like Diamine, Robert Oster, Akkerman, Herbin, de Atramentis, Lamy, Sailor, Iroshizuku, KWZ and Colorverse are just a few names in hundreds. Just search on TH-cam and you'll get a peek at the madness. The most notorious ink is Noodler's Baystate Blue and probably the most amazing ink is Herbin's Emerald of Chivor. A lot of us have a disturbing number of syringes around the house as a preferred tool for ink transfer😁

    Yes, I just started drawing with ink and dip pen...I have a glass dip pen, and I am so proud. Love it. Grewing up in Germany I had expierenced writing with a fountain pen, I learned writing handsript with it. Drawing is new and excityting, sure mor to come. Sadly it's rather expensive and hard to find the right paper.

    Noodler's is my favorite ink, my mother in law paints and does wood carving and we share big bags of Interference mica powders that shimmer so beautifully when a little is added to a Noodler's ink( any color combination your heart desires really) u.s art supply are the best powder pigment store on Amazon bc they mix well and I use that mix in a bent nib calligraphy fountain pen cartridge converter without any problems.

      Ooooh, thanks so much for the info Halley!

    • @Reading-inkyfun
      @Reading-inkyfun 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course! We get a 3.5 oz bag of color for like $10 and have 4/5 of the Interference colors. You can add more pigment if you are using a dip pen.(too thick obviously will clog fountain pen feeds). I actually added a tiny bit to a mix of "polar blue" and "polar purple" and put it in my lamy safari with a medium nib(z24 cartridge converter) and it looks like a sparkly gel pen when used on all the papers I've tried today.
      Have fun playing with a new way to enjoy your favorite ink.
      Ps. Noodler's "Nikita Kruchev "(sp) is another gorgeous deep blood red ink and you can get it in the 4.5 oz bottle with a free Noodler's "Charlie " eyedropper filled fountain pen( fine nib real ebonite feed) I recommend washing ONLY the feed with a little baby shampoo and warm water before use if you want it to go immediately. If not just fill it and leave it nib down for about 5 mins and it will saturate the ebonite feed eventually.
      If I could figure out how to send you a picture through yt I'd show you my ink examples.

    What kind of ink is it that bleeds up through layers? I remember using an ink spray once and no matter what I put on top, the color would seep through. I ended up having to paint over the whole thing in black gesso and I've been too afraid to see if it's truly covered up yet 😂 I did get my first glass dip pen recently and those things are so cool!

    • @KarenCampbellArtist
      @KarenCampbellArtist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Probably Dylusions spray is what you're thinking of! These will do the same, unless you grab a permanent color. Another reason why I dont use these as a base in my Hamburger system, you just end up fighting with them the whole time. They like to be the main event!!! Maybe just a little color pencil on top!

      Alcohol inks are in their own category!! They only couple with a few choice friends, are a very different product and have very different behavior and to be used on ONLY non-porous surfaces.

    • @MaggieValera
      @MaggieValera 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

       @Karen Campbell MIXED MEDIA Good to know, thank you.
      Btw, I've been trying to figure out the best way to have a large art journal like yours, without busting an already strained budget, then a creative lightbulb went off over my head when I figured out where the largest size paper intersected with the least amount of money.
      I bought a Canson XL 11"x15" watercolor pad for under $10. I'll use some PVA to turn it into a watercolor block, so it will keep it from warping before it's finished and dried. On the end where the cover is connected I'm going to use a ruler as a template to mark off the last inch, essentially making the usable surface 11"x14", as well as using the ruler as a template to drill holes through the book. When all the pages are done, I'll put a screw up through the bottom, use a 1" wide wooden slat over the top that I will bolt down, and then attach an 11"x14" canvas board to the cover, which I will also paint on. The cover will move, but the spine which is now bolted down like a book press won't. If need be I can secure it further with a few small decorative hinges.
      Then as I finish additional watercolor pads, I can just add the new pages by simply unbolting the cover, putting the new page on top, then bolting the cover back on.
      Thanks for all you show us on your channels, I've learned so much. And now that I've figured this part out (along with getting a giant Pitt pen, a Pentel pocket brush pen, and some water-soluble oil pastels, there's no stopping me!
