Shaun, I think it's very cool that you challenge yourself and read books that you anticipate NOT liking. That's a very mature way of approaching reading!
Correction: the bookstore owner's favorite book by Dostoyevsky is NOT "The Idiot", but, depending on the translation, "The Demons", "The Possessed", or "The Devils". He thinks the prose of that book far exceeds anything else he's written, though everything else he wrote is good as well. He recommends "The Idiot" more to people starting out on Dostoyevsky, because he thinks it's a bit easier to read for beginners.

There's a very good TV version of Cranford made 2007-9. Well worth trying, if you aren't sure about your choice or want a taster before you dive in.
