😂😂😂🤣. Facts! But you know what, lookin back I’m just glad we came up in that era where you actually listened to the radio & went out & bought records. So in that regard, I’m grateful my mom, her sister & my cousins were all buyin records. It’s like the music spoke into their lives. So you flash forward to today & it’s like....what!!!?😳 Mumble rap? Wap? 🤐😬. So shout out to these folks like Just Jammin checkin music from before their generation & connecting on a deeper level, in this cancel culture age we in.
Just Jammin': all you have to do to get a feel for the era in which this music released is look at the photo behind you. Note the well groomed, tastefully dressed and respectful demeanor of this band. No attitude, no defiance, no apparent anger. Yes, it was like that once. I lived it.
This is the best known song from DeBarge one of my favorite groups growing up. Their upbringing in Detroit was crazy you gotta check out their Unsung episode. James DeBarge was married to Janet Jackson and their brother Bobby DeBarge was the lead singer of Switch (I Call Your Name, You'll Never Be) and other brother Tommy DeBarge was a member of Switch too. El Debarge is one of the best falsetto singers in the R&B music game.
This song was sampled by Mase & his group Harlem World for their 1999 debut single “I Like It.” DeBarge is indeed siblings. They got started through their older brothers Bobby & Tommy who were members of the 70’s group “Switch.”
My boyfriend came to pick me up & my brother said *"Jordan, sum El debarge lookin nigga out here for you"* i instantly thought of this song so I'm here lmfao. This is a whole mood, so smooth & relaxing. Just listen, close your eyes & vibe. I love them 4ever & always. (I'm laughing hard AF thinking about what my brother said, he really does favor el debarge lmfao) #STRAIGHTCLASSIC #LEGENDS
El Debarge's album released in 2010 is the best R&B album I've heard in a long time!!!! Please react to that, you will not regret it, I promise you!!! Its the type of album where you dont have to skip
Obsessed with this band! I grew up listening to them. I was crazy about them back in the day and I’m crazy about them now. What an amazing group with so much talent.
Back when you would record all your favorites on a "cassette" tape.. then play "I like it "20 times in a row... music just sounde so good and just moved you...
Listen to Guy - ”I like” again. A few lines of theirs refer to this song. If you hear this DrBarge first, then Guy you’ll pick it up. Both smash hits! ✨🤍🤎✨
DeBarge was it during the 80's! If you like DeBarge, You really need to check out an up-coming group..."The RoneyBoys" singing DeBarge! They are young and up-coming, but are under the direction of Terri Lewis and Jimmy Jam, while being managed by their parents! Check out "I Like It" (cover) by RoneyBoys !!
I see you already checked All This Love, which I believe was their 1st release single, then this one, Time Will Reveal, & Love Me In A Special Way. But I think ‘Rhythm of the Night’ was their biggest hit, as far as having a video in that 80’s era & gettin more of that mainstream crossover play. You should look up their story on Unsung. They have been through hard times on the real side.
They were family. Brothers & sisters. They also had 2 brothers, Tommy & Bobby DeBarge that were in a group called “Switch.” Good music definitely! Their brother, Bobby died from HIV, back in the 90s or late 80s. & recently Tommy DeBarge died about a year ago. Loving it that you’re finding the DeBarge Family. They made good music! Love ya!!!
Awesome group. Loved them growing up. Man what a talented family. Just like The Jets. Anyways, nice to see a young guy like you appreciating this music.
They added James to the All this Love Album...but, he wasn't on their first album "The Debarges" with them on the cover holding telephones. It was only four of them then.
They were marketed to be the next Big Family Group after The Jackson Five but as the saying goes, The Best Laid Plans Of Mice & Men go astray. They were the Golden Children of Right On, The first African American Teen Magazine along with The Original New Edition in the 1980's. Their Brothers Tommy & Bobby were in Switch. They did this Song on American Bandstand in 1982 and then in 1983 they made their National Debut on Motown 25 but I knew they weren't going to make it. During the beginning, James messed up slightly on The Choreography and Motown was legendary for that. Their next big smash was "Rhythm Of The Night" written by Diane Warren who is probably the Biggest Female Songwriter of This Generation. She's written Hits for Aerosmith, Trisha Yearwood, Leanne Rhimes, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton and All 4 One amongst others. Sadly by 1985 they were all but finished. They had problems with keeping a proper Schedule, and Drugs. El was so desperate for Change he gave up his Catalogue which means when it's played on R & B Radio he doesn't get "Paid" which is sad considered that many folks have "Sampled" his Songs. Sadly enough him, James, Chico, and Bobby who was Bisexual and Died of aids all did time in Prison. James was married to Janet Jackson for a hot minute and Bunny was a prescription Drug Addict. If you can read about them in Vibe Magazine. Ironically Eldra aka "El" is an ordained Minister of The Pentecostal Church.
Don't mean to be funny, but I knew you would like it! DeBarge is truly a talent family group, consisting of all brothers and sisters. I see you also reviewed "A Dream". "Love Me In A Special Way" and :"Stay With Me" but and you should heck out their biggest hit "All This Love" th-cam.com/video/AXZ5HvjkaJ4/w-d-xo.html, "Who's Holding Donna Now"," as well as their showdown with High Inergy on "Motown 25": th-cam.com/video/tfoK8uzfKkQ/w-d-xo.html. Also, their older brother hit it big with Switch, which had a big hit with "There'll Never Be" th-cam.com/video/HkADoYdKt-Q/w-d-xo.html and their younger brother Chico DeBarge had a solo career (check out "Talk To Me" th-cam.com/video/rcFBo8vIGRc/w-d-xo.html).
It’s the “ I like the way you comb your hair, I like those stylish clothes you wear, it’s just the little things you do that show how much you really care” part . Other artist have been interpolating in their songs. Wrecks on Effects, Beyonce , Lloyd , Guy, and on
share my world is great by them as well as time will reveal, queen of my heart, all this love, whos holding donna now, you wear it well, the heart is not so smart and many more. I suggest you listen to all of the albums front to back its harder to find a song that isnt good from them. I also suggest you check out switch which if im not mistaken was the 2 brothers from this band along with some others.
El Debarge close to 60 can still hit those notes spot on.😎.
Love DeBarge. You're right, they're all siblings. Their older brothers Bobby and Tommy were in the group Switch.
James Ingram's brother Philip was in that group Switch with them too
Bobby was also part of DeBarge
God blessed the whole Debarge family with great voices. They were the GOAT BACK IN THE DAY.
It’s sad that I sound like my parents when I say “they don’t make music like this anymore” 😂😂😂
lol, but it's true though!
I think its really true these days - 2010s were abysmal for music in my opinion
Lol right. So true

Randy DeBarge played the bass guitar on this track. I've heard he was tutored by Detroit bass player's like Wayne Brathwaite etc.

The moments you recognized pieces of the song had me. They are one of, if not the, most sampled group.
Grand Puba #brandnubian sampled the I like it - on his solo album
And let’s give some credit to Jermain Jackson. For his belief in the group
janet was married to James, the guy sitting with his sister's hands on his shoulders
The best music came out between 75 and 85

They added James to the All this Love Album...but, he wasn't on their first album "The Debarges" with them on the cover holding telephones. It was only four of them then.
And some live video's of El Debarge singing today. He is 56 and still sounds like this.
