    Brad, i bought a bag of junk jewelry from goodwill and aside from the scrap silver, there was a set of pearl necklaces that were clearly fake. The skins were pealing off the pearls. But guess what? The big square clasp, with the five diamonds. Yep. That was real. At some point in the past, someone had replaced ghat clasp. Joy.

I enjoy watching your videos. Would you be willing to share your knowledge about the designers and what you look for to authenticate the gemstones and precious metals? Thanks for sharing.

    • @threefortytwo23
      @threefortytwo23  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the nice comment! Yes, I'd like to post an update when I finally settle on where to get this appraised. I need to make it happen tomorrow. A video showing who to buy and why would be fun, sure, I can probably do that. The gemstones I usually take an educated guess on after using a gemstone tester. Diamonds are easy to test, the other plethora of stones, not so much, need professional equipment and training. Metals are straightforward using acids or a few other inexpensive test methods. Plenty of YT vids on that subject I think. I would love to purchase an XRF analyzer, but who had 12 grand lying around for one? hahah. I'll think about a an educational/designers video and see what I can do. :)

    That is a heck of a find Brad. Been watching all the Hoover Boys vids. I"m in DC area. Dont do much relic hunting these days, though I have a nice collection of Civ War stuff I dug years back, mainly west of DC in the Harpers Ferry area. These days I hit the thrifts. Goodwill, Salvation Army mainly. Question for you - do you look for mid-century stuff? I have good luck with that - easy to sell on craigslist. I keep an eye out for teak furniture, especially Danish. Bought a magnet a while back, but I haven't gotten the hang of the jewelry stuff. No doubt I've walked past some nice stuff.... Happy hunting. Rand/DC

    • @threefortytwo23
      @threefortytwo23  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Rand. I don't have a great eye for mid-century, unless we're talking jewelry. Goodwill's can be decent, I never have luck at Salvation Army, bu they aren't on my usual hit list. Congrtats on your civ war finds, and good luck urban THing!!! Thanks for the comment.

      I received a couple verbal opinions from knowledgeable people and decided to leave at that for now. Even with paperwork these things can take quite a while to find a new home. I think I have it listed for 8K which is reaching a bit. Would take probably half that if the offer came along. Thanks for the question!

    • @threefortytwo23
      @threefortytwo23  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gold? Color, weigh, construction, surfaces, experience. Diamonds? Trusty Presidium Multigem tester that fits in my pocket :) Yes, if I want to figure the karat, I will have to either acid test, or find a jeweler with an XRF analyzer that can scan it. I'm not keen on scratching this, but I might... I'll be surprised if it's less than 18K. I need to forge a relationship with a local appraiser. Working on it...
