  • I made a concrete countertop and concrete backsplash as part of my kitchen renovation! Because I wanted a more subtle look, I also added a beige colorant to the concrete counter. Check out the whole process from pouring, setting, and finishing in the video. Shop diyconcrete.com/ for your next concrete project!

    Very cool!! I love the channel. I'm a totally diy-er lol. Not sure how to say that. But I work on everything in my life myself. Lawn mower stops working. I fix it, car acts up, I fix it. Faucet starts leaking, I fix it, ceiling fan stops running, I replace, or fix it! I think you get the point. I've also spent the last 5 or 6 years building out my woodworking shop. Anyhow I love the kitchen. The counters are amazing! And the backsplash turned out pretty cool as well. With all that said, if it was my kitchen I would have done a dark grey, almost black backsplash. But it makes be happy to hear how excited you where with the outcome! So well done! Very cool, awesome, amazing!! Keep up the great work my friend! (Sorry, my friend is something I say to everyone. Not saying I know you, or that we are friends or anything like that!) Lol take care.

    absolutely love the look of concrete counters!! I'm buying a house at the moment and planning on microtopping the existing laminate counters for a low-budget makeover. I truly hope they turn out looking even a fraction as good as these!!!

    Your hard work really shows in the results. I wish I had that kind of drive. The "craftsmen" in my kitchen cut a relief into the drywall in order to fit the countertop. Caulked over it to hide the cut out. They did this because they didn't have the 90 degree. perpendicular wall correct. It was more like 85 degrees on the inside.

    When you cut your cabinet, use a razor knife and cut your line, then make sure to use a sharp fine tooth blade if you must use a jigsaw. Cutting the line will help prevent the wood from chipping out and make the cut much better.

    If you would have used wax on your mold you would of had any problems removing those edge pieces. Also you used to reinforcement in your form. The fact it didn’t break when you moved it and crushed someones foot is a miracle. Not to mention if your cabinets are perfectly level eventually those tops will crack guaranteed.

      @@WelcometotheWoodsBlog very true. Curious why no wire mesh in the concrete I know its thin but the wire helps correct.. thats what I've been told

    • @WelcometotheWoodsBlog
      @WelcometotheWoodsBlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@norcross26 this product doesn't need it at all. The polymers in the concrete act like metal fibers that hold the concrete together giving it crazy strength. You can literally drive a car on this stuff without it cracking and it can span 6 feet unsupported without issue. So it's really because the product itself is formulated in such a way no metal rebar or mesh is required.

    Question: because you put the aesthetic layer of concrete on the vertical drywall (for backsplash) and the horizontal surface (counter) and edges... Is it possible to use a different base for the counter? Meaning, rather than casting concrete, since it's visually going to be covered anyway, can the counter be constructed out of something else? Pros and cons?
    Thanks for the video! I'm going to be constructing a kitchen for my basement apartment and I love the idea of concrete countertops. I was looking at Z Countertop Solutions, which is a pour-in-place product. But I am curious about the thin layer troweling option you did.

    • @WelcometotheWoodsBlog
      @WelcometotheWoodsBlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes so you can apply the thin layer of MicroTek concrete topping over any stable substrate. I chose concrete because then I didn't need to put the waterproofing membrane or any kind of primer on the substrate. Concrete that isn't sealed absorbed the MicroTek layer so I could just keep working. You should definitely look into it and you can reach out to diyconcrete.com with your specific questions because they are beyond helpful!! ♥️

    Is this effective only if you have a true flat surface?

    • @WelcometotheWoodsBlog
      @WelcometotheWoodsBlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, my sheetrock wasn't very flat actually and I was able to build on it a bit and make it flatter. The counter was completely flat, but I also think a small amount of variation there wouldn't be a problem. You can build this product up to just less than 1/8" thickness so it depends on application.

    Wait. No reinforcement mesh?

    • @WelcometotheWoodsBlog
      @WelcometotheWoodsBlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope these counters have polymers that act like metal mesh (stronger actually) to hold it together and give it incredible strength. That's part of why these concrete counters are more DIY friendly than most options.

    I don’t like how the two slabs are not formally joined, like with epoxy as would be done with stone. That joint is a crack waiting to happen. Also, the slabs should have been attached to the cabinets, not just sit there.
