Hi folks, I had the honor and pleasure of interviewing the High Kings on TV last Saturday evening on PBS. They were fantastic. We had a ball and they have a terrific sense of Irish dry humor. They are very talented and their musical background is extensive. The concert has created a terrific response across the country. Regards, JimMastersTV
thank-you for this wonderful, song & memory... My grandfather was a sea captain & used to sing to my twin sister & I when he was away at Sea,,over radio phone ,,, this was one of the songs he sang !!! Thank-you for the great Memory !!
I also saw them on my local PBS station and just loved them. I went out the next day and found their CD at Borders and the DVD PBS had shown was at FYE and couldn't resist buying that too. What AMAZING harmonies, BEAUTIFUL!!!
I haven't had this many goosebumps hearing a group sing in a long time. These guys definitely have talent, they harmonize very well. I want to hear more.
i saw this last year on pbs, probably one of the best concerts ive seen. still a pleasure to watch them. and the pretty young lady on the fiddle (wink wink)
The High Kings are simply brilliant. They start an Irish tour on 5th June and are in the Gaiety Theatre Dublin 0n 8th June. Cant wait to see them live in concert. Stephanie
This just breaks my heart apart. My mother Kathleen Murphy loved this song in the old days. I wish she could have seen these beautiful Irish men sing this song. And my mother's eyes did indeed shine like diamonds. I miss her so much! Danny
they are one of the best live acts i have seen in a long time. they make me proud to be irish. as soon as their cd is released over here i am getting it
In a neat little town they called Belfast Apprentice to trade I was bound And many an hour's sweet happiness Have I spent in that neat little town As sad misfortune came over me Which caused me to stray from the land Far away from me friends and relations Betrayed by the black velvet band Her eyes they shone like diamonds I thought her the queen of the land And her hair, it hung over her shoulder Tied up with a black velvet band I took a stroll down broadway Meaning not long for to stay When who should I meet but this pretty fair maid Come a-traipsing along the highway She was both fair and handsome Her neck, it was just like a swan And her hair, it hung over her shoulder Tied up with a black velvet band Her eyes they shone like diamonds I thought her the queen of the land And her hair, it hung over her shoulder Tied up with a black velvet band I took a stroll with this pretty fair maid And a gentleman passing us by Well, I knew she meant the doing of him By the look in her roguish black eye A gold watch she took from his pocket And placed it right into my hand And the very first thing that I said, was Bad 'cess to the black velvet band Her eyes they shone like diamonds I thought her the queen of the land And her hair, it hung over her shoulder Tied up with a black velvet band Before the judge and the jury Next morning, I had to appear The judge, he says to me "Young man, you're case it is proven clear We'll give you seven years penal servitude To be spent far away from the land Far away from your friends and relations Betrayed by the black velvet band" Her eyes they shone like diamonds I thought her the queen of the land And her hair, it hung over her shoulder Tied up with a black velvet band So come all you jolly young fellows A warning take by me When you are out on the town, me lads Beware of the pretty Colleens They'll feed you with strong drink, me lads 'Til you are unable to stand And the very first thing that you'll know is You've landed in Van Diemens Land Her eyes they shone like diamonds Her neck, it was just like a swan And her hair, it hung over her shoulder Tied up with a black velvet band
I grew up listening to punk and metal and it still makes up 95% of all I listen to. This is what I put on when I need to escape from everything and just relax.
Someone made a comment about it being "choir like". Go see these fellows live. They are awesome. So lively, exciting and FULL of personality. More "Pub" like I guess you could say. LOVE LOVE LOVE these guys.
Yeah, that was a sweet day. It was an Irish Cabaret at Jury's Hotel. I met him and a bunch of other talented performers! Hope to go to Ireland again soon. Greetings from Brazil
Of all the "Celtic" music that has been put out there in recent years, there is no question in my mind that these guys represent the music in the most professional, least cheesy and most talented way . It's breathes new life into all the songs and doesn't take away from the original intent one iota. Bravo boys Bravo !!!
they really are amazing, I just can't get enough, especially the way Furey's voice crackle a bit roughly whenever he does some vocal turns. It's O.o too good to be heard!
The foreseeable future of Irish traditional and Folk music is in safe hands .....sleep peaceful Ronnie, Luke and Ciar'an...not the same, but safe and sound never the less....
Awesome version! Killer fiddle! I actually saw Brian Dunphy perform live in when I was in Ireland in 2006. Got to shake his hand and buy an autographed CD.
40 years ago heard it for the first time sung in the dutch language by the Belgian group called RUM. My favorite song on that album. This version i like too
Its also nice to be able to hear these songs/music in more of a straight tone without having any accent. For an example other band would pronounce "my" as "me." I totally love both styles.
I'm a metalhead as well (favorite bands are Children of Bodom, Sonata Arctica and Amon Amarth) and I quite like the High King's versions of the common Irish pub songs like this one, Whiskey in the Jar, Rockey Road to Dublin and Wild Rover
Herculo Drome There are so many versions of the lyrics I'm not sure how any could claim to know the _original_ . The High Kings left out a few verses in this rendition for sure which help tell the full tale. But it's a great sound and fine work.
+Lazar Djordjevic I suppose the traditionalists think that they have butchered this song by truncating the lyrics and holding back the tempo. The conventional version is an upbeat song, but I personally think that this version is aurally gratifying.
I just want to say that if The High Kings & Celtic Woman make people listen to the traditonal music from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Canada, Galicia & the 'mountain music of America - more power to them! Thanks for your time.
besides the irish rovers(1st group I heard do this song)I like dropkick murphys version too.I also saw a PBS special of the high kings in dublin.its on tonight at 10pm(3/17)
oh sorry, just read my comment , typos!! I do apologize .. My Sister lost her life serving Canada , I am a Medical Person .. but our Grandfather , he did say & sing Blue Velvet instead of Black Velvet !! But he followed all the rest of the song !!! God Bless you all !!! And may all your Eyes shine with with Diamonds & Keep singing !!!!
that could be why though, these groups have found phenomenal success in the states as opposed to ireland. we are utterly seduced by the pure voices and celtic instruments. it is such a change from the rough, raunchy music that permeates he land. enough whiskey drenched music of all kinds round here.
These guys have just catapulted Irish music into 2010!!! Excellent harmony in all of their material not your standard rough voice but beautiful and unique as Christy Moore!
@Nomi1nomes Haha fair enough that does sound like good craic. The Irish Rovers, dont know too much about them (canadian arent they?) but what I have heard does sound a bit more honest than this stuff.... so yeah points for that. :-)
How incredible! everything is so accurate, except that my mother's Irish were green, not black. My daughter's eyes are also green, while my Irish eyes are very dark, like my father. It's too good a life. I don't deserve this much luck, to see my mother's eyes in my 6' tall daughter. I'm a lucky man, indeed!
Omg I can't stop listening to this version, the high Kings voices are amazing, they have blown me away
I shed a tear when I heard this song at the Black Box 5 years ago. I was pregnant. My baby moved a lot during the concert. :)
))))

thank-you for this wonderful,song & memory...
My grandfather was a sea captain & used to sing to my twin sister & I when he was away at Sea,,over radio phone ,,, this was one of the songs he sang !!! Thank-you for the great Memory !!
I grew up listening and learning all these great songs from all the great pub bands in the early 90s in Nova Scotia..I was really lucky
I don't care what people say...I loooove the High Kings...listening to their music lifts my spirits
I also saw them on my local PBS station and just loved them. I went out the next day and found their CD at Borders and the DVD PBS had shown was at FYE and couldn't resist buying that too. What AMAZING harmonies, BEAUTIFUL!!!

They have the most gorgeous voices!!!

The High Kings are simply brilliant.
They start an Irish tour on 5th June and are in the Gaiety Theatre Dublin 0n 8th June. Cant wait to see them live in concert. Stephanie

Magical 😍😍😍 much love from morocco 🇲🇦
I saw this sang live by The High Kings on Friday evening in Cincinnati, OH - it was beautiful!!!
In a neat little town they called Belfast
Apprentice to trade I was bound
And many an hour's sweet happiness
Have I spent in that neat little town
As sad misfortune came over me
Which caused me to stray from the land
Far away from me friends and relations
Betrayed by the black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
I took a stroll down broadway
Meaning not long for to stay
When who should I meet but this pretty fair maid
Come a-traipsing along the highway
She was both fair and handsome
Her neck, it was just like a swan
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
I took a stroll with this pretty fair maid
And a gentleman passing us by
Well, I knew she meant the doing of him
By the look in her roguish black eye
A gold watch she took from his pocket
And placed it right into my hand
And the very first thing that I said, was
Bad 'cess to the black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Before the judge and the jury
Next morning, I had to appear
The judge, he says to me
"Young man, you're case it is proven clear
We'll give you seven years penal servitude
To be spent far away from the land
Far away from your friends and relations
Betrayed by the black velvet band"
Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
So come all you jolly young fellows
A warning take by me
When you are out on the town, me lads
Beware of the pretty Colleens
They'll feed you with strong drink, me lads
'Til you are unable to stand
And the very first thing that you'll know is
You've landed in Van Diemens Land
Her eyes they shone like diamonds
Her neck, it was just like a swan
And her hair, it hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Brilliant
Merci
Shone like diamonds
a lovely version ... thank you for posting
I've watched Peaky Blinders, in scene that Grace sang.
I feel this song.
And now I found the fantastic one, great vocal voice.
I grew up listening to punk and metal and it still makes up 95% of all I listen to. This is what I put on when I need to escape from everything and just relax.

Its also nice to be able to hear these songs/music in more of a straight tone without having any accent. For an example other band would pronounce "my" as "me." I totally love both styles.

Can someone please explain me all the hate for the High Kings? I thought they sounded just fine
I know nothing of the hate you speak
+Lazar Djordjevic ~ Have you listen the original version of this song ?
This song talking about Guiness, not love and the High Kings don't honor it.
hmm....
I must admit I didn't. I will though. But in general, I still think they are okay
Herculo Drome
There are so many versions of the lyrics I'm not sure how any could claim to know the _original_ .

@deather11 yeah but nothing is wrong with saying "me" in the place of "my" every country is different and it's the difference that makes them unique.
