I remember to even back further than over 20 years ago people were trying to do this and post it online. The first thing I said to the idea was "Borax!" and shortly after, another guy from the chatroom tried it and it worked!
I'm planning to do with with a cheap Epiphone SG, but it has a set neck. Should I keep the guitar together and just take off the fret board? And how did you put the Jackson logo back on the head stock? Nice work, thanks.
Cool man. Assuming you're just swirling the body/headstock: I would use some good quality painters tape and tape the neck and fretboard up very, VERY well, so that it's impenetrable as possible. After you dip it, I would gently dry the taped neck area with a blow drier (making sure you don't smudge the swirl paint on the body) and as soon as possible take the tape off to ensure that water didn't seep through. Water is an enemy if you let it sit. As for the logo, I bought it best-decals dot com, it's a great decal. I put it on with the help from my friend and they we shot some poly over it.
very nice.. how did you finish off the guitar?? leave the enamel paints to dry or did you put a few coats of lacquer over the top?? my sone wants me to do this now on his guitars
Thanks man. Humbrols are pretty popular because of how user friendly they are. Some guys use Plasti Kote & Marble paints with success. It's widely known that Testors paints perform poorly (skin up on the surface much too quickly), though I know a guy who had killer results with his first Testor swirl. I tried Testors and had no luck with them.
NP man. Well, it's a 50gal steel drum and IIRC I filled about 40-42 gallons. I filled it 3 gallons at a time with a bucket (with warm water) and then cooled it down with bags of ice (made sure it didn't leak) to cool the water until it was just about 78-79deg.
Hey man its me again! Im curious about 2 things : 1) whats the borax ratio your using tablespoon/gallons and 2) have you ever had the problem where it seems like the paint is stacking and therefore does that the paint drips all over the body when you pull it out? Im having terrible issues with that problem and im wondering if its because of the borax quantitiy... (ive been using 1.5 to 2.5 tblsp/gallon depending on the tests) Thanks a lot for your tips man
Frank, son esmaltes de Humbrol, los que se usan para pintar modelos de avioncitos etc. También fabrican acrílicos, pero estos son esmaltes. Si pinchás con el ratón en 'mostrar más' lo dice. Genial ¿no?
I had every bit of the neck (except the obvious front of the headstock) taped off with good quality painter's tape. including the back of the neck. I had layers of it so water wouldn't penetrate it. However, water still did penetrate through the weakest tape point: the truss rod cavity. I had a inadequate tape job on that. I should've packed that cavity with melted wax. That would've been the smartest way to do it. After everything was dried and the tape was removed, I refinished the neck by sanding it down with 220 grit, then about 400 grit. Then I oiled it with tru oil (about 4 or 5 super thin coats.
Amigo, liked muto of your job .. I tried using some automotive paints but I have not worked. Can you explain how you do that? that uses inks? If you tell me I will be very grateful .. My email is: souzarios@gmail.com. And since parabens have the knowledge.
Definitely plan on doing this method for my X-Box shell and controller, using white, evergreen and neon green.

Do it. It's a LOT of fun. Especially when you start testing your dipping technique.
this was cool. i hate it when others swirl the water too much, so the pattern looks like squashed food. This looks great

Are you using the Acrylic or the oil based enamel?
NP man.

It breaks the surface tension of the water. Basically it's a detergent that keeps the paint separateand on top of the water.
GREAT JOB!! what is the recipe for the borax and water and what do you do to the paint do u use thinner?
Good job nojyeloot! Question? is there other paint than humbrol that we can use? Can we use any enamel paint? Thank you.

Thanks for the answer. How many Gallons of water are you using to be able to submerge the guitar? And thanks again.

Thank's for the help.
just wondering, what did you do with the back of the neck? did you swirl it or just leave it as is?

just curious...does anyone know if I can use this as an alternative to nail polish to do nail art?

Ps how do you dip the body?
All info is in the description.
Absolutely, sorry for the delay
