    Steppenwolf was an American-Canadian rock band that was prominent from 1968 to 1972. The group was formed in late 1967 in Los Angeles by lead singer John Kay, keyboardist Goldy McJohn, and drummer Jerry Edmonton, all formerly of the Canadian band the Sparrows. Guitarist Michael Monarch and bass guitarist Rushton Moreve were recruited via notices placed in Los Angeles-area record and musical instrument stores.
    "Magic Carpet Ride" is a rock song written by John Kay and Rushton Moreve from the Canadian-American hard rock band Steppenwolf. The song was initially released in 1968 on the album The Second.
    Composers: Rushton Moreve, John Kay
    Producer: Gabriel Mekler
    Performed by Steppenwolf
    * John Kay - lead vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica (1967-1972, 1974-1976, 1980-2018)
    * Michael Wilk - keyboards, backing vocals (1982-2018), bass (1985-2009)
    * Gary Link - bass, backing vocals (1982-1985, 2009-2018)
    * Ron Hurst - drums, backing vocals (1984-2018)
    * Danny Johnson - lead guitar, backing vocals, mandolin (1996-2018)
    Genres: Acid rock, psychedelic rock, psychedelic pop
    Origin: Los Angeles, California U.S

      John Kay was smart, after splitting with his bandmates he let them keep the name Steppenwolf and the right to play his songs in concerts, but he would keep all of the future royalties...well here comes cassettes, CDs and streaming services = made him very wealthy. His old bandmates wanted a cut of the new royalties and sue John, but they lose in court.

    • @lesschoenberger3070
      @lesschoenberger3070 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lakenneth374 Goldy and Nick used the band name without permission and John and Jerry took them to court and the ruling was they could use the name but give up their rights to any future royalties, plus give John and Jerry a percentage of their income but the "bogus" Steppenwolf bands didn't last long once people knew Kay wasn't the lead singer. And when he hit the road in 1980 as "John Kay & Steppenwolf" he put them out of business for good.
      And you are very correct, they defintiley lost a LOT of money when CD's came out and the other things you mentioned. I know a lot of people call John "heartless" and cruel for doing this to them, but they agreed to the terms many years ago.

    As a 12 year old in 1974 I played drums in an all adult band. Our name was Starlight Arrival. We were a bunch of Americans living in Dubai because our parents worked for oil companies. This song Magic Carpet Ride was our claim to fame in our small community of playing local nightclubs (with my parents permission)and dances at the American school of Dubai. I’m now 61 years old and still play drums. Great reaction and also brought back great memories for me. Thank you Beth. I watch all of your reactions. You’re the best and have an absolutely beautiful smile and personality. I’m a closet vocalist and your vocal tips are priceless ❤

    Just absolutely love to see you get into the music and dance around with that hair just tossing around. Also known to be a great pick-up line, "...come with me little girl on a magic carpet ride". To me, Steppenwolf is timeless with their sound that just drives into that wild side we all feel at times. They were to first coin the term "heavy metal" with their song "Born to Be Wild" for the movie Easy Rider.

    Wow, I wanted to say I just had a life experience. So this is the first reaction of yours I've ever seen. I've got a small channel myself. I'm disabled & terminal now, but I'm in a good place. Balance is what I had been talking about with my partner on the channel for the last several hours. Doing as much good in your life as bad and everything in between. When you're faced with your own divinity, even though we all are, yet when there's an actual clock put on it, it makes it different and puts things in different perspective. Tool has been a blessing for me, they have literally been my tool. So if you can find your spirituality and peace of mind through metal then that's great.
    Now, for the reason that I clicked on this video. At 14 years old in the mountains of North Carolina, the Cherokee Appalachian Mountain chain, I was at a bike rally, my 1st concert was at that rally.
    Foghat, Black foot & Steppenwolf sang this song as the Encore!
    So on a night I finally found the right words to explain all of my feelings about balance and the world and how it works was profound in itself. Now I'm reflecting on my life and being in a good place now through music. I happened to see the band which was the 1st I had ever seen on your reaction.
    So halfway through it. You speak about balance being the key to happiness within yourself. So I just wanted to share that because it was very special. Amazing. Whatever the hell you want to call, it was really cool. Kind of validated my own, validity.
    I subbed, much ♥ ♥

    This is the latter line up of the band and John had a certain grit in his younger voice that he lost as he got older . I got to see Steppenwolf twice and it was great ,they are very much part of the innovative late 60s bands ,they were the first real stoner band with great social and political commentary ..

      I felt his voice got better as he got older. Less grit, more interesting ornaments. I had rented this entire concert on DVD back when we used to do that, and I was amazed at how well his voice sounds after so many decades.

      @@wardka I was use to that rough voice he had and it added a certain character to the songs such as It's Never Too Late , Don't Step on the Grass Sam ,and MONSTER.. Their 60s early 70s era was gold .

    On top of how well John Kaye's voice has held up, what amazes me about this concert is there no bass player. It's all done with the Hammond organ bass pedals (according to the DVD extras).

    Before they were Steppenwolf they were the Canadian band John Kay and the Sparrow, I suggest you check out the pusher by the sparrow (later released by Steppenwolf).

    So effortless. I'm a "dance" DJ. I focus on the early 90's vocal house. Dance music encompasases so many genres. lol. When I'm in the club and I'm doing the 12-1am hour or the last 1-2am hour I'm searching through my record box for songs that have a strong drum beat but also have "stabbing" chords. You don't want anything too melodic and "floaty" as those sorts of songs are used for getting the crowd uplifted to that final hour. Then you can go a bit harder, get people really going and stomping.
    Djing used to be a skill. Nowadays people turn up with a laptop and a couple of memory sticks and often just play set routines they put together at home.
    Back in the day I'd take a record box that held about 200 vinyl records even though I'd only play about 20. Anyone can play music to a group of people. A DJ can read the crowd see what they react to then select the songs to keep them up and dancing.
    A good DJ doesn't choose what to play. They let the crowd energy decide what to play.

    You have to listen to a song called Dethrone Live by Bad Omens, the frontman is one of the best live metal vocalists in metal.

    You know it's nice to see one of the big sixties voices still going strong and not dead from all the other stuff that went with it.

    Canadian Band first under the name of The Sparows. When touring in the US two of the original left and were replaced by American players and they changed their name to Steppenwolf . John Kay lead singer was born in Germany and emigrated with his mother to Canada when he was fourteen.

    Not Rocky Horror, but I think this was on the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack, the studio version, of course. There's an album that's worth a listen.
