French Foreign Legion - Life in Castel

    I found this site very useful.
    Life in Castel.
    I missed 2 points in the video:
    1 - Sundays you will get a "sieste" after lunch, and then after wakeup you will be allowed entry into your Company Club to buy a sandwich, chocolate bars, and sodas.
    2 - You have 1 final Interview when you return to Aubagne where you request the Regiment you would like and it is confirmed then.
    Part 3 of a 3 part series about my experiences with the French Foreign Legion. I'm hoping that someone may find this information helpful in deciding or preparing for the Legion.
    Feel free to ask questions and comment below. I will gladly answer any questions and go more in depth if need be on certain points.
    Bonne Chance!

    I was a sgt in castel 1988/90.
    Don't let this guy let you think that castel is easy , your training is just an introduction to military life , training starts when you get to your regiment . Just keep your mouth shut and get through it , any boot camp in all army's is the same thing.

    Hello, I'v been watching your videos today and really appreciate all the info. I have some questions and really hope you are still checking on comments.
    1) In past video you said you are expected to pay for something like 200Euros of equipment and also mentioned in this video that you are expected to buy some things for barracks. How do they expect me to pay for those things when they forbid to bring more than 50 euros for the selection? on their site it says, that i have to bring 10-50 euros, it's forbidden to bring something like 200 or 300.
    2) Is there really absolutely nothing I can do for the boring part in the Castel? Is there internet access, library, anything of that sort to kill time?

    Thanks a lot man

    I was once half way down the M4 en route to join the SAS , then as I pulled into Starbucks for a double cream coffee and muffin I started to wonder if they would allow me to use my private jet for Halo jumps ? I met this guy at the bar who had also nearly got to Hereford but he got a splinter from walking up the stairs so pulled out .. real tough life in starbucks and he said the Legion don’t drink coffee .. do you think I’m up to it .? I have sold my range rover , left my model girlfriend and shot the dog just to make sure i’m bad arse enough ...

    Viking--You did a great job with these videos. I'm a veteran of the US army and did training with the FFL...in some respects they are impressive but certainly they are not the "whole package." For Americans any special operations unit in any one of the four branches will be a far better and more challenging experience. One thing about the FFL though...you almost certainly will see action in the course of a 5 year enlistment if you are in combat arms. Of course we do to now but FFL guys get sent all over the world to places and in actions you never hear about. Anyway great job Viking...and hey dude if your heart wasn't in it and you could legally leave...you did the right thing.

      First of all Cockgrope you don't know me. Regardless of that I still gave the benefit of my personal experience...I have been around FFL troops...not a lot but certainly enough to form an impression of them. If you know ANYTHING about them and ANYTHING about US Army and Marine Corps as well as, our allies (Brits, Canadians, Aussies, Poles) you know that they are generally happier and more motivated than your average guy in the FFL.

    • @josephcosgroveF4fl
      @josephcosgroveF4fl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Playing, I know what you mean. When you have finished your day it's to a hot shower and then either to the canteen or the Quick, hotdog stand or mobile pizza parlor before going to watch the latest Hollywood blockbuster.
      The legionnaire goes and eats his rations, cleans his weapon and then, if not on guard goes to sleep. Who is happier Playing the soldier or the legionnaire? At the time it is Playing the bad ass, but back in the world, it's the legionnaire.

    • @playinem121
      @playinem121 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not going to disrespect the Legion...like I said, I have served with them and I respect them. I'm just disrespecting you. You think we are Hollywood soldiers and marines? Why don't you ask some of the Taliban or Iraqi insurgents who ran up against us? Oh...wait, you can't ask them...those cocksuckers are KIA! Performance counts...the proof is in the pudding...we don't have any Camaron's or Dien Bien Phu's in our history but we have countless EPIC successes and victories.

    • @josephcosgroveF4fl
      @josephcosgroveF4fl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Playing, you are being silly now. I can't imagine what you get out of disrespecting someone who has pointed out some basic truths. You are the one who who has improvised on the web as a psychoanalyst, giving your unwanted opinion on the morale of the legion troops.
      Do you think think that if they took away the Saturday night Bar B Q and the Sat phone home calls the the US troops would be dancing around singing Dixie. Wise up.

  • @dylanbarnard90
    @dylanbarnard90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To join the legion for my self just need some help from South Africa its kinda hard to save money earning from my work so soon ganna open up a loan or something like that question is say I make the legion now will the legion allow me to keep my phone with me so that when I get paid in the legion I can send the money back to South Africa to pay off this debt that I have finished . Or after training every month allow me to use my phone and pay the bank back when I'm on that side of the world ?
    (Second question ) I hear on this video the man said soon as you get paid they allow you to buy yourself a cellphone that can't take pics and have internet so what happens to my own personal phone when I'm there ? Do they allow me to keep it or if you don't have a phone then they allow you to buy one ? I'm really interested in the legion it's better than joining the SA Army thx guys .

  • @josephcosgroveF4fl
    @josephcosgroveF4fl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Please everyone you have to remember that the Viking did not get past the stage of basic training. I would like the Viking, if he would be so kind enough, to tell us which modern army gives you your weapon to keep with you 24/24 during basic training? Viking?
    It is also worth noting that the Viking was Fu**ed off out of the Canadian army and then asked to leave after legion basic training. He can relate to his own biased opinion about the legion, but he cannot tell you about the legion. He could not hack it and asked to go home. I heard he was crying at the end of basic because they were going to send him to a regiment. I do not know if this is true.

      @John--Silver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't know where you trained, but we had our rifles hung on the racks as we slept, and the fireguard had to count them at the beginning of every shift. We had our rifles with us 24/7. Chow, training, and sleeping. The only time we didn't have them was during PT, then they where on the racks in our platoon lines at the CTA. I was at Ft. Jackson, so it may be different elsewhere, but I know both Sill and Jackson you have them 24/7.

      Ah, the 3REI, yes of course. well i cant say too too much about them as it wasnt really something very talked about. Of course it was talked about and much of the training staff at 4RE have spent some time there. What i meant is that there are very few positions ever opened for that regiment so they didnt waste our time teaching us about a regiment none of us could request.
      That being said though, once or twice a year at random they have slots open there and it really just luck if you finish training at one of those times and can request to be sent there. However, after awhile you can request a change of regiment.

    You also talk about all the needles in castel...is that giving you regular injections or is that taking blood for testing?
    Thanks.

    • @Littlest.Viking
      @Littlest.Viking  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was sent home in the last medical in Castel. Had to do with his back, im not sure how he slipped past to begin with if it was a problem though. It was something he was aware of but it caused him no problems.
      A lot of guys were injured at some point, myself included. As for the needles, they were all injections, only took blood once from what i remember at the beginning of it all.

    • @NickolaiFury
      @NickolaiFury 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the answer. Sounds unusual, wonder why they would send him home for something that didn't even cause him problems unless they saw a scar or an X-ray picked up metal in his body, or scoliosis....but stuff should have been found in Aubagne during the medicals.
      More serious stuff like disk disease or damage would only be investigated if he had pain and couldn't continue and is only found with an MRI, something they wouldn't invest in if there were no outward signs. Sounds like maybe he accidentally said something to incriminate himself or purposely said something if he wanted a quick ticket home...though if you were near the end of Castel that seems unlikely as he could have just asked to go home like you did.
      Hope your friend is doing well regardless.
      I wonder what they were injecting you guys with. haha Science experiments of the Legion.....

    • @Littlest.Viking
      @Littlest.Viking  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was something like scoliosis, it was minor enough to get passed initial medicals, but the last doctor decided otherwise.

    • @josephcosgroveF4fl
      @josephcosgroveF4fl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Floyd C, the Viking is probably not the best person to ask question about after basic training. That was all he managed. I'm not sure what you mean about being staged in Paris, if you mean based, no.

    • @BruneSixtine
      @BruneSixtine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Currently, in January 2018, France involvment in different conflicts can lead a legionnaire to be sent in the following countries : Lebanon, Iraq, Mali, Mauritania, Chad, Niger, Côte d'Ivoire, Central African Republic. In Africa a country can have an unexpected coup d'etat or civil war and ask France for help at any time, so the list changes every year.
      France has many bases abroad where legionnaires can transit, in Africa there are Burkina Faso, Sénégal, Djibouti and a couple other countries. There are all the French territories too like La Réunion, French Guiana, Mayotte, French Polynesia, French Caribbeans, etc...

    • @garethwynnvernon6329
      @garethwynnvernon6329 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first two years is not necessarily in France. Some lucky ones will go to the 13 DBLE, some to Guyana with the 3rd, and the rest will spend the first two in any one of several French based Regiments. If you are smart, and they still do the PPCME, or advanced promotion selection at Castel, you will stay at Castel and help train new recruits, learn better French, and when ytou are done, they used to give you your choice of regiments to go to....So for those interested, don't drink too much, learn french, try not to get into too many fights and you might be one of the two, usually, who get selected to stay on at Castel for fast-track promotion to Caporal

    OK, so I know they starve the living hell out of you for the 4 to 6 months that you are doing basic training. But what is the food situation after all of that training?? Do you get to eat food normally again once you are assigned to a regiment? Do you get to eat like a normal human being after all that is said and done? That is my biggest question!

      @garethwynnvernon6329 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually dummy, they feed you well...It's in their best interests....My God, why would an elite fighting force starve recruits? There is, however, a very strategic mental test going on at all times...They don't so much need to know if you are physically capable after you have left your parents basement and travelled to Aubagne, but they do need to know if you are mentally strong enough to take countless days of corvee , marches with very heavy backpacks, and NCO's telling you to do the same thing over and over and over again, ...just because....it can be a real mind fuck, but if you have the right mindset, you will meet some fucking amazing people who will be in your life forever....and will always answer the call
