In Today's video Dr. Becky explains the differences between Trauma focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) to help individuals process and overcome trauma. Dr. Becky also discusses the pros and cons between both approaches.
Both approaches help individuals process the traumatic event, but Trauma focused CBT focuses on helping the client become desensitised to the event/ story through talking through the event, whereas EMDR is done using bilateral stimulation, through imagining the event.
EMDR is often a quicker approach than Trauma focused CBT, however, this does not always mean EMDR its most suitable for the client.

EMDR is the most effective…… I have multiple PTSD and have been through talk therapy… Although it helps him nothing worked the way Emdr did… I had to stay focused on myself, my experience in the moment taking myself back to those incidents and come out of it… Yes there is some processing time afterwards but Has been making all the difference in my life for the better

I had a therapist who had me start tapping on myself every time I got emotional in therapy. I found it very distracting and annoying. It stopped me from talking about what I needed to talk about. I ultimately ended up feeling like she was distracting me because she couldn’t handle hearing about my trauma. At the end of a session where I finally let something big out, she prompted me to hug her at the end of the session. I ended up feeling like I was comforting her. I fired her that day. I went back to the therapist who had stopped being covered by my insurance and told her I needed to get this stuff out without the BS. We did a more straightforward CBT approach, but also discussed events that were bringing up the memories in my present life and how to handle them differently. It was hard work and took a lot of time and $$$, but so worth it. I’m having a relapse in symptoms 15 years later after a string of traumatic events, and all I can find are therapists who use EMDR or some newfangled version that’s supposed to be even faster and easier. It all seems like hocus pocus to me. I need a therapist who is willing to let me do it my way.

Cpt is tough. I'm 4 weeks in and crawling out of my skin. I wear a fitbit and my usual hr is about 60, I'm clocking 128. And my anger and anxiety are 15 out of 10. At this point I feel like I was better off just being how I was before. Now I am in the point of of obcessing on the trauma. Non-stop.

Hi really appreciate who you are and what you do. I've been through hell .. and attest that no one needs to accept mental suffering today. Seek love, understanding and kindness ... inclusive of bringint the willingness to start the process.

Although it's a psychotherapeutic protocol in the NHS and recommended by NICE, for ptsd, I've found in my career as a high intensity nhs therapist that not many therapists know about it. It is called Cognitive Processing Therapy CBT derived, where a trauma narrative is generally not used, no exposure either. It focuses mainly on the trauma impact, after the event, and stuck points. I've found it less distressing than both EMDR and CT for PTSD.

Thank you!! I was confused which to choose. Apparently I like to process my emotions by talking and CBT seems to be the right treatment for me.
