Not sure I host hikers for altruistic reasons but nice of you to 'plug' trail angels. What I get out of hosting is interesting people to chat with. Some are on a quest, trying to figure themselves out, connecting with the natural world. I love listening to their stories, their prospectives. My husband and I don't travel much. Hikers bring the world to our door.
Here is a combo I had. Getting toward the end of the hiking day, and I had a goal that I needed to reach. I had the downhill so I stepped off the (narrow) trail, to let the uphill guys keep their momentum. But they stopped. In the middle of the trail so I could not pass unless I pushed them out of the way. So one man began to talk to me about an older hiker that needed someone to look out for him. I told him that I would. He droned on and I found an opening (both in the trail and in the conversation). I bid them happy trails and headed down the trail. After I got more than 30 yards downhill, trying to make up the time, and the guy yelled at me. "HEY! Lookout for that old hiker." Later I saw who was much older than we were. I greeted him and he was fine. He was relaxed and hiking his own hike. He looked in better shape than either me or the guy who yelled at me. I think the first guy just liked messing with me. Great video Rev! One thing that drives me crazy are the pet owners to do clean up after their dogs but then leave the plastic baggie of dog poo on the side of the trail. I just don't understand it!
Amen! I hike local trails almost daily and this is so so common. Often, when I come back to the trail the next day, the poop bag is still there. Really bugs me
I can’t tell you how much a loved this! As an avid hiker in the PNW I’ve watched the trails get busier and busier with outdoor enthusiasts. If we can all remember some basic hiker etiquette and give a little grace it will be a much better experience for everyone. Happy Hiking!
Hey Rev, agree with all you said. When I go hiking on our local trail, I always make a point of waving or saying hello, I often get some suprised looks, like " How dare you speak to me!" Unfortunately it seems to be a sign of the times. It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to just acknowledge someone.
I always try to be polite and friendly on our local trails. We only have a few real good ones so I think that it is important that everyone feel welcome and secure. Our trails are not wilderness by any means, but a lot of folks just want to "get out of town" and enjoy nature. I feel that they need to feel comfortable when they meet someone else on the trail "out and away" from everyone else and away from their cars, especially when both are single hikers.
Thankfully I avoid most of this by going on solo trips during the week. The 'I am the Hiking Rev' scene is awesome. Nice touch looking away. I'm going to use that. One thing that bugs me is off leash dogs with the owner no where in sight.
One more: no matter what the law or common sense, do not under any circumstances leash your dog. Your furry child is special and can't be leashed. And if anybody looks askance at you for not controlling your fur baby, give them a piece of your mind. For bonus points, don't pick up your pet's poop either.
Your comment is good however, I did this then saw one night another hiker with his red head lamp on. I remembered my headlamp could do that and always did after. He never said anything to me.
I've met my share of rude hikers in the past. The worst types are the ones that leave toilet paper all over the trail, give you the wrong directions on purpose, the ones that destroy or misplace trail signs, or the ones who camp in the middle of the trail. Hiking Rev - I just stumbled across your channel and have found it to be as lovely and lighthearted as any other on YT. Prefer the other person is great lesson to internalize. I wish you all the best in your endeavors to be a rude hiker!
There is one no no that you and many, many others speak of that I do, but hear me out. I will, if solo backpacking in a remote area, no one around, listen to an audiobook or podcast without headphones. This gives me peace of mind and I feel the noise, not loud, helps alert wildlife that I am around. There have been a couple of occasions where I surprisingly met folks on trail and would quickly pause, and once got a very rude comment even after I profusely apologized, but I am not going to quit doing that in remote areas where it makes me feel safer in case I may disturb a random hiker for a second before I turn it off.
Right on the ball Rev. By far the worst is the hunting group that arrives late by 4 x 4 and gets loaded and loud and downright dangerous letting off firearms indiscriminately necessitating everyone else to vacate the shelter/camp in the wee small hours.
That is so true, Rev. The majority of people I've met on yrail have been noce and polite. Practicing trail educate makes it more enjoyable on trail. Thank you for sharing this.
Here's a couple of things I witnessed on my AT hike. Let your dog play in the watersource upstream from where you're collecting your water, and making way too much oatmeal and then scraping the excess on the rocks of the firepit. I tried to give that one the trail name "Sir Leaves Alot," but he didn't stick around long enough for it to take.
Hi Rev, thanks for another fun video. I have learned much from you. I laughed about one of your tips. It was something like, don’t tell everyone what a great hiker you are. It made me laugh cuz I was not a good hiker. By my third hike I had learned a few things and I had a few people ask me questions as if I was some kind of expert haha. I had to tell them, this is only my third hike so don’t take my advice too seriously. This is a credit to your videos that someone thought I knew what I was doing by my third hike. BTW: We have a nice little trail here in Minnesota called the Superior Hiking Trail. It is a wonderful trail in September cuz the leaves are changing and the bugs are gone. You should check it out. And please sign my backpack 😅
I agree with all of these, except for the mandatory greeting. There are many reasons I may not greet on the trail. 1) The trail is so busy with hundreds passing, so my voice gets sore. As an introvert, it's actually exhausting to greet so many times hour after hour. 2) I go hiking to get away from people, and to mindfully observe nature. I prefer to listen to the birds and the wind, than human chatter. 3) Especially while ascending, I'm working on rhythmic nasal breathing. Using my voice isn't always possible if I'm out of breath. If I'm exhausted, I'm trying to conserve as much energy as possible. As an introvert, too much social interaction really does exhaust me. 🙏
I’m from a small state that now gets hammered with hikers from bigger places seeking our wilderness areas. I think that hikers that don’t say hello literally don’t know how to act outside of their gigaplex where no one talks to each other unless it’s on a social media app. I don’t get mad at them, I feel sorry for them.
All true sir. I gave up thru hiking and avoid national parks as well as their camp sites for all of these stated reasons. This is after 14,000+ miles of hiking... Thanks for making these rude issues a known fact. Happy Trails my friends.
Right about the loud and obnoxious. If I wanted to hear loud conversation, yelling etc. I’d stay in the city and go to a sports bar or one of those bottomless mimosa brunches.
What a funny video! All so true. That passing someone by and they don’t say hi when you're out in the middle of nowhere is crazy to me too. In the northeast we have Application Mountain Club (AMC) huts off the AT. Excellent locations and crew (croo). Just wished they’d adopt sections for snorers, then we’d all get some sleep. Great to know you'll sign my backpack if I run into you one day 😊 Looking forward to that.
Generally I agree, but here's another thought: I tend to be an introvert, and I get sort of meditative and in my own head when I'm hiking; sort of lost in my own thoughts. Even so, if for some reason I'm not saying "Hello!" I will usually at least try to do a head nod, a hand wave, or an informal salute.
Many assumptions made about expecting a greeting or acknowledgement in return. Some may not notice because they are absorbed in what they are doing and didn't notice you. Some may be trying to get away from people and may consider it rude that you interrupt their peace and quiet. Some may not be able to even hear your greeting for one reason or another, whether it be from headphones or a physical impairment. When I go out I go out to be alone and don't care that you're impression of me is rude if I happen to not return your greeting or salutation.
So your talking about this whole generation of yuppies.😅Great video there are no pro hikers or superstars. Your definitely right the word of God being left out is the problem now
This is all great stuff! Made a list so I don't forget any of them. Can't wait to try out all these rude techniques next time I'm on the trail. Instead of only ignoring people when they say hello, do you think it's more rude to throw up the middle finger while walking by not looking at them? Trying to achieve the ultimate trail rudeness badge.
Hey Stephanie. That’s a hard one. Someone asked me that same question which I responded to it in a “question-and-answer” video that I did. I’ll leave the link here. th-cam.com/video/HHHs2BQsgyw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=b14g0_yT8JMzCa1_
Last time i did thru hiking.... meeting another group after 2 hours last human interaction actually gave me a little boost of energy. Those people who refused to say anything at all mostly not a fun type anyway.
I laughed at this!! Lol I remember once hiking early in the morning with my Grandpa in Phoenix. As we were hiking down a young woman was hiking up. My grandpa said, "good morning how are you today?" He was met with absolute silence! When we were out of ear shot he said to me, "East Coast". Lol This was back in the early 1990's when people were really starting to move in!! Lol NOT that east coast people are always rude. I never forgot that! Lol
That's a good one. I get quite annoyed when people are not greeting or greeting back on trails. However, I always try to release terrible chemical warfare farts in crowded bedrooms in mountain huts. My only concern then is that nobody lights a match.
This is great!!😃👍🏼. After the pandemic started and during the pandemic, my standards for trail behavior lowered dramatically!! I don’t mind mountain bikers or horseback folk or ATV people (4 wheelers and snow machines) as long as they don’t leave a plastic bag on the side of the trail that takes 3000 years to break down, full of fresh hot dog s&@$!!!
It served Jacob well to be offered the speckled/spotted sheep of Laban's flock. He, actually, prospered by Laban's desire to give him the worst of the flock. Mixed blessings come from accepting a less than choice 'spot'. Thank you for the bible reference of in honor of preferring one another.
I disagree with the uphill rule. Downhill you have momentum and uphill you probably need to stop and catch your breath. I always let downhill hikers pass me. One exception is on a steep trail with loose rocks that might be dislodged and strike the uphill hiker. The rudest hikers (on the AT) are those who set up a tent in the middle of the shelter on a rainy day and take up all the space.
Well done very entertaining ... as always. I love trail people and talking with them and have to say 95% lack one iota of rudeness as for the other 5% they are truly the peasants on the trail.
Very well said ! However you now made me realize just how RUDE my dogs are ! 😂 lol We keep them well under controll & leashed as we know lots are not dog people, but hey there flatulence problem well what can I say sorry 😂😂
Dear sir, Not everyone feels compelled to participate in small talk. Some people are operating in a world of their own and won’t so much as look at their fellow man. Don’t whine bc they don’t wave. (See yellowledbetter by Pearl Jam) Overjoyed, loud, drunks and those who habitually lie and steal are the rudest of all. It’s kind of silly and rude of you to expect everyone on trail to meet your presumptuous greeting standards. A person who smiles to your face as he robs you blind or assassinates your character behind your back is as dangerous as the devil himself. I don’t smile much, never have, without being stimulated by intoxicants, but I’m happy for you if you are a genuinely happy human being. (Metaphorically) Pat your parents on the back for raising you right and keeping you safe then pat yourself on the back. Okay, we’re good to go Rev! Be well, -a person with no tolerance for bs.
Another rude way to pass someone that is going the same direction you are, is to announce "passing on your right or passing on your left." Because, they maybe hard of hearing or listening to head phones.
How is that rude? How else am I supposed to pass? Some would say that people that aren't aware of their surrounding and taking up the whole trail are the rude ones.
Another person that loves loves dogs but was in a shelter one evening and the dog owner was letting their dog run all over our sleep systems, needless to say I packed up and moved down the trail a ways to tent camp smh
The people you're describing have no business in the woods beyond winding up missing there. Those people belong in cities, where they can do as they please

Hmmm. I am five minutes into the video. I stopped. I read maybe 10 comments. The rude are usually rued And they don't realize either. Then there are those who mount their soapbox and espouse rudimentary suggestions coupled with their judgment of others. If I'm hiking, do I have to be verbal when I greet someone? Can I wave? If someone's hiking slower than me and I want to pass them and they don't notice, do I seethe? Or do I say the same thing when I am walking anywhere and someone is in my path, " excuse me please". If they apologize as people are want to do in the supermarket aisles, I point Out they don't need to apologize for walking, then thank them, and keep moving. Dog poop. I say to everyone with a dog,, "What a nice dog that is with you. I like seeing dogs on the trail. I just don't believe some people when they don't clean their feces out of the path." If they are defensive, tell them you weren't Saying that they did not clean up after the dog with them. This one's a tad passive aggressive but it does get the word out to many dog people. Eventually it will reach the inconsiderate ones. The poop in the video doesn't look like dog poop though. Loud music. " hey that's Barry Manilow isn't it? My mom likes to crank him up too. My dad doesn't like it. Especially when he is outside. ". Belching/farting. Sometimes they just can't be stifled. As a contest is usually done by males under the age Of 20. Many Kids are really stupid. I did not participate in body noise contests, except for the hand under the opposite armpit. I did a host of other things that were really stupid. Say something to them if you like! Why not? You expect others to speak to you. Cuts both ways
Thanks for your comments. The reason most people watch TH-cam videos is to get a different perspective on the way to do things. It’s like eating at a cafeteria. Nobody forced you to go in. If you don’t like the food that’s in front of you just move on. Don’t spit in it. Don’t criticize it. Don’t disagree with it. Just move on. Perhaps you may find out that you really do like cream spinach. But you’ll never know until you try it. I hate you only watched five minutes. The best was yet to come. By the way, I did not say to verbally respond. I just said you need to respond. (I’ll get off my soapbox now.) 😁
I watched the rest later. It was consistent with the first five minutes, And your response now. I look on life as a trail. Everything everyone is doing, every moment of the day is part of the trail leading to the next plane of existence. Every word, billboard, T-shirt, bumper sticker, TH-cam video is just like a person saying it to you. Hence If something is unclear I ask. If something smells like dung on The trail, I point it out, oft times Removing it. Now I have never seen the data that tells me what "most people" are doing on TH-cam. I do know on my trail I do my best to help others. When I see some loud talking, dung slinging, Holier than thou, problem Complainer with no solutions offered. I point that out. We are never too old to learn. There was a time I was too stubborn and too full of myself to learn. But we are all born knowing That the solution is treating others kindly. It certainly is not mocking their Socially inept behavior without trying to help them

Hiking Rev - I just stumbled across your channel and have found it to be as lovely and lighthearted as any other on YT. Prefer the other person is great lesson to internalize. I wish you all the best in your endeavors to be a rude hiker!
Thanks. I think. 🤔
@@TheHikingRev haha I was having some fun, great channel you have here!
Hey Kristy. I do the same only if I don’t see other people. 😁
Good ride points, Rev! Sadly, common sense ain't all that common and manners isn't far behind.
Man, I wish I had thought of that before I put out my video.😁
Great tips and suggestions Rev! I will put them into practice starting on tomorrow's hike. Have an awful day! 🤣😂
Thanks. Happy hiking. 😁
AMEN
👍
Well done brother! Rick
Hey Rick. Thank you very much.😁
Right on the ball Rev. By far the worst is the hunting group that arrives late by 4 x 4 and gets loaded and loud and downright dangerous letting off firearms indiscriminately necessitating everyone else to vacate the shelter/camp in the wee small hours.
Yeah. I’d say that was pretty rude.😁
That is so true, Rev. The majority of people I've met on yrail have been noce and polite. Practicing trail educate makes it more enjoyable on trail. Thank you for sharing this.
You’re welcome. Thankfully “Rude Hikers” are in the minority. 😁
All you have mentioned ,also, apply to everyday living. So many people are disrespectful and thoughtless nowadays. It’s so discouraging.
So true! Backpacking is just a microcosm of life itself. 😁 I can’t do anything about how others act but I CAN do something about how I act.
😂😂😂 That’s good Brian! The SHT is definitely on my “Bucket List” of trails to hike.
Thanks. 😁
Your voice gets sore? Lmao
A nod and a smile is just as friendly as a voiced hello 😊
Ha ha ho ho hee hee ha ha! This was great!! I’m sorry to say I saw myself in at least one of these. Great lessons for us. Thanks Rev!!
We ALL can do better. 😁
I have a local mountain I hike/climb about 3-4 times per week... it's a popular place and there are smokers.
Whoa! 😁
Not everyone likes to talk to people.
So true. 😁
Bravo! Good advice…and ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!’
Thanks Mary…and so true. 😁
Lovely, mighty Rev
“We’re not worthy.” 😂
Rudest hiker ever lol, Always treat people the way you want to be treated. Thank you for another great video
You’re welcome. That’s the truth. 😁
Loved it rev! Man I blew it, I could of had my pack signed by you when we hiked together! Dang it!
😂You have a black backpack.😁
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing your tips on how To be a Rude hiker 😅. All the best to you. Stay safe out there. 😊
Thanks, Ronald.😁
All true sir. I gave up thru hiking and avoid national parks as well as their camp sites for all of these stated reasons. This is after 14,000+ miles of hiking... Thanks for making these rude issues a known fact. Happy Trails my friends.
Thanks Christopher. 👍
Right about the loud and obnoxious. If I wanted to hear loud conversation, yelling etc. I’d stay in the city and go to a sports bar or one of those bottomless mimosa brunches.
😂😂😂So true.
Walking with you on this one ... mine is having to pick up cigarette butts! Best to you Rev!
How wuuude! 😁😂
😂😂😂That’s why I always bring a fresh pair of earplugs. 😁
That’s great. Yes. Just acknowledge someone else’s existence. 😁
Well done, Rev, and funny, too.
Thanks. 😂
Thanks. 😁
So your talking about this whole generation of yuppies.😅Great video there are no pro hikers or superstars. Your definitely right the word of God being left out is the problem now
Truth. 😁
As a local to the a.t. my whole life, a huge percentage of thru hikers are just getting more and more rude as the years go by. Sad.
😂😂😂
Just don’t tell em, “”The Rev” told me to give this to you.” 😂
"I am the Hiking Rev..." That make me cackle! :D
Academy Award? 😁
What type of Camera do you use on your Back Packing Trips? Thank in advance.
I use my Apple iPhone 14 Pro to shoot and edit videos.😁
Love your videos Rev. Thanks for sharing. Any tips for solving back problems due to carrying backpacks? I think I need to develop a stronger core?
Hey Stephanie. That’s a hard one. Someone asked me that same question which I responded to it in a “question-and-answer” video that I did. I’ll leave the link here.

New subscriber here! Fantastic video, sir! 😃😄👊
Thanks. And thanks for the sub. 😁
Last time i did thru hiking.... meeting another group after 2 hours last human interaction actually gave me a little boost of energy.
Those people who refused to say anything at all mostly not a fun type anyway.
How Rude! 😁
lol!! Just push people out of the way and off the trail. 😅😅
😂😂😂Then you don’t have to speak to them. 😂
Amen!🙌
Thanks. 😁
Having your friendly lovable dog run up to fellow hikers who don't know your dog, nor its temperament.
Yep. That can be pretty awkward.😁
Lol
That’s good! 😂
That's a good one. I get quite annoyed when people are not greeting or greeting back on trails. However, I always try to release terrible chemical warfare farts in crowded bedrooms in mountain huts. My only concern then is that nobody lights a match.
How wuuude! 😂
Awesome video Rev
Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😁
Thanks. 😁
YOU NAILED IT!
Thanks. 🔨😁
Hey thanks again my brother love it
You’re welcome Bill. 😁
Good advice as usual Rev
Thanks. 😁
Charlie Munger says always invert. Good job!
Thanks Tracy. 😁
That's good food for thought. I'm getting into hiking again in retirement. You don't suppose that guy was deaf? : )
Maybe he just didn’t want to talk.
Possibly. 😁
God bless! keep on keeping on.
Thanks. I’ll try. 😁
I am 80 yrs. Young and just started walking preparing for longer hikes any suggestions to getting my trail legs.Thank you👍
The older you get the more you’re going to have to start off slow and then build up.😁
❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Linda. 😁
It’s ok to be spiritual in your videos. God’s creation is so wonderful. Thanks Rev
Yes it is. Thanks. 😁
I’m considerate enough to fart in fellow hikers faces while they sleep
Ok. 🤷
I did meet you on the PCT Section J in Washington. And you were not rude at all.
I try not to be. (Unless you catch me on a bad day.) 😂
It served Jacob well to be offered the speckled/spotted sheep of Laban's flock. He, actually, prospered by Laban's desire to give him the worst of the flock. Mixed blessings come from accepting a less than choice 'spot'. Thank you for the bible reference of in honor of preferring one another.
That’s a great Biblical reference. 😁
When you see a hiker getting some water from the stream, be sure to wash your feet just upstream from them.
Wow. That’s a good one. By the way, that happened to me when I was hiking in the Desolation Wilderness.😡
It’s scary when people won’t say hi
And the unleashed dogs
Yep. Definitely rude! 😁
Hello Mr.Hiking Rev❤
😂😂😂
I disagree with the uphill rule. Downhill you have momentum and uphill you probably need to stop and catch your breath. I always let downhill hikers pass me. One exception is on a steep trail with loose rocks that might be dislodged and strike the uphill hiker. The rudest hikers (on the AT) are those who set up a tent in the middle of the shelter on a rainy day and take up all the space.
Thanks. 😁
Well done very entertaining ... as always. I love trail people and talking with them and have to say 95% lack one iota of rudeness as for the other 5% they are truly the peasants on the trail.
So true. 😁
"Unasked for advice is . . . just criticism."
But as for me, if you are coming down and I am going up . . . I'll wait for you. Every time. And HYOH.
Thanks, Jim.😁
I am a woman and hike alone. I sometimes feel apprehensive about saying hello to single men that I cross paths with on a trail. Just a tad scary.
Hey Beverly. Ask them if they’re married or single then speak to them according. 😂
When I section hike, I take trash bags for the sole purpose of picking up other peoples ‘Trash’ and packing it out.
I do the same. 😁
Very well said !
However you now made me realize just how RUDE my dogs are ! 😂 lol
We keep them well under controll & leashed as we know lots are not dog people, but hey there flatulence problem well what can I say sorry 😂😂
The dog always gets the blame. 😂
The John Manure Trail.
😂😂😂
New sub. I love the truth…✌️
Thanks. 😁
Dear sir, Not everyone feels compelled to participate in small talk. Some people are operating in a world of their own and won’t so much as look at their fellow man. Don’t whine bc they don’t wave. (See yellowledbetter by Pearl Jam)
Overjoyed, loud, drunks and those who habitually lie and steal are the rudest of all.
Be well,
-a person with no tolerance for bs.
👍😁(smile)
People who don't bury human waste a toilet paper are the worst.
Ewwwww! 😂
Having both earphones in while you’re hiking is dangerous. (walking up on rattlesnakes, etc) 😁
Interestingly out of character for you. Good, as usual, but out of character. :>)
Sometimes you just gotta change things up a bit. 😁
Another person that loves loves dogs but was in a shelter one evening and the dog owner was letting their dog run all over our sleep systems, needless to say I packed up and moved down the trail a ways to tent camp smh
So true. 😁
The people you're describing have no business in the woods beyond winding up missing there. Those people belong in cities, where they can do as they please
Yeah…like rude drivers driving slow in the left hand lane and not moving over. 😡
Oatmeal did not ask for any of these advices...so she will not fallow any of it...with resentment. She also thanks you for keeping out of control psycho anarchist Dogs void of the leash out of this topic. Stay good.
It seems to be a sore subject among many.😁
I think everyone should wear their political choice for prez on their caps. That way you will know who to avoid.
😂😂😂
It certainly is not mocking their Socially inept behavior without trying to help them
People ignore me saying hi everywhere not jut on a trail.
That’s OK Curtis. Just keep doing the right thing. Some people are just plain rude. 😁
Love the Biden sunglasses.
Ray Ban…Biden edition! 😁
Biden sunglasses? Those have been around since 1936 and were popular during WW2 and since.
Yep..but they are Biden now.
