  • This is a simple video outlining the procedures for replacing the oil pressure sending unit on a GM 3.8L series 2 engine. This particular engine is in a myriad of General Motors vehicles like the Impala, Bonneville, and GM mini-vans. A leaking oil pressure sending unit seems to be a very common problem for these automobiles fitted with this engine. This video coupled with your repair manual should give you the information needed to take on this project successfully. Have fun and be safe!
    Torque specification for the oil pressure sensor on this vehicle, 2001 Pontiac Bonneville, is 89 inch/ lbs.
    Note: torque may differ from vehicle to vehicle.
    Here is a link to another video going further into the location of the sensor.

    Everyone and anyone who makes videos on TH-cam showing how to install something or make repairs on a car needs to watch this video! This is the way a video must be made!! No kidding! The goal of this video was very precise: install an oil pressure switch. The video took an ample amount of time to show the new part, and explain what tools were needed to get the job done. Then the cam focused on the part and the mechanic installing the part. The amount of time to complete the job was just right. There was no time wasted. I have watched 35 minute videos on how to install a simple part that does not take much time. No rambling on and on here. Also, did everyone notice that there was no obnoxious music playing during the video.

    Saw some videos before, and was ready to take some plastic off, get dirty, crawl under the car, etc, etc.. First I tried to locate sensor.. Took off front (right) wheel. Looked under plastics, here, there, and nothing. I had an oil leak so I followed oil stains... It was just by the oil filter, and it was in front of my nose, hitting me in the eyes ;) .. Really easy, I didn't have to get under the car, and I didn't have to remove any plastics.. And I used 1 1/16 deep socket to remove it. Good video dude.. Thanks.

    I did one yesterday. Super easy. I placed car on ramp and took out oil filter after draining oil. Need an oil change any way. Used an open end wrench.
    Sensor was causing computer to turn on oil light randomly at idle and also sometimes showing 120 psi on display console 😮. It was the sensor and not an oil pump. 😊

    Hi. I noticed in your video that the oil pressure sensor was not snugged down to the engine. Does it only go in that far? When I looked at might there was also a tiny gap, like it wasn't screwed in all of the way. No oil was leaking out of it. When I put the new one in it doesn't need to be turned all the way in tight to the engine? Thanks!

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don't have to screw it in until nut meats the engine. You torque it down to the torque specification in your manual. The threads on the sending unit are tapered so it gets harder to turn as you screw it in. It also seals as it gets tighter. Just torque it to the specification in your manual and you should be fine. Just check for leaks afterward.

    Recently the oil pressure on my 3800 II has increased to approximately what you show at the end, after reading right at 40 psi for years previously. My car's gauge has no numbers between 40 and 120, just hash marks. Does the ECU monitor this, and shut down the engine if it gets too high? My engine has occasional shut downs during idle.

Car runs perfect as usual. Oils been changed around 2000 miles ago so I don't think it's that. Could this be the issue? It doesn't appear to be leaking but I really haven't looked at it yet. Thanks.

    My Pontiac Bonneville 2001-started with oil pressure going to zero when at a light. While driving-pressure normal. Took it to my mechanic-found oil leak-replaced sending unit. However he said when he took it for a test drive, it went down to 30 1x. Told me to keep an eye on it. As if it does it again-I may need oil pressure pump. He also advised-this could be a problem since my car only has 100,000 miles. And he may not be able to find this item/engine assembly. Since Pontiacs aren't made anymore. Also if he did find one-the chances are that auto-would more thn likely have a lot more miles on that part. Any suggestions-worried?

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Deborah Domenici I'm pretty confident you can get an after market oil pump for your vehicle. Now, if you have actually have had an oil pressure problem there is a chance that engine damage has already occurred. That being said 30psi actually sounds good. Not sure why this is a concern. I don't remember what the specification is but 30 should be good.

    • @ColdWarVet607
      @ColdWarVet607 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The spec for 3800 Series II engine is 414 kPa (60 psi) at 1850 RPM. I don,t know what it is at idle, which can be 750-1000 rpm depending on engine temperature. The phrase "keep any eye on it" when dealing with oil pressure is not what I'd like to hear from my mechanic. Keep any eye on tire pressure yes, keep any eye on oil pressure no. On the highway losing oil pressure - good bye engine, 30 mph on street , jamb brakes and turn off engine, call for a tow.
      It could be a wire or connector contact issue, or at 100K miles your oil sump screen could be clogged, or sludge. I hope it worked out for you

When I removed the intakes it did have a lot of oil sludge build up (brother n' law never kept up on the oil changes). I went as far as to blow compressed air through the oil filter adapter and the pressure gauge maxes out around 13 psi. Not sure if there is a restriction in the oil sump pick up tube, timing cover or engine block or all 3.
